1 The mission of the Society is to provide leadership and assist in the promotion and education in all areas of gardening, horticulture and environmental issues, thereby beautifying and providing enjoyment for all. Annual General Meeting Date: Monday, February 20, 2017 Time: 7:00 PM Grace Mennonite Church Location: 677 Niagara St. (between Linwell and Lakeshore) Refreshments for the February meeting will be provided by Diane Morley, Hilary Sandham, Jill Jones and Donna Van Weenen. Thanks to Myra Christensen, Rose Walsh, Marg Heinrichs and Marilyn Marsaw for the January meeting refreshments. Norah Legros Topic: Fairy Gardening Make sure to bring your children and grandchildren to this Family Day meeting. In This Issue: Highlights of January mtg. Garden Tour Report Financial Report 2017 President s Report Membership Report Society News Upcoming Events Flower Show Info. for D9 AGM Membership form Volunteer Hours form 2017 Norah Legros is eleven years old and in Grade 6 at Monsignor Clancy in Thorold. Always creative, she has been involved in gymnastics, dance (lyrical and hip hop), singing and the school s presentation last year of The Cat in a Hat. In Grade 3, she and a teacher were the co-mcs for the school s Christmas Concert. Last year she decided she could not only design, but explain how to make a Fairy Garden. She presented this at the Thorold Garden Club s meeting to an appreciative audience. This year, she has even more ideas, and hopes to show how easy it is to make these awesome displays with inexpensive miniature finds and an imagination. St. Catharines Horticultural Society is a member of District 9 of the Ontario Horticultural Association stchort@gmail.com 1

2 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE JANUARY 2017 MEETING The Movie and Popcorn night was well received. We watched 4 short clips by Alan Titchmarsh on division, pruning wisteria, pruning, staking and support, and weeding. The main feature was a Nature TV film, What Plants Talk About. Films and popcorn were excellent. Letters of thanks were received from Community Cares for the cheque of $ and the 55 pounds of food collected at the meeting. 50/50 winner was Jill Jones - $ Remember that an equal amount will go to Community Cares in November. 35 members and 4 guests attended. Garden Tour 2017 Since the garden tour is Sunday, June 11, a committee needs to be formed so work can begin. Necessary tasks to be completed are listed below. Each will require a couple of hours. Jan Harte has agreed to sit on the committee. Please consider putting your name forward. 1. Garden Liaison/Selecting Gardens: Jan Harte, Sandy Martin 2. Advertising, posters and promotional material will be looked after by the Anniversary Committee. 3. Tickets/Garden Descriptions/Layout/Distribution: Jan Harte, Cathy Edwards. 4. Sponsors and Retail Ticket Sellers: Contact sponsors and retailers used last year. All are most agreeable to do this. Contact information will be provided. 5. Thank You Notes: This requires writing a thank you note to each sponsor, retailer and garden owner. These should be done three weeks before the tour. 6. Volunteer Coordinator: Find four members to sit at each garden. Notification of the sitters should be done by the May meeting. A booklet on running a garden tour was completed by Elisabeth, Diane and Jan last year. All information will be given at a garden tour meeting. If we get lots of volunteers, then it means a much lighter work load for all. Read these over and let me know which task you wouldn t mind doing. Most can be done from home. Jan Harte Financial Report The Executive and Directors have decided that starting in January 2017 a monthly financial report should be included in the newsletter. Financial Report for January 2017 Bank balance as of January 1, 2017 $10, Total Receipts Total Disbursements 2, Bank balance as of January 31, 2017 $ 7, The Society s main expense in January was the annual rent to Grace Mennonite Church. Inclement Weather Alert! Meeting Cancellations: If a meeting is cancelled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, an will be sent by 5 p.m. or earlier on the day of the meeting. If you do not have , you will be phoned. 2

3 President s Report Hello everyone. As I write this report, I am enjoying the beautiful large blooms on my amaryllis plant. Were you one of the fortunate members to purchase an amaryllis bulb at our November meeting? Thank you Sandy Martin for making the arrangements so that our members could buy these extra large amaryllis bulbs at cost. This is an exciting year for our Horticultural Society as we will be celebrating our 160 th year. Charlie Dobbin has agreed to speak. Bill Burgoyne arena will be the site for our plant sale on Saturday, May 13. Please mark these dates on your calendar and support these special events. February s meeting will be held on Family Day. Children and grandchildren are invited to learn about Fairy Gardens. 4 Caring For Your Amaryllis Many people have been asking what to do with their bulb after it has bloomed. Sonia Day wrote the following suggestions in a Toronto Star article. 1. Cut the stalk down at the base after flowering is finished. 2. Encourage foliage growth. Water but don t over do it. Mix some fertilizer with water and add every few weeks. 3. When the weather warms up, move it outside and fertilize periodically throughout the summer. It should get some sun and rain. 4. Before the first frost in the fall, cut all foliage off right down to the bulb. 5. Bring the pot indoors and leave it in a cool, dry dark place for at least six weeks. 6. Then remove the bulb from the pot, trim the roots and repot using fresh potting soil. 7. Add a scoop of Canadian low nutrient fertilizer called Gaia Green into the mix. 8. Put the repotted bulb in a fairly cool room that is well lit but out of direct sunlight. 9. Water. Watch and wait. Sonia said she followed these instructions and her amaryllis bloomed the following winter. Good Luck. A warm welcome to our newest members Mike Butler Susan Paczuski Sue Wallace Trillium Newsletter The winter edition of the Trillium is now available on the Garden Ontario site at trillium_news_ _winter.pdf IMPORTANT NOTICE - YOUR MEMBERSHIP Memberships are due now!
