Young President, Texas A&M University CBE Recommendation: 41 Trees- Bush Library The Council for the Built Environment (CBE) received a request from the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum to plant a total of 41 trees to honor President Bush. The request and the Design Review sub-council's report are attached. Design Review sub-council members unanimously voted to recommend approval of the Planting of 41 Trees project, with the following caveats: Planting of the live oak tree (Phase I) is approved for the Option 2 location as requested. Reevaluation of the location of the forty trees is requested to study the site in a more comprehensive way that acknowledges existing plantings and sightline of view to quote wall. Revised locations should be submitted to the DRsc Chair for approval. The CBE voted to recommend, with noted caveats, the President' s approval of the request to plant 41 trees at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. ~ (o-z.1-!') 10 COUNCIL FOR THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT DESIGN REVIEW SUB-COUNCIL MEMORANDUM TO: Dr. Jerry Strawser Co-Chair, Council for the Built Environment Dr. Karan Watson Co-Chair, Council for the Built Environment FROM: Ms. Lilia Gonzales, AIA University Architect and Chair, Design Review Sub-Council DATE: October 21, 2015 RE: Design Review Sub-Council (DRsc) Report Planting of 41 Trees at George Bush Presidential Library On October 14, 2015 the Design Review sub-council (DRsc) reviewed a request from the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation and the Texas A&M Forest Service for the planting of 41 trees in honor of President George Bush, 41 st President of the United States. The trees would be planted in two phases. Phase One will plant one 2-5 inch caliper live oak tree near the circle drive adjacent to the facility. The area on the attached site plan marked as Option 2 is the preferred location. This tree would be planted prior to a ceremony on Arbor Day, November 6, Phase Two would plant the remaining forty trees along the north and south sides of Barbara Bush Drive, from the entrance at George Bush Drive to the bridge. They would be planted approximately 20 feet from the edge of Barbara Bush Drive and feet apart, lining the roadway. Placement of the trees should not obstruct the view of the pond and the quote wall. The trees would be 5-15 gallon in size and would be a mixture of species: Mexican white oak, bur oak, pecan Montezuma bald cypress, and Mexican sycamore. They will be planted as single-species clusters to encourage growth and germination. The trees will be donated by Apache Corp and planted by the Texas Forest Service no later than mid-february The trees will require irrigation during the first three years. DRsc members had concerns with the proposed location of the 40 trees along Barbara Bush Drive near the entry at George Bush Drive. Concerns stemmed from the ability to maintain a clear view of the pond and quote wall, as well as being able to identify the significance of the planting of the 41 trees. One suggestion was to locate the trees after the bridge closer to the facility as it would create a sense of order and arrival when approaching the facility. Another suggestion was that the trees could remain at the front portion of the drive but be clustered in a more informal arrangement and be easily identified as the newly planted 40 trees. As current irrigation does not extend along Barbara Bush Drive, nor is it the intent to install new irrigation, the trees will need to be manually watered for approximately three years until established. Per the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation, SSC will provide this maintenance and service. 1
