1 UK Homes Curriculum Links Science: (Y1) Distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made; Identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, and rock; Describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials; Compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties. (Y2) Identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials. DT: () Investigate and analyse a range of existing products Geography: () Use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their surrounding environment. Lesson Objectives Children will know and name some types and features of typical UK houses and the reasons for some of the materials used. Key Vocabulary Materials (e.g. wood, metal, brick, plastic, glass, rubber); Features (e.g. door, window, room, roof, garage, garden); Properties (e.g. transparent, translucent, opaque, rigid, flexible, reflective, dull, etc) Resources Houses Prompt Sheets (a-e) Risk Assessments Generic Site RA; You may also want to do an additional RA for the route of your walk. Learning Outcomes LA - Children will be able to name some types and features of houses. MA - Children will be able to name some types and features of houses and some materials the parts are made from. HA - Children will be able to name some types and features of houses and some materials the parts are made from, giving reasons. Session Outline Discuss why we need a home? (As shelter to protect us from the wind, rain etc) Discuss what a home needs. Which rooms are essential and which are non-essential? What is the typical layout of a house? (Ground floor/ second floor) Can they name the different parts and rooms of their own houses? What different types of houses are there? (Use the Houses Sheets a-e as a prompt - scroll down.) Walk in the local environment looking at some typical UK houses. Do the houses all look the same on each road? Do they have the same features? What are the differences? Can they name some of the features? (Door, windows, roof, walls, garage, driveway, garden.) Does the layout look typical? Can they name the type of houses? (detached/ semi-detached/ bungalow/ flat) What are the features made from? Can they name some of common materials used? (Wood, stone, fabric, metal, glass, plastic.) What are the properties of these materials which make them suitable for this use? Would another material be suitable too? Why/ why not? Differentiation: HA- Can they suggest why particular materials are used for different parts of the house depending on their properties? LA- Help with identifying and naming materials. Extension: Can they spot a house with (insert objective here such as material/ number/ shape/ colour/ type/ size etc)
