Using fresh greens, ribbon, and pine cones, you will create a holiday treasure to keep for yourself or give to someone special. We will provide all materials, but to add your own unique touch, bring adornments from home. The Diversity of Bamboo Bamboo is one of the most sustainable plants with a wide variety of uses. Join us as we explore the history, culture, and uses of this diverse plant. 6 Additional Garden Programs Youth & Family Programs at Youth & Family Programs offer a great way for your child or grandchild to discover new things about the Missouri Botanical Garden. Each class focuses on a plant or garden theme and includes a walk in and hands-on activities. Registration and payment must be done in advance of classes. Questions? Call (314) Discover some of the amazing things that plants provide for us with your child or grandchild. Each class includes indoor, hands-on activities, a walk in, a story and a snack. Enjoy special time with your child or grandchild as she or he learns about the natural world. Each session includes indoor, hands-on activities, a walk in, a story and a snack. Over the river, past the wetland, through the woods, and into the prairie this seven-week series will focus on native Missouri plants and habitats. Each class will include investigation in, a hands-on project, and a healthy snack. This class is designed for children only. The Oaks and Acorns Program is especially for seniors who want to spend special time with their favorite young person. Participants will learn about plants and their fun uses. They will also complete a take-home project together. Be a Flower Pounder Plastic or paper? Neither! Create a one-of-a-kind cloth bag by pounding in the pigment of fresh flowers. We ll have a hammering good time! Decorate your own groovy gourd with natural materials and learn about other fun gourd crafts. 7 Registration Procedures for Individuals must register in advance to ensure placement on class roster. A confirmation for the classes you are enrolled in will be mailed to you. PARTICIPANTS HAVE TWO OPTIONS FOR REGISTRATION. OPTION 1: When registering for classes, send a separate check for each class. For example, if you register for 3 classes at $7 per class, three separate checks for $7 must be included. Your checks will be held 10 days prior to the date of the classes. If you need to cancel before this time, call Carol at (314) She will send your check for the class being cancelled back to you. There will be no cancellations accepted after the 10 day limit. If the class is full, you will be called to see if you want to be put on a waiting list or if you want your money returned. If a class is cancelled due to inclement weather or low enrollment, you will receive a full refund. OPTION 2: When registering for classes, send one check for all the classes. For example, if you register for 3 classes at $7 per class, one check for $21 must be included. If you cancel for one of the classes 10 days prior to the date of the class, you will be given a credit for another class to be used for any future classes. No credit will be issued after the 10 day limit. If a class is full, you will be called to see if you want to be put on a waiting list or if you want credit for another class. No partial fees will be returned if you choose this option. If a class is cancelled due to inclement weather or low enrollment, you will be given credit for another class. Register with a Friend! In order to provide a better chance of getting into a class with a friend, please mail your registration forms in the same envelope. We will do the best we can to accommodate these requests. Therapeutic Horticulture Programs are designed to provide creative and stimulating activities to further enhance the physical, mental and social lives of the participants. The mission is to enrich the lives of senior citizens and special needs populations, particularly those with limited resources and limited abilities, by sharing knowledge about and interacting with the diversity of life in our natural world. Horticultural therapy (HT) is a process in which plants and gardening activities are used to improve the body, mind and spirit. HT is effective and beneficial for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Bring your group to enjoy the wonders of the Missouri Botanical Garden. Enhance your visit by scheduling a privately conducted educational and therapeutic program! (See Facilities Key on page 16) PROGRAMS FEES Individuals Programs $7 or $11 per person depending on selection* Garden Slide Presentations $3.50 per person * How to Gardening Presentations $3.50 per person* Hands-on Presentations $5 per person* *Includes presentation, light refreshments, room rental, and garden admission. 11 How to Gardening Presentations For groups interested in learning more about accessible gardening ideas, design, and technique we offer an exciting list of presentations designed for the amateur gardener. All class participants will receive informational handouts with each program. FEE: $20 PARTICIPANTS: depending upon the ability level of the participants. Butterfly Gardening Butterflies have intrigued people for centuries. During this beautiful slide presentation we will learn about the life cycle of the butterfly as well as how to attract and keep them in our gardens! Learn about their needs and the different plants that will bring these beauties to your yard! SCN, AL, IL, SC SENSORY KIT Small Space Gardening In a small garden, everything counts! With selective planning, one can create their own bit of paradise. We will discuss plants that have multiple seasonal benefits, such as summer blooms, fall color, and winter interest. IL, SC Low-Maintenance Gardening No garden is no maintenance, but your garden should not always be a dreaded chore! It needs to be a source of pleasure and delight. In this presentation, we will discuss soil, water, mulch, and the best plants to choose for a low maintenance garden. IL, SC Hands-on Presentations These hands-on programs have been developed for participants with a variety of ability levels. Each minute program is taught by a Missouri Botanical Garden staff or trained volunteer that introduces the group to the topic and is followed by a hands-on activity for all participants. FEE: $50 LIMIT: participants per program The Wonderful World of Bulbs On a dreary winter afternoon, nothing is more cheerful than the beautiful blooms of daffodils, iris, hyacinths and other bulbs. Learn about the fabulous variety and history of some of the most beautiful bulbs. Participants will pot a bulb appropriate for the season. Participants will enjoy a slide tour of our fabulous Chinese Garden and a hands-on activity, including potting individual jade plants with a Chinese stone decoration. They re all made with cotton. Learn about this wonderful plant from field to finished products. We will make a pretty brooch from cotton flannel fabric. 12 Container Gardening This program can be designed to fit your needs! Hanging baskets and container vegetables or herbs are just a few possibilities. Our MBG volunteers share tips and techniques for container plant care. Fee includes a talk, demonstration, and one planted container for your center OR a small hands-on planting activity for each participant (depending on availability). Bring your sick plants for personal advice! AL, IL, SC Color of Nature Much of the color in nature comes from flowers. Learn about the effects of color and how flowering plants use color. Participants make a decorative corsage or boutonniere from silk flowers to be kept or given as a gift. Fresh flowers are available upon request. SCN, AL, IL The Zen Experience Enjoy the splendor of the Missouri Botanical Garden s Japanese Garden. The philosophy and design of this garden are beautifully illustrated and interpreted.
