3 Society News President s Report Hello everyone, Are you enjoying the beautiful and colourful blossoms? This year, all of April's showers have brought forth many flowers. Hopefully you have been able to divide your perennials and set aside some for our Plant Sale on Saturday, May 13 at Bill Burgoyne Arena. We will be selling our Garden City Daylily at the Plant Sale. If you wish to pre order you can still do so. Orders will be accepted as long as you pay before Thursday, May 11. Call me if you wish to purchase one. All Garden City Daylilies must be picked up at the Plant Sale. As I am writing this article, a bird just flew into my window. It quickly flew away, but came back to sit on the tree branch outside the window. Upon closer examination, five more birds joined him. Intrigued by their pale yellow bellies, the bright yellow tail tips and crested heads with black eyes, I knew they were not common in this area. Reaching for my bird book I discovered they were Cedar Waxwings. It was so uplifting watching them devour the flowers on the maple buds and just like that, they were gone to places unknown up north. Isn't it great to see our gardens busy with life? Jan Harte Garden City Daylilies - Exclusive to our Society Newsletter deadline last day of the month. Garden City Daylilies will be available at the Plant Sale on May 13. The number available will depend on how many are remaining after the pre-paid orders are filled. Before our 150 th Anniversary in 2007, Jack Kent of the Potting Shed designated a new un-named daylily the Garden City. Species: Pumpkin Moonshine X Calico Jack. Height is 38 to 42. Bloom size 5 ¾. They have a high bud count and are a long, midseason bloomer. These lilies were exclusive to our society and were sold to raise funds for our 150 th Anniversary. Articles and/or photos from members are welcome. Contact newsletter editor magdansk@yahoo.ca. Society Contact Information Mailing Address P.O. 4 Society News Join us in Celebrating our 160 th Anniversary on June 10 th! Many people are unsure of what to expect at our Afternoon Tea, so we hope this will help clarify and encourage you to buy a ticket. We have invited a few dignitaries to bring greetings as it is our 160 th Anniversary. Our speaker Charlie Dobbin is an internationally known horticulturist and landscape designer. During her two-decade career, she has become well known for her professional gardening seminars and demonstrations, as well as for her prolific articles in newspapers and magazines on the subject. On HGTV, Charlie cohosted the very successful show ONE GARDEN, TWO LOOKS, and is a popular guest on a multitude of other television shows where she dispenses practical and entertaining gardening tips. In 2002, Charlie started her own design and horticultural consulting company, Garden Solutions by Charlie Dobbin. She is also the Horticultural Director for Canada Blooms, Toronto s celebrated Flower and Garden Festival. Listen to Charlie on The Garden Show AM 740 Saturday mornings at 9 am. Afternoon tea includes: Punch, tea sandwiches, savouries, sweets, scones, clotted cream & preserves, fruit garnishes, and 3 varieties of tea with milk or lemon, and sugar. The Savoy Room, our caterer, has an excellent reputation. We think you will be pleased with this selection. Fancy hats and gloves are optional, but we do ask that you dress appropriately for the occasion Volunteer of the Year - Jim Broughton Annually, the City of St. Catharines hosts a volunteer awards night and invites organizations to choose one of their members/volunteers to be recognized for their efforts. 6 Upcoming Events Plant Sale 2017 Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13 Bill Burgoyne Arena on Linwell Road Preparation Day Friday, May 12, 8:30 am 5:00 pm Plant Sale Saturday, May 13, 8:00 am 1:00 pm Members can drop off their plant contributions anytime between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. Please remember to label plants with the name, colour of the bloom, height and whether best in sun or shade. Extra plant labels will be available. It helps to give your plants a good watering the day before you bring them along to the arena. We will take plants on Saturday morning before the start of the sale, but only if they are properly labelled and ready to be put out on a table. Volunteers There will be approximately 40 tables to set up first thing on Friday morning. Most volunteers will be involved in receiving plants and checking them before they are placed out on the tables. In the afternoon, we need a good sized crew to help with pricing all the plants. Coffee, tea and bottled water will be available and a lunch will be provided if you are working through the middle of the day. (Donations of sandwiches and baked goods would be appreciated.) Once again we are asking volunteers on Friday to bring a folding chair, especially if they are working through the day or during the lunch hour. This will help with the expenses incurred when renting tables and chairs. Volunteers start at 8:00 am to finish setting up and have everyone ready for the start of the sale. We need: - four cashiers and eight counters - volunteers on the doors and others to help customers carry out their purchases - other volunteers on the floor to help the public with sales - help with taking down the tables and cleaning up at the end of the morning Please remember that the plant sale is for the public. It is one of our most important fundraisers, and needs to be successful as the money raised is used for beautification projects in the city. Consequently we have a policy of no advance sales to members of the society. Members may purchase plants at the sale along with members of the public. The volunteers on Saturday may arrange for someone to buy plants on their behalf or else they can purchase plants themselves after 11:00 am. If you have any questions, call Diana at
