4 GLOUCESTERSHIRE The Summer House is situated just outside the pretty village of Alderley on the edge of the Cotswold Escarpment with exceptional views to the west over the Berkeley Vale and to the River Severn and beyond to the Black Mountains. Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty it is Listed Grade II and is believed to have been built around 1770, probably by Matthew Hale who was the great-great-grandson of the famous Lord Chief Justice Matthew Hale, as a small banqueting room. At that time the main residence of the Hale family the upper house was situated some 250 yards below and due west. The house was demolished in 1859 and rebuilt lower down the valley. Communications in the area are superb; the M5 motorway is 6 miles and the M4, with access to London Heathrow, 10 miles. Locally it is only 5 miles from Badminton and 8 miles from the sought after Cotswold town of Tetbury. There are frequent train services to London Paddington from Kemble, Chippenham and Bristol Parkway, all with regular InterCity trains. Constructed of random coursed rubble stone with stone quoins under a slate roof, the current owners have completely refurbished the property throughout to a very high standard. From the M4, take Junction 18 and head north on the A46. Continue along the A46 for approximately 6 miles to the junction with the A433, keep left on the A46. Continue for approximately 3½ miles and take the left turn signposted to Tresham and Alderley. Pass through the village of Tresham, along the ridge and as you drop down into the valley and some woodland, the gateway to The Summer House will be seen on the left hand side.
