The Speaker Will be Leon Glicenstein, who will speak on Habenarias. Leon Glicenstein Ph.D. began growing orchids in 1954, and became assistant to the curator of orchids at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, then Carl Withner, from 1957 to He has advanced degrees in Chemistry and Horticulture, with an emphasis on plant breeding, cytology, and cytogenetics. Working as a plant breeder for five years at Linda Vista S.A. in Costa Rica, he photographed, in the wild, approximately 80% of the then known orchid species of Costa Rica. He also found new species such as Telipogon glicensteinii, Macroclinium glicensteinii, Pterichis leo, Stenorrhynchos glicensteinii, and Lepanthes glicensteinii. He won the second American Orchid Society Dillon/Peterson Essay Contest using one of his Costa Rican experiences. He has photographed many of the orchids in the Northeastern United States, Florida, and all of the orchids in California, where he located some taxa not formerly known to exist there. As a respected lecturer, has given numerous conservation oriented programs both nationally and internationally, showing orchids growing in their native habitats. Leon has been an invited guest speaker at both the Vancouver and Miami World Orchid Conferences. Leon joined Hoosier Orchid Company in September As a breeder, as well as a grower, of orchids at Hoosier Orchid Company Leon specialized in working with members of the Pleruothalidae, Zygopetalinae, Gongorinae, Angraecoid, Jewel and Painted-leaf orchids, as well as other groups. He has created numerous novel and new combination not before known, thereby extended our knowledge of generic relationships within the orchid family. Since the demise of Hoosier Orchid Company Leon has been consulting with other orchid companies on growing orchids from seed. He is presently taking images of orchids in habitat in Ecuador and Peru which have led to more programs. A strong conservationist, Leon was past chairperson of the American Orchid Societies Conservation Committee, and has been a member of this committee for decades. He represented the AOS at the international conservation meeting in Costa Rica in 2007.

Sue Finger February Minutes Auction for the January meeting netted $ March program: Leon Glicenstein will be talking on Habenarias. Leon will not be selling any of these orchids as they are resting right now. Since this is the case we may have a raffle table or its possible Krum could sell orchids instead. April program. No meeting because of Rochester having their show the first weekend. Binghamptom will have their show on the 19th, 20th, and 21 at the same mall as other years. May program: Linda Wilhelm from Woodland Orchids will do a program for us in conjunction with Rochester. Several topics to consider as yet. June program: Auction and picnic. September meeting: Instead of the usual topic on getting our orchids ready for the show we might be able to get Krum to do a program instead. Cazenovia Garden Club: Sue Finger has volunteered to do an orchid program for them March of next year. Fairmount Garden Club: Wants someone to speak on orchids or show orchids on May 3rd at 6:30. Longwood Gardens currently has a special Orchid Extravaganza inside their Conservatory. Here is a brief description of the trip with a link for more information. The bus is only half full at present. The trip was organized by Pat Curran of Cooperative Extension in Ithaca. The Flower Show theme this year is Holland. In addition to the large landscapes (best viewed in late afternoon and around dinner time, when the crowds are thinner), there are many benches of specimen potted plants, an enormous vendor section, cutflower displays, miniature landscapes (sort of like the landscape a dollhouse would have), etc., etc. Longwood Gardens won t have much in bloom outside except the early hybrid witchhazels, but indoors, are several acres of conservatories, and additional acres of benches full of orchids and other tender plants in bloom. Don t miss the indoor Children s garden with its fountains and whimsical statues. My hope is that enough people will take this trip so that Swarthout Bus will think it s worth offering again next year. It s a large bus, but please don t wait until the last minute to sign up if you re interested.
