2 About Us The Cultural Centre Don Orione Artigianelli in Venice is a vast architectural complex composed by four cloisters and different numerous buildings which are different for typology and epoch of construction (15th and 18th century). Established in 1423 as a monastery of Jesuati of Saint Jerome with annexed the church of Saint Maria della Visitazione, around the first cloister, where was the main entrance directly from Fondamenta delle Zattere on Canale della Giudecca the convent and the church were purchased by the Dominican Fathers, who charged architect Giorgio Massari ( ) of the extension of the monastery. After a decree issued by Napoleon, from 1815 the building was managed as an orphanage by the Municipality of Venice. It was entrusted to Somaschi Fathers from San Jerome but their congregation retired in One year later the orphanage was purchased by the Congregation of Charity with educational purpose and in 1919 the same Congregation left Don Orione the management of the centre. He decided then to purchase in 1923 the whole property. For decades, the boarding school with its professional schools and laboratories of mechanics, carpentry and typography was concerned with the education of hundreds of young people whose skills, once they graduated, were very appreciated in the world of business, hence the name Artigianelli Institute (little craftsmen). At the beginning of the new century, the social requirements changed so that the centre was converted into a Religious House of Hospitality and a Conference Centre, recognizing the potential of this property as a favourite place for tourists by the human face, which reveals the value of meeting one another. Our main responsibility is welcome our guests, thanks to the professional skill of all our assistants; even the location tells, creates atmospheres, opens to meeting and arouses emotions. The material purpose of the work carried out at this Centre is that to financially support the charity works led by Don Orione Institutes, which in Italy and in the world help thousands people; for this reason it is our duty to thank all those people who co-operate with us, who helped us and are still helping us, and all of you who choose our House for your stay in Venice or a meeting or congress, so that with our work and your presence we can support this world of good.
