Plant Name: Tubecentron Hsinying Girl Exhibitor: Julie Copley-Bishop : Housing: This miniature orchid with its posy of bright orange flowers is mounted on cork with some sphagnum moss around its roots. It is grown in a very tiny shade house totally covered with 70% shade cloth and at the moment, clear plastic sheeting over the roof to ward off the cold. No cooling or heating system is used. The orchid is placed as high as possible in the shade house to receive whatever warmth and light there is at this time of year. Cultural Notes: The plant is fertilized fortnightly with the rest of my collection. It is fertilized with Grow + Flower and rotated with Charley Carp. Watering: The orchid is misted daily by hand held hose using town water. Any Other Cultural Notes: and what a little charmer it has turned out to be. 2 Editorial This months Newsletter has most of the usual information and format as in past Newsletters. Check out page 7 the floral arrangement was really nice, it was on the bench at the July meeting and belonged to Marj Dawson. We will be doing a session on the Vandaceous Family at the cultural group and I have included a note about growing them on page 6 see you there for a good morning. The Bunnings sausage sizzle went well, we have earned dollars to help with the prizes at the show. The Sausage Sizzle is a few hours to help the society. There are not many shows in August the most important one being the LADOS Show at the end of this month and all members are expected to help in the running of it. With this Newsletter you will receive a copy of the Show Schedule, bring it with you to the show to help you benching your plants, Benching Tags will be available at the August meeting, see Pam for any requirements in that regard. The show will be really good and I hope you win a few prizes, it makes it all worthwhile. Things seem to be coming together nicely thanks to the hard work of our organisers. Any one interested in personally sponsoring a section $40 should contact Pam Price. GENERAL BUSINESS: SAUSAGE SIZZLE: Update Ken Martin reminded those on roster of the up-coming Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings on 7 th August. EKKA: Jan McKenzie reminded everyone of the EKKA display. Volunteers needed to man the display. Pass to the show for volunteers. OUR SHOW: 29 th and 30 th AUGUST Pam Price circulated rosters for food donations and work. Cancer Council Raffle tickets are being sold now. Please return as many butts as possible next meeting. Judging tag holders (wires) to be used at the Show. Our thanks to Merv Stewart for making the tag holders and the nifty stand to hold them,. This should make recording a little easier. FLORAL ART: Two revision sessions have been held, thanks to Helen Murray and Margaret Tierney. Marj Dawson had an arrangement on display. Well done Marj! Also a display of photos of the workshop results was benched. Pam Price briefed everyone on the bus trip to Toowoomba on the 24 th July Friday leaving at 7.30am. 4 Q Vanda VAN-dah A B C A Alliance is made up mostly of warm and full-sun-growing orchids with colourful flowers. Originating in tropical Asia, they are easily grown in warm climates, where plants are cultivated outside in light shade, such as in a lath house. In climates where winters are cold, they are often summered outside, and grown inside during the winter in a sunny window, or year round in a greenhouse. Smaller growing Vandas are best outside in tropical conditions. D E F G H is a crucial factor in blooming most Vandaceous plants. There are three types of Vandas: strap-leaved, semi-terete and terete. The first type has broader, flat leaves, while terete types have round, pencil-shaped leaves. The semi-teretes are hybrids between the two, with an intermediate leaf shape. Terete types need full sun, and are best grown in high-light climates. In a greenhouse, give the plants about 25 to 35 percent shade, less in winter if overcast. Leaves should be a medium green, not dark green. In warm, bright climates, you can grow any type A B C A outside (if warm) with partial shade for strap-leaved types and semi-teretes (especially in midday in summer) or inside (when cold) in a bright, north window. In climates where winters are overcast, try Ascocendas. Grow them outside in summer and in full sun inside during the winter. Be careful to acclimatize plants to avoid burn. I J K L J M N H O M J P for most Vandas should be warm; a minimum night temperature of 13 C is recommended. Colder spells can be tolerated for a short time if it is not windy. Optimum temperatures are 16 to 20 C at night, and a maximum of 32 C during the day. Warmer temperatures mean faster growth, which must be balanced with higher humidity, air movement, and increased water and fertilizer. Days should be warm and humid for optimum plant growth. N H J M should be applied copiously when the plants are growing, but the roots must dry quickly. Because of this, and their extensive root system, they are mostly grown in slatted-wood baskets, or in pots with a coarse potting medium. If their situation is warm and sunny, they may need daily watering. Water sparingly in the winter or during cloudy weather. R O K E S E H T of 80 percent is ideal. In tropical climates this may be easy to obtain. In a greenhouse, this is easier to provide by using an evaporative cooler. In the home, place the plants on trays of gravel partially filled with water. Air movement must be strong. U J M H E V E W J with a balanced (such as ) fertilizer applied full strength once a week during warm weather or use a one -quarter-strength solution at every watering. During cool or cloudy weather, apply fertilizer once every two to four weeks. Use a high-phosphorus fertilizer (such as ) every third application to promote flowering. X Y H H E Z F should be done in the spring. Plants in baskets do not need to be repotted often. Leave them unless the potting medium breaks down. Set the plant, with the old basket intact, into a container of water to make the aerial roots more pliable, and then set plant and basket into a larger basket. For plants in pots, repot in a slightly larger pot, positioning the plant in the centre. Use a coarse medium, whether fir bar, tree fern or charcoal, and work it around the roots. Keep shaded, humid, but drier at the roots until new root tips grow. Do not over pot. 6

5 A word about the 2015 Show from our Show Organizer Pam Price Just a few reminders about our Annual Show. When benching plants please make sure when writing tags (and pot labels) that they are legible and accurate. Plants should be free standing and up to the standard expected of sales plants i.e. clean pots, no scale, mealy bug etc. and well established. Prices to be in whole dollars only. If you are selling plants you must also work at the show. Cardboard boxes are needed for sales plants. We are expecting to see more Floral Art benched this year after a number of members took part in lessons earlier in the year. There are still a lot of spaces for helpers on all days and the work roster will be going around at the meeting on Tuesday, if unable to attend the meeting you can ring Pam on Please return your Cancer Raffle tickets and money on Tuesday night.
