I guess that s why we say time flies. I must say thank you and congratulations to Green Spring Garden Club for an inspiring 58 th Annual Christmas Homes Tour. And thank you to all who shared their time and talents to make the tour a success. I know it was greatly appreciated by all the attendees. I hope to see you at the Council s General meeting, Thursday, January 25 th at the James City County Parks & Recreation Center. The meeting will be hosted by Berkeley Garden Club and Floral Designer, Ray Dugan, will be our guest speaker. Way & Means will have raffles don t forget to bring some cash. Check the newsletter for all the details. The Arbor Day committee meets this month to vote for this year s winners. I hope all representatives are planning to attend. If you cannot, please contact Betsy Edwards or Patti Sager. The Board will meet January 12 th, Towne Bank, Monticello Ave, 2 nd floor conference room 9:30am coffee/10am meeting. Ray Dugan, floral designer at Harris Teeter in Lightfoot will be our guest. His program will feature several of his favorite designs, and he will give us tips and suggestions for our own successful designs. A drawing will be held to give away his floral pieces. Let s welcome him to our winter meeting, Thursday, January 25, at the Parks and Recreation Facility on Longhill Road. WACGC Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Beverley Smith, Toano Garden Club bbstls4@outlook.com, I could not find an article I really thought would be of interest for this month, but I will share with you an article which might be usable in the "reuse" category. "How to make stiff and scratchy towels soft again." Page 2 of 12

3 Run towels through a hot water wash minus detergent. Add ½ cup of white vinegar to the Wash and Rinse cycles; if your machine has dispensers, pour the vinegar into the detergent and softener sections. Repeat several times until towels get softer. (Keep in mind they'll likely never feel brand-new.) Good Housekeeping, January 2018 VFGC Tidewater District News VFGC TIDEWATER DISTRICT PRESIDENT Glenda Knowles, Berkeley and Colonial Heritage Garden Clubs ggknowles@cox.net, Tidewater District will be featuring a standard flower show at the Virginia Beach Convention Center under the umbrella of the Virginia Flower & Garden Expo, January 26-28, The Convention Center will be hosting the big show, featuring landscape displays, vendors, and special presentations. The District has been invited to feature their show Magical Mirage as part of the Expo. Tickets are $10 for one day at the Expo. You may purchase these at the Convention Center. (There is no charge to enter Magical Mirage and if you volunteer (hostess) you may enter the Expo at no charge.) If you are available to hostess for a few hours at the flower show, please contact Geneva Hunt, genevahunt@cox.net or Designers are still needed to enter the Design Division. Pre-registration is required to enter a design. Of course, Horticulture is a separate division with no pre-registration. 4 Around Town 85 th HISTORIC GARDEN WEEK IN VIRGINIA WILLIAMSBURG TOUR Linda Wenger, Williamsburg Garden Club, Historic Garden Week Publicity Chair Tickets are on sale now for the 2018 Historic Garden Week Tour in Williamsburg. The event is set for Tuesday, April 24, 2018 from 10:00am - 5:00pm. Online advance tickets are available now for $40 per person at Box lunches will be served at Two Rivers Country Club from 11:30am-1:30pm with a prepaid $17 lunch reservation. Additional advance tour ticket information, general information questions, and lunch reservations may be directed to Cathy Adams, cbtbka@cox.net, The tour will feature colonial to transitional homes, gardens, landscapes, James River and Chickahominy River views. The waterfront golf community of Governors Land will feature four private homes opened for the first time. Complimentary shuttles will be available from designated parking lots. Visit the Lightfoot House c and the Tayloe House c in Colonial Williamsburg, as well as the award-winning children s garden at Matthew Whaley Elementary School. Free parking is available at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitors Center. Colonial Williamsburg buses will provide transportation for Historic Garden Week tour guests from the Visitors Center to and from the Historic Area. The Williamsburg Garden Club will host the event as part of the 85th Historic Garden Week in Virginia. Tour proceeds fund the restoration and preservation of more than 40 of Virginia s historic public gardens and landscapes, a research fellowship program, and a Garden Club of Virginia Centennial project with Virginia State Parks. THE COLONIAL TRIANGLE OF VIRGINIA UNIT, THE HERB SOCIETY OF AMERICA Donna Pratt, Publicity wareriver@gmail.com, The Colonial Triangle of Virginia Unit (CTVU) of the Herb Society of America will hold an open meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 9, in Williamsburg. The program for the meeting, Saving Myself to Save Others, will feature Keisha Harris, a stage 4 cervical cancer survivor from Richmond. Ms. Harris will discuss the healing benefits of using herbs, foods, extracts and minerals to mitigate illness and disease. This will be the first open meeting the CTVU will hold during Open meetings provide non-members a chance to learn about the Herb Society s mission, programs, and local volunteer opportunities. The meeting will be held at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 4897 Longhill Road, Williamsburg, beginning at 1pm in the fellowship hall and is free of charge. Major Lecture Series presents Foodscape Revolution Perennial Combinations, featuring Brie Arthur, on Tuesday, January 16, 10:00a, at the Williamsburg Library. Foodscape design requires a well-balanced mix of flowering and edibles plants. Brie shares her favorite perennials for the seasonal foodscape. Learn how to layer perennials in with your favorite vegetables to increase beauty and pollinator activity. She shares management strategies to make your edible perennial border low maintenance and full of life. This lecture is free and open to the public. Originally from southeastern Michigan, Brie Arthur studied Landscape Design and Horticulture at Purdue University. She was a professional plant propagator at Plant Delights Nursery and Camellia Forest Nursery before transitioning her focus to Green Industry communications through writing, public speaking, film production and consulting. As a professional garden industry communicator Brie is leading the national suburban Foodscape movement; a model of community development that incorporates sustainable, local food production. She writes for Meister and GIE Media about green industry trends and strategies to expand market demographics. She speaks internationally on a variety of horticulture topics ranging from foodscape design to technical propagation methods and marketing. As a correspondent on the PBS television show Growing A Greener World, Brie shares practical advice from her one acre suburban foodscape encouraging everyone to embrace the hobby and lifestyle of home gardening brings new ventures, including her first book, The Foodscape Revolution published by St Lynn s Press. Brie serves as GWA (Garden Writers of America) National Director of Region IV representing garden communicators across the southeast US. As founder of Emergent: A Group for Growing Professionals, Brie encourages an open dialogue and networking opportunities between seasoned professionals and rising green industry members. She sits on the Executive Committee for the International Plant Propagators Southern Region and is Marketing Chair for the IPPS International Board. WILLIAMSBURG BOTANICAL GARDEN LEARN AND GROW EDUCATIONAL SERIES Joanne Sheffield, Programs Chair josheffie@yahoo.com, January 20: PRUNING WINTER TREE CARE. Freedom Park Interpretive Center, 10:00 a.m., open to the public. This workshop will provide instruction on early winter tree care. James City County/Williamsburg Master Gardeners will demonstrate the proper use of pruning tools and will discuss the basics of pruning trees and shrubs. Weather permitting, after the program there will be an outdoor demonstration in the Garden. This event is part of the Learn and Grow Educational Series sponsored by the Williamsburg Botanical Garden.
