4 The Garden Club meets the third Monday of the month (no meeting in December) at 1:00 pm. Membership dues are $10/year for individuals and $15/year for couples. Dues for new memberships initiated from August through November are $5. Guests (non members) may attend one free meeting per year. Volunteers have worked on garden projects on State Street in Geneseo, Geneseo Historical Museum, Southwest School, Anderson Park, Hammond Henry Hospital and Christmas Walk Windows. Any volunteers are GREATLY appreciated! We Learn by Sharing. It is exciting to look at the programs and the upcoming activities for the year ahead. Our committees hope they meet your needs and expectations. We will continue to have plant and seed exchanges and look forward to establishing different events throughout the year. Let us know of interesting people, places, tools, etc., which you encounter in your gardening. We would like to have impromptu garden visits; maybe you have a garden or a friend s garden to share with us! If anyone is interested in any new projects or just want to have more involvement in the club, let any Board member know. Your interest and suggestions are very welcome. 3

5 January 16, 2017 Flowers of Holland and Paris Club member Gene Eiklor will share slides of his recent visit to Holland and Paris including a botanical center and many gardens Refreshments: Nadine Garbett, Terri Lamberti February 20, 2017 Language of Flowers Greg, Wolf, education director or at the Quad City Botanical Center, will present a program on The Language of Flowers which will take us back in history to discover the meanings of different colors of flowers and the human emotions they are tied to. Refreshments: Joyce Dodge, Arline Sigwalt March 20, 2017 Late Summer/Fall Color in the Garden Martha Smith, Hort Educator, University of Illinois Extension, will present a program on the use and beauty of sempervivums (hens and chicks) in your gardens. Refreshments: Nancy Holling, Linda Roehrs April 17, 2017 Orchids for Everyone Marcia Whitmore, local orchid enthusiast, will present a program on basic orchid culture ~ they are not as hard to grow as everyone thinks! Refreshments: Lona Pribble, Roxie DeShane May 15, 2017 Mike Pries, local beekeeper, will present a program on his hobby of maintaining more than 200,000 bees on his honeybee farm in rural Geneseo. 6 June 19, 2017 Ikebana Club member and master gardener Sue Ruxton will present a program on Ikebana (Japanese) flower arranging using flowers from her own gardens. She will also invite members to make a design of their own during this session. Refreshments: Barb Schlotfeldt, Audrey Polson July 17, 2017 Visit Local Gardens We will visit some local Geneseo-area gardens ~ locations to be determined. Refreshments: Sharon VanDeWoestyne, Ruth Neuleib, Mary Fritch August 21, 2017 Heirloom Plants of the 1800s Using research that was done in preparation of re-creating a garden at the historic 1833 Colonel Davenport House on Arsenal Island, Faye Waterman, will discuss the characteristics of the plants, why the settlers chose them, and how they can be used today. Refreshments: Lorna Dauw September 18, 2017 Visit to Hornbaker Gardens We will take a road trip to Hornbaker Gardens in Princeton IL. Members should each bring a sack lunch, with drinks and dessert being provided by the refreshments committee. Refreshments: Mary Rawlings, Carole Francque 5
