VOL.13 GROWING & GIVING Since 1928 Laguna Beach Garden Club Weeder s Digest Get Involved Make a difference Make New Friends Have Fun Come Join in the Fun Events This Month General Meeting Feb.9th F EBRUARY 2018 Member News Valentine Container Garden Silent Auction School Gardens presentation (see page 3) Laguna Presbyterian Church 9:30 am social 10:00 am meeting We gardeners are healthy, joyous, natural creatures. We are practical, patient, optimistic. We declare our optimism every year, every season, with every act of planting. -Carol Deppe, The Resilient Gardener A Note From the Editor Dalynn Malek Creativity is in all of us, the best part is that creativity is expressed in many forms. Some of us draw or paint, while others use color, texture and shape to design a garden that is a painting made in nature. The most important part of creativity is to provide the observer with an experience that delights, provides impact or inspires. In the coming months we have several opportunities to have those experiences, beginning with the delightful Valentine Planter Auction creations made by our members. Next, March brings the Patriot Day Parade and the impact brought by those who have served our country. Finally, May provides inspiration from the beautiful gardens of south Laguna on our Gate & Garden Tour. Creativity is abundant. Tours & Travel Feb. 23rd Hortense Miller Gardens A visit to our very own recently refurbished mid-century wonder with a historical background and a docent-guided tour. Meet at 8:45am, leaving promptly at 9:00 am at St. Catherine s on Temple Terrace (see page 8)
Show the Love & Grow the Gardens I sincerely wish a Happy Valentine s Day to my fellow Garden Club members. During this month we treasure our loved ones and take time to show we care with a special gift, note, or act of kindness. Lucky for you, we have two events to meet your need to obtain that extraordinary something for that exceptional someone in your life. These events are totally different from each other. First, the perfect answer to this dilemma is that LBGC will hold our annual Valentine Container Auction where members fashion one-of-a-kind holiday-themed containers of creative shapes and colors at our upcoming meeting Friday, February 9. It s a chance to purchase a unique gift for that special someone. Second, our first annual Valentine Plant & Planter Sale will be held Saturday, February 10 from 9am to 3pm at Laguna Presbyterian Church in Tankersley Hall and in the patio. In addition the club has its own booth, there will be 15 different outside vendors selling more than just plants and pots, such as Duchess of Pearls, John Taft wood-turned items, Gnarly Gourds, Seed Jewelry, Tentacles Arts hanging pots, Lisa Rocks for garden & markers, Quida s Botanical Accessories plant sticks, and many more. Please let your friends know. Open to the public. At both events, a fabulous raffle will increase your chances of going home with an exceptional item because the more you buy, the more you boost your opportunities. Ticket prices are 1 for $5 and 7 for $20. Please invite your friends; no need to be present to win. ALL visitors are welcome to attend. Bringing CASH or CHECKS will make checking out go quicker, although we do still accept CREDIT CARDS. All proceeds will benefit the club s educational and community conservation projects by supporting: school gardens programs (El Morro, Top of the World, and Thurston Middle School) scholarships (LBHS, Saddleback College, & Laguna College of Art and Design) I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon. ~Author Unknown
Annual Valentine Container Auction at the February 9th Meeting Bring your planted container to the auction by 9:00am on Friday We will also have a raffle: $5 for one ticket $20 for 7 tickets
January Tours & Travel A Double Take of Nurseries T &T began this month s adventure at Moon Valley Nursery in Irvine. If you are looking for trees and huge metalwork statues, this is the place to come! Next, we traveled to Huntington Beach to Village Nursery. We were ably led through the nursery by Mike Bryum. This nursery is well worth the time it takes to drive to Huntington Beach. There is a wonderful selection of drought tolerant and other plants and a helpful staff who all know their plants. After our tour, we were set loose on the nursery with 25% discount tickets clutched in our hands. I m pretty sure that every single one of us took advantage of that perk! And, we also were given 10% discounts for our return! Several of us then had lunch at a completely forgettable restaurant before heading home with our spoils. - Synthia Scofield
Club News Getting Involved Maggie Owens was the winner of the Volunteer of the Month drawing in January. She was presented a Starbucks card from Vice President Lisa Fecteau. 6 2018 Gate & Garden Tour of South Laguna: T his year s Gate & Garden Tour is slated for Friday, May 4, 11 am 4 pm, and will take place along the beautiful, tree-lined streets of South Laguna. We will visit the hidden gardens and secret sanctuaries that typify the private homes here. The tour will kick off on Mar Vista Avenue, wind through charming streets, and go down Eagle Rock Way toward the ocean. A special stop will be the South Laguna Community Garden Park, a former vacant lot converted into thriving gardens starting in This marks our first walking tour in South Laguna, said Nancy Englund, 2018 Gate & Garden Tour Chair (it s her 13 th year as chairperson!). There is much to see in this vibrant and sometimes quirky enclave from impressive collections of wild and wonderful plants along the route to spacious classical gardens. Fun is in the air as this year s garden tour fundraiser will take place on the Eve of Cinco de Mayo. Festivities will feature margaritas, Mexican food and raffle tickets for sale -- as well as free homemade cookies, Flora, Fauna and Fun! complimentary refreshments and plein air painters working in gardens. The self-guided walking tour is the club s major fundraiser with proceeds going to school gardens, scholarships and community projects. Tickets are $45 in advance; contact Nancy Englund for information: nenglund@lagunabeachgardenclub.org. Calling all Volunteers: All hands will be needed to volunteer on tour day to make the fundraiser a success. The special preevent volunteer tour will be held on Wednesday, May 2.
