2 Why Was HEDS Originally Created? To solve massive energy waste and mold growth problems for our Military! The HEDS inventor, Scot M. Duncan, P.E., is an Energy Efficiency and Relative Humidity control Subject Matter Expert for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The High Efficiency Dehumidification System or HEDS was developed because we got sick of seeing mold growth in the living spaces of the military facilities that we were evaluating for energy efficiency upgrades. Current HVAC designs actually promote mold growth at many facilities! 2

3 HVAC-System Caused Biological Growth is a Serious Issue Throughout Many Federal Facilities Mold in AHU enclosures Mold in ductwork from high RH and condensate blow off Mold in spaces from condensation 3

4 What is HEDS? The High Efficiency Dehumidification System is a simple, energy efficient, easy to maintain method of controlling RH and biological growth HEDS can be deployed as a new chilled water AHU, or as an AHU retrofit Reduces chiller plant and boiler plant energy consumption for dehumidification 60% to over 80% while reducing or eliminating biological growth Contributes to healthier IAQ which leads to increased health, wellness and productivity Winner of the 2016 Department of Energy FEMP JUMP national energy efficiency competition and 2014 DoD ESTCP competition 4

9 HEDS Chilled Water System Temperature Differentials HEDS Eliminates Low Delta T Syndrome Cooling Coil CHW TD above 14F, even at 30% load HEDS 30% to 50% load is 14F to 21F Base case ran around 3F to 7F with Low Delta T Syndrome Eliminating Low Delta T Syndrome can increase savings by over 30% at many sites. From a CHW Flow Perspective, the system sees a 14F to 21F TD. From a CHW Load Perspective, the CHW System sees a 10F to 15F TD. The Difference is the Load and Reheat Savings. 9

10 Financial Benefits of HEDS Total energy savings relate directly to how much dehumidification is needed and required hours of operation Annual savings also vary based on application, electricity rate, gas rates Simple paybacks as low as 2 years in hot and humid climates New AHU put in place 20+ year lifetime equipment uses materials of construction to match local environment 10

11 HEDS Scheduling Benefits Many buildings with 5 or 7-day schedules that are not occupied 24x7 must be run 24x7 due to RH control issues HEDS eliminates the need to run facilities 24x7 due to larger latent coil capacities, increased usable chiller plant capacity and embedded control functions Continuous nighttime pressurization: running 100% OA at ~10% of rated airflow with very low dewpoint and higher drybulb to keep space dry and pressurized Batch dehumidification mode based on space conditions to pull down moisture 11

12 Other HEDS Benefits Built in Fault Detection and Diagnostics to support on-going operations Potential for increased ventilation rates without energy penalty Improved energy efficiency with advanced control reset strategies built in Airflow and energy monitoring to support additional IEQ and M&V credits Any HVAC mechanic can maintain it there is no added equipment over that of a normal CHW AHU. 12

13 HEDS in Retrofit Applications HEDS can typically be built into an existing air handling units or designed for replacement AHUs, DOAS s, FCU s etc. HEDS units may be larger or taller than existing equipment dimensions, depending on current configuration Key benefits from HEDS in retrofit applications: Fast return on investment from energy savings associated with cooling load reductions and elimination of reheat for dehumidification Significantly improved relative humidity control which can eliminate the potential for biological growth, improve workplace health, and save lives Can help to eliminate costs for facilities that are quarantined or condemned due to biological growth Increased chilled water plant capacity and improved chilled water system efficiency and operations from reduced cooling loads and higher delta T 13

14 HEDS in New Construction and Major Renovation Applications Easily integrates into existing HVAC air-side distribution system designs HEDS will typically fit the space allowed for new HVAC equipment Advanced specification and consideration in design are not required, but there can be many Value Engineering benefits: Reduced chilled water plant capacity (smaller chillers, cooling towers, pumps) Reduced pipe diameters from lower chilled water flows Reduced complexity and cost when compared with typical dehumidification solutions such as run around coils and dessicant-based solutions Elimination of boiler and/ or electric reheat requirements in hot and humid climates In large campus-type applications, may be able to add buildings without increasing chiller plant and distribution piping sizes 14

15 Frequently Asked Questions Where does HEDS not work? Applications where dehumidification and RH control are not needed, such as non-critical areas in arid climates Does the installation of HEDS require an entirely new AHU? No. HEDS can be retrofit to existing AHUs in many situations, depending on available space and existing unit configuration. Is there only one type/manufacturer of AHU offered with HEDS units? No. HEDS units can be designed in all AHU makes/models, in sizes from <100 to >1MM CFM. Are the HEDS unit savings calculations hypothetical, or have they been verified? HEDS savings have been validated in the field at 2 DoD ESTCP test sites in OK and NC, with third party validation in process from the DoD, USACE, DOE and ORNL How do I know if HEDS is a good fit for my applications? Conservant will work with your team to analyze the feasibility, potential costs and savings to develop a comprehensive solution 15
