The district has tested all kitchen, bathroom and classroom sinks, and has received results from the testing conducted at the high school. All drinking fountains, with the exception of one, were cleared for drinking and students and staff may continue to use these. The one affected drinking fountain has been shut off until fixtures are replaced and retesting is completed. Of the 543 sources tested, 135 were found to exceed the action level of 15 micrograms of lead per liter, typical ly referred to as "parts per billion (ppb)," as determined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). According to the EPA, lead enters drinking wate r primarily from eroding materia ls that contain lead, including faucets, fittings and pipes. All bathroom, classroom and kitchen sinks that exceeded the action level are safe for handwashing, and have been posted accordingly. The three kitchen sinks exceeding the action level are not used for cooking and are used for handwashing only. A list of the affected sources is attached and a copy of the complete report, as well as information about the new law, are available on the water testing page of the district website. School districts are required to report the results of all water testing to the State Department of Health, the State Education Department and the local health department, and to post the results - along with remediation plans, if required - on the official district website.
