4 History The name Misleham has been associated with an area on Romney Marsh dating back to before the Domesday Book was written, when Romney Marsh was given to Christ Church Priory in the 9th century. An interesting group of charters relate to this immediate area, the first of which states that Prior Wibert ( ) who oversaw the building of the Water Tower at Canterbury Cathedral, granted one of the very first tenants, Baldwin Scadeway and his heirs all the land at Misleham as they could reclaim from the sea. Later charters make mention of the land being farmed by the Men of Misleham, and over the generations the family name has been retained with the main drainage course, still being known as Baldwin s Sewer today. Description This stunning Grade II Iisted family home is understood to date in part from the late 18th century with later additions, surrounded by landscaped gardens and grounds, enjoying views over open countryside. The house has been the subject of a meticulous refurbishment programme undertaken by Cox Restoration and Oliver Bea, extending and remodelling the original period farmhouse and internally finishing it to a high standard, with living accommodation being arranged over three floors amounting to in excess of 4,500 sq ft. Adjacent to the garaging is a flexible self-contained studio/home office comprising sitting room, study area and bathroom. A gate leads through to a hardstanding stable yard where a stable block houses three loose boxes and a further gate continues through to a small paddock. There are additional fields to the rear abutting the gardens and the current owners have planted a belt of attractive deciduous trees, whilst to the furthest boundary lies the water drain known as Baldwin s Sewer. 10 Situation Misleham is situated on the edge of the small village of Brookland with its primary school, local pub, Grade I listed St Augustine s church, a prominent landmark owing to its unique detached wooden bell tower and Brookland Cricket club. The historic hilltop town of Rye is about 6.5 miles away where there is an excellent selection of antique shops, restaurants and gift shops, sport and leisure facilities including excellent golf courses, fishing and sailing. The extensive sandy beaches of Camber Sands are about 8 miles away. Rail services: Train services run from Rye to Ashford International station with connections for London and the continent. A high speed link runs from Ashford to London St Pancras in about 37 minutes. Schools: There are a number of excellent schools in the area in both the state and private sectors at primary and secondary level. These include Vinehall at Robertsbridge, Dulwich School Cranbrook, Marlborough House and Saint Ronans preparatory schools. Cranbrook School, Ashford School, Highworth Grammar School Ashford, Norton Knatchbull for Boys, Homewood School Tenterden, Sutton Valence, Benenden Girl s School and Kings College at Canterbury. Communications: A high speed train service runs from London St Pancras to Ashford with a journey time of about 38 minutes. Trains to London Charing Cross and Cannon Street can be found at Sandling station. Eurostar trains are available from Ashford International with trains to Paris in about 1 hour 52 minutes. Le Shuttle in Folkestone has frequent services to Calais in about 35 minutes. Motorway links: The M20 can be joined at Ashford with links to London, the coast and other motorway networks. The A21 at Flimwell with links to the M25 at junction 5 and Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

Directions From Tenterden take the B2080 to Appledore and turn right at the T Junction passing through the village. At the roundabout continue straight ahead and on reaching the next roundabout turn right on to the A259 towards Hastings. At the roundabout in Brookland take the 4th exit into Rectory Lane and then turn immediately right into Old House Lane. Misleham is the first house on the left hand side.
