1 April Officer and Committee News WACGC PRESIDENT Terry Sisto, Ford s Colony Garden Club tes125@cox.net, First, I must say how wonderful the 33 rd Arbor Day Ceremony was. A huge thank you to everyone involved. Betsy Edwards and Patti Sager, Arbor Day Co-Chairs, along with the committee made the event a memorable one. I appreciate the time they all gave to make this day a success. The day began with the tree dedication at the James City County Police Department on Opportunity Way and we were blessed with a chilly but sunny morning, yeah! My thanks to Ruth Maruca and Loy Holt, Continuing Projects Co-Chairs, and Scott Whyte, James City County Senior Landscape Planner, in the selection and planting of this year s tree, a beautiful Yoshino Cherry. It was full of buds and should be blooming soon. Next, I thank all who attended the ceremony and reception at Legacy Hall. I also thank our host, James City County. Robert Hunt s floral arrangements were spectacular again this year. I d like to say Congratulations! to our winners Kingsmill Garden Club, Arbor Day Garden Club Member Award winner and Susan Voigt, Arbor Day Individual Award winner. Also, congratulations to all the Award of Excellence winners. A list of this year s Award of Excellence winners is in this newsletter. It was truly inspiring to honor this year s recipients. Be sure to check out our website for photos of our Arbor Day event and festivities. Now is the time to start looking for next year s Arbor Day Awards nominations; York County is our host. The Spring Tidewater District meeting was bursting with signs of the season, mostly due to the table centerpieces. My thanks to our clubs for supporting the Council in donating the centerpieces. They were all beautiful and, I know, enjoyed by ten lucky winners for many more days Thank you! As a reminder Thursday, May 24 th is our next Council General meeting. It will be at Williamsburg Sentara Hospital hosted by Brandon Woods Garden Club. Make sure it s on your calendar! Happy Spring!! WACGC VICE PRESIDENT Rose Marie Crocco, Colonial Heritage Garden Club swamprmc@cox.net Mark your calendars! The May 24 general meeting of the WACGC will be hosted by Brandon Woods at Sentara Williamsburg Hospital. The Council has donated money and time over the years to both the Pansy Project and the monthly floral arrangements for the lobby of the Hospice House. We are proud to announce that Gary Streb will be our featured speaker. He is not only a Master Gardener but also the lead gardener for the Hospice House grounds. He oversees and maintains 11 acres working several days a week. He will share his experiences and the challenges of the Hospice House project. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn what he has learned over the years in the garden. Page 1 of 13

WACGC Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Beverley Smith, Toano Garden Club "Plastics in cigarette filters might be number one on the litter hit list but plastic pollution from other products are having a huge impact on our environment too. We use 500 million plastic straws per day in the US. In one year we consume water, just water, from 500 million plastic bottles and we go through 100 billion plastic bags. It is incredible the amount of plastic we use which is now part of everyday life and more than 8 million tons of it is ending up in our oceans every year."
