3 Historical Information The first Outdoor Warning Sirens were placed in Dallas following the 1957 tornado that killed 10 people, injured 200, and caused $2.5 million in damage 2

4 Historical Information There are currently 155 sirens citywide Dallas has the largest siren system for any single jurisdiction in the country Sirens are one of the primary means of Emergency Public Information for the Residents and Guests of the City of Dallas. November 7, 2006 Bond Election held to vote on twelve (12) capital improvement propositions, totaling $1.35 billion dollars. This package included a new outdoor warning siren system. 3

5 2001SRNB Siren A rotating directional, electromechanical siren that covers more than 3.5 square miles Produces three high powered signals AC, DC or AC/DC operation available Supplies minimum of 15 minutes full power output from batteries after AC power loss Produces a 360 degree projection of sound which rotates at 3RPM 4

Office of Emergency Management oversees the program and activates the sirens Current siren preventative maintenance is on a triennia schedule (Average of 52 per year) Federal Signal 2001SRNB Sirens have a 30 year reliable life expectancy Current cost for a new siren $25,000 - $33,000 each (Depending on options) 5

8 April 2016 Sound Study OEM commissioned a sound study to DH Marketing for evaluation of current siren coverage This study was performed by Carroll Hollingsworth and his team Experience Methodology 7

9 Completing a Sound Study A sound study is conducted to determine estimated coverage of a proposed warning system or a warning system already installed and operational. Each siren site is visited to document information in regards to the local surroundings. The information gathered is utilized to determine how sound produced by the warning system could be affected by local conditions. 8

10 Documented Information Ambient noise: runways, heavy traffic, construction, etc. Notable sound barriers and sound channels Foliage: Density? Evergreen? Over 40 feet tall? Buildings: # of stories, height, type (housing, office, etc.) Terrain: Flat vs. hilly, grassy, shrubs, leafy trees, rocky, water, pavement, etc. Population density Prevailing winds and weather 9

11 Estimated Coverage Map Once all data is received, the information is entered into the sound study form. The sound study forms are used to transfer data into the GIS-based mapping software. The mapping software runs over One-Million calculations, including topography, average regional conditions and existing site conditions. Final calculations produce a more realistic view of what the warning system should produce. 10
