01 Floating Architecture 3
BACKGROUND Climate change sea level rising Social Change increase of population growth of claims Contradiction reduction of the land for residential settlements Contradiction higher demand for residential settlements 4
BACKGROUND Climate change and sea level rise Low-lying coastal areas are at risk of being completely submerged, disappearing under water. Construction ground is becoming increasingly limited. The maps show areas to be flooded with sea levels rising by 30 centimeters, 50 centimeters and one meter respectively, Mekong Delta, Vietnam- Photo: Courtesy of the 5Vietnam Academy for Water Resources 5
BACKGROUND Sustainable solution: not against the water but adapting to the water Source: R.Misdorp and H. van Reeken Floating buildings and structures 6
BACKGROUND Social change The shortage of the settlements due to a rapid growth of population The shortage of land resources for agricultural production and raw materials. The increased demand for high-quality residential accommodation. Source: Institute of Applied Plant Nutrition (IAPN) 7

03 Situation in Vietnam 12
GEOGRAPHY AND OUTDOOR CLIMATE The coastline is more than 3,260km long, as well as a criss-crossed river system. The coastal zones are divided into 3 regions; south, central and north. Located in a tropical monsoon climate region with significant impacts due to climate change and sea level rise. 1. Nam Dinh, Red River Delta, 2. Thua Thien Hue, central part and 3. Ba Ria Vung Tau, Mekong River Delta. (source VNICZM- Atlas, 2006) 13
FLOATING HOUSES FLOATING VILLAGE Current status of floating houses in Vietnam Long term historical tradition Using simple structures and materials Lack of planning, water and energy supply systems, sanitation system Environmental pollution Some floating villages were demolished 14
CURRENT STATUS 15
AIM FOR THE FUTURE Based on values of traditional architecture, preserve and develop a sustainable floating community with floating houses adapting to climate change and sea level rise in Vietnam Preservation Lesson on microclimate, lesson on local and friendly environmental materials, lesson about garden and plants, lesson on how to use natural resources, lesson on how to built a floating community etc. Development Planning of floating community Innovative floating structure and lightweight materials Sanitation system Renewable energies etc. 16
04 Architecture and technology of floating buildings 17
SITE PLANNING Planning In accordance with local planning. Developing a sustainable concept of floating communities - floating villages. Developing different types of compound floating housing: Line of detached floating houses Group of attached floating houses Spiral staircase of the Information, Communication and Media Centre (IKMZ) 18
BUILDING DESIGN Structure and Joining System The technology of floating structures would correspond to the owner s economic condition. Using light-weighted, flexible and assembly structure. Spiral staircase of the Information, Communication and Media Centre (IKMZ) 19
