ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO Patrick Caspers Hogeschool Rotterdam Bachelor of Architecture +31 (0) De la Gardestraat AT Zoetermeer The Netherlands SELECTED WORKS
Introduction This portfolio gives a view on two years of architectural education on the college of university in Rotterdam. It also reflects my interests in architecture and some specific design principals I have created. During projects I recodnized various design principals, caused by the different educational contexts. I learned to design in various ways which gave me an extended knowledge about designing. Designs that are created by analysing the question and neccesity is what I like most. The result by this starting point is a design with an optimized program layout and a building that is suitable to realize this program. Technology will be used to realize future-flexibility. But however it s not the main-aim. What I like mostly of architecture is the power it has to involve social and society problems. Building is a timeless aspect. Therefore, buildings that already have been made, should participate till the end in it s full glory. To provide this, renovation is an important aspect. I believe that renovation and new buildings can go hand-in-hand. As long as the programming is clear and optimized, new and old will always cooporate, even in one building. Introduction 1 Curriculum Vitae 2 Architecture projects 5-26 Centric Nature 5-8 The Art Ship Moda Vista Flores Kitchen Brinkmann s city of knowledge These two target areas in my architecture will be shown in various projects in this portfolio. 1

Centric Nature Architecture projects The Art Ship In this section I show three projects I made during my four years of Bachelor education. They offer an overlook of the wide range of planning aspects I faced and of the variety of the topics I dealt with. Moda Vista All drawings, schemes and models shown have been made by myself unless otherwise stated. Group or individual projects are specified in the related descriptions. Flores Kitchen Brinkmann s city of knowledge 3
1 Centric nature z In the woods of Rijsbergen, Holland, a educational manager requested a villa for him and his wife. The environment is genuine and had to be kept safe. Efficiency in the floorplan is key as well as the centric enclosure of hallways to provide maximum daylight income. In the center is a phenomenal piece of art to gather the light. The woman of the couple is an artist and is fascinated by modern art. The main materials are glass and plastics, all based on a steel beam-colum structure to create a modern form and detail level.
Centric Nature Programs used Job profiling course (known as BPC) Mentor: Remko Remijnse Semester 3, year 3, 2015 For me as the designer, it was nice to have such a clear demanding client. He had a complete program of requirements. I started with various program sketches with relations between to make the first concept of the DNA of the building. After creating the concept, I made principal drawings for the details and materialisation, which was reflected parallel in various models. 5
Program c oncept The site analysis made clear various starting points. There were requirements for privacy and the opposite, attraction to the building. The woman is an artist and wants to expose her artwork to people on the road nearby. A direct relation with the garden and it s context was important Various sketch studies of space relations led eventually to a floorplan concept. The program will elaborate from here. The basic layout of the requested areas and it s parameters evolved to a floorplan with basically two circles merged together. One is presenting the living area and the other the work area. Where this circles meet their is a hallway located to provide entrances to the various rooms. This is the start of Centric Nature. 6
Elaboration Floorplan A Atelier T.R. Toilet Interspace Leisure room Hall Hallway Logies-/bedroom Bathroom Storage Kitchen Bedroom Dining room Hall Walk-in closet Bathroom Living room Master bedroom A 7
Routing One of the design considerations was how to enter the building with the two functions; working and living in mind. The visitors of the atelier can enter the atelier seperated from the main routing of the house. All the remaining rooms are part of the housing program. Combining rooms let to great flexibility and accesibility. The kitchen, dining room and living room are one open space together. The varanda, oriented on the backyard, is directly accesible from the living room as well as the master bedroom. The same interrelation has been created between the logies-/bedroom and the bedroom by the bathroom. The main-goal of the floorplan was to make every room very accesible and to create an open layout of the plan by creating various fysical relations. Principal details The boundries, within it s acrylic sheet material, will be mounted to the steel structure with angular profiles. It engages around the isolated sandwich roofelements. Transparant acrylic material Air filled cavities between sheets of acrylic Rhombic pattern (luminating at dark) Because of it s location in the forest I chose, to keep one level. In this way the contact with nature is maximum because of the lack of stairs. With the efficient routing you are outdoor in no-time. To compensate the distances for light travel, the light scoop has been applied. In this area there comes light from above and will be situated in a little garden in the heart of the building. 8
2 The Art Ship Today s art is far away from the idea of how youth do see modern art. To increase the participation of youth in modern art, I designed a cultural center that is led by art students and starting artists. To involve youth, they have to participate and interact with the current art tendences. This will mainly be done by coaching of the starting artists and students, or mentors by the production of art by the youth in the cultural center. It s an open workshop with all the necessities to produce art. The rising building is an experience through art by youth of being in their own world. When the building will drop, the atrium inside the building will function as a podium where the youth can present their works. When the building is down, the open-air skatepark will be an underground one with walkthrough for pedestrians along skaters and performing new generation artists.

The Art Ship Programs used Project 1 - Architecture Minor Mentor: Remko Remijnse Semester 1, year 4, 2016 To create a cultural center, driven by young artists and students, it was key to figure out how the activities are planned to function. The site opportunities were a design tool for this program study. Site qualities and program plans have let to an suitable mass model. This model with it s program has evolved and has been tuned with the introduction of an jack-up system. This way, the program became flexible and improved the strenght of the concept. Which is to let the youth participate and influence modern art in an active way. 11
Site analysis STRENGHTS - Enough space for the necessary public vegetation zones - Excellent location for the culture gardens - Surrounding buildings all very recent built - Perfect accessibility to the pier but however a decent walk to the site -Residents divers in nature 100m WEAKNESSES - Abandoned feeling despite of the perfect accessibility - Only buildings with domestic nature - Architectural simple and boring related to the sameness of material and color. Massive and dark feeling when surrounded by the buildings as well - Youth seem the be not attracted to this area CHANCES - Integrate building in environment by using it instead of just occupying. Mind for the colleges nearby - Design freedom in optimizing the walking routing of youth on the pier to get interest in the located building The Concept Deciding to take a fresh look at Teen Programs Mission, not marketing, should drive your decision to catalyze participation and adopt new ways of working with teens. The Art Ship in Rotterdam incorporates engagement in a variety of programs for young people, guided by a specific mission of connecting teens to contemporary art and artists. - Create programs that are teen centered, not adult directed - Offer empowering arts experiences that meet teens needs - Involve youth voices in the organization as participants, advisers, and advocates - Contribute high-quality arts education options to the community s out-of-school- time offerings for teens Program and relation diagram led to spatial plan according to site quality. 12
Mass studies The site studies contained various mass studies according to sun and routing. These studies concluded that a u-shape building elevated from the ground would be ideal. The program study, led to a conceptual floorplan. These two studies are combined to a conceptual mass that evolved after optimalisation. 13
Level 2 Level 3,4,5 Level 6 14
3 Moda Vista
These days shopping is sort of a private thing. When we are buying fashion it s basically store in and out. Shopping together can be fun right? This concept expands this idea and creates a daily based community of en passant people, students and professionals. In Moda Vista you can enjoy fashion in a new way. It s runned by fashion students. All knowledge of fashion these days will be shared within the community. Students and professionals will learn you everything about fashion and will give workshops and fashionshows. You can also visit boutiques with open-ateliers.
Moda Vista Programs used Project 2 - Architecture Minor Mentor: Bert Alkemade Semester 2, year 4, 2016 At the first place in this project, was the neccessity to transform the World War II reconstruction buildings to a function that matches today s tendenses. To accomplish this, the building certainly has to change in physical regard. The context of the Westewagenstraat and the Rotte is very important for the participation of the buildings in the urban planning. Today the relation with building and urban plan leaves much to be desired. With this project, urban planning with it s mass studies in context were central. When the spatial concept was made, along with the program concept, the eleboration of architecture started. 17
Site analysis The site can roughly be seperated in 4 areas. When objects are claiming space, they creat a subarea with objects that are in the sight-lines of the reference point. Part of the street that seperates the lineair street and road section Public area complicated and remote caused by the groundfloor buildings Open area with historical context. Center of cityscapes Area A is the result of space-claiming objects. To restore it s relation with the other areas, the open space between A and C should function as a center of gravity where the city scapes meet each other. The space coherency is related to the accesibility of the area. The relation study shows the importance of area C, dominated by the Laurenskerk. It will be used as the gathering spot of the city scapes. Mass studies All masses are tested to the bounderies of spatial integration The influence on the range is minimal. Indeed it s participating the range due to it lineair shape. It comes out on the front facade to force the attention perpendicular to the range to create more balance in the model. 18
Program 1 Storage/toilets 2 Ateliers/boutiques 3 Workshops 4 Elevations/catwalk Housing for students or elderly 1 35 m m2 Housing for small families 3 70 m m2 19
The design The main bearing structure will be saved. It forms the contours of the buildings. The floors will be locally be removed to create the atrium for the ramps. The glass structures on the inside of each building will be mounted to the main structure as well as the workshop area. The colums have an important participation in the remaining of the cityscape by the buildings. There won t be any form-merging between old an new because of the out-centered position of the glass structures with the ramps. The boutiques are situated on the first two floors. They are combined with open ateliers. Students are designing, making and selling the items for a decent price. The workshop area comes after the ateliers. It s a separeted building with seminars of (ex)professionals in the fashion industry. Also retired elderly will give special lectures and demonstrations. There are daily conferences on the roof with an explanation of the displayed fashion. It s also a VIP place where you can meet the designers(s). 20
4 Flores Kitchen
In the south of Indonesia, some beautiful islands are located. One of them is Flores. It s nature is rich. It has many resources that are fundamental for various Indonesian dishes. Most people know the Indonesian kitchen by dishes from Bali, Java and Jakarta. However, the food culture of the less populair area s is worth to experience. One example is the island Flores. It s kitchen is mostly known for it s fish specialties. The amount of local resources is something like paradise for every culinair lover.
Flores Kitchen Programs used Project 3 - Architecture Minor Mentor: Gerard Ugen Semester 3, year 4, 2017 The task was to design an Eco Resort on the Indonesian island Flores. The case could be interpretend on many ways. After extensive site and social-cultural analysis, a concept arose. The theme has been programmed completely. With the program settled, the architectural design elaborated. The program in this project was so important that the architecture followed in certain ways. However it was neccessary to not lock the architecture to the program. A flexible concept with ease to expand in future is the result. 23
Interpretation case The most important quality of the site is it s variety and richness in resources. It s a completely isolated island. But locals are settled and supply their own living with minimal imported resources. Most farming and fishing is taking place traditionally. It is very interesting to recreate the nature qualities combined with it s culture and usage. Concept Culinair center that let you experience the kitchen of Flores in a challenging way. Local will guide you with all the steps of preparing the iconic Flores fish dishes. The steps contain fishing, agraric activities, farming, cooking and of course eating. You can choose to do everything yourself or fully supervised and guided by employed. locals. Target audience Tourists that like adventure, cooking, farming and fishing. Main Threat How can tourists get a self-supllying experience with minimal modern resources, in a more challenging way? Main Aim To recreate tourists by experiencing the traditional eating culture of Flores in a self-supplying way. Why Flores is ideal The vulcanic soil is excellent for agraric purposes. It s rich in nutrition and it s vegetation will attract lots of fauna. Besides that, the eating culture of Flores is extensive yet unknown. It s great to experience the unknown! Resources on site: sepat, mackerel, pomfret, rabbitfish, garoupa, red snapper, anchovy, swordfish, shark, stingray, squid or cuttlefish, shrimp, crab, blue crab, and mussel. Besides fish, seaweed is a populair resource in the water - Coffee - Cacao - Bananas - Papaya - Vanilla - Berries - Doerian - Sago - Cassava - Coconut - Various spices and herbs Rest of Flores: Corn, rice, insects, wildlife > reptiles, rats etc. Workshop starting point Fishing Cooking/eating Agricultural activities Shelter Excursions to other resources From 8:00 AM till 4:00 PM fishingboats will leave the harbour to the Flores Sea. The boat will be operated by a local fishermens. Trips will go to Komodo, Rinca and all the fishermen villages on Flores. Fresh fish will arrive in crates and will be transported to the drying area, kitchen, or directly to the restaurant. Neccessities like salt for the drying will be imported from Bali. From 8:00 AM till 6:00 PM workshops will be given for the agricultural activties. At the workshop gather point you will get all the informations/instructions. Full guidance and supporting or operate individually. Landward there are many vegatable resources. Also insects and reptiles will be found. The result of culturing each day will be assessed by the employed locals. The kitchen is open from 8:00 AM. Simple breakfast can be prepared. First cutting and preparing for dishes starts after the cleanup of breakfast. Gas will be available around noon. Staff will supervise the activities in the kitchen. They also determine the occupation. Excursions to other culturing hotspots will be organized. Ruteng, Liang Buan and Bajawa will be accessible by car. East part of the island will be accessible by taking the plane to Ende. Groups can go individually, as well be picked up with 4X4 cars. See travel map 24 accomodations in total. 2 and 4-6 person houses paired together in a spatial plan that follows the altitudes of the landscape. 16 for visitors, 8 for staff (various). Accomodations will be used for sleeping, washing and relaxing in the evening after diner. Houses are made out of local wood and a reed roof for ventilation purpose. First floor contains a private section for sleeping and veranda. Second floor has a viewing platform. Restaurant contains a buffet. You can choose from all the local specials that are prepared that day. There are many variants of Ikan Bakar to choose from. Supplies Supplies Supplies Supplies Information center: You will get instructions about Kitchen / restaurant: Kitchen is directly accessible from the Gravel road to the main-road of the island. 4x4 is Fishing harbour: Mooring for arriving visitors and for fishing the program. A mentor will be designate. workshop area / gathering square to bring fresh ingredients recommended. directly into the kitchen. trips. Storage and supplies: All the tools and materials you need to do cultural activities will be stored in here. After the kitchen comes the restaurant. It s even directly accessible from the harbour via the slope. Supplies 2 types accomodations: 2 persons and 4-6 persons 24
Design Building principals - All neccessary facilities for preparing local dishes from dirt to dish. Logic supply chain - Independent and guided program varies - Simple layout without forced routing, program varies in time and place per dish - Using and respecting environment Durability principals - Only local resources will be used for nutrition - Spatial plan based on environmental context - Only natural building materials - Using groundwater as main-source - Using compost for the agraric activities Storyboard 25
Supplies Floorplan restaurant / kitchen Boiler to get hot water for shower etc. Diesel waterpump operating on 7:00-9:00 AM (accomodations + reservoirs kitchen) Water reservoir Gas:. weekly new cylinders Toilet compost will be collected in septic tanks Ground water Because of the steepness of the terrain it was neccessary to design a waterpump installation. This pump is located at the 0 level of the site. This workshop terrain contains a hut for material and storage. The pump will here pump up groundwater in the morning. Reservoirs will be filled for the day while people can wash themselves in their accomodations. Gas for cooking is available with gas cylinders. Daily the staff will replace them. When you enter the restaurant/kitchen building you will be directed on a ramp through towards the kitchen. Here the locals will welcome you and accompany you to your hut or the information center. Along the arrival, fresh fish will be brought in towards the restaurant, kitchen or to the workshop terrain to dry. 26
4 Brinkmann s city of knowledge In the historic center of Haarlem, the Netherlands is located an mixed-use complex consisting of shopping facilities, office-space and social housing. The complex is called the Brinkmanncomplex and has buildings that date the 17th century. Socially it s a weakspot in the touristical activities of Harlem. The municipality wants to involve more tourists to Harlem to enhance the social atmosphere. Locals experience this enhancements as well. This target is reached by transforming the complex to a hotel with public facilities that collaborate tourists and locals in active ways. The whole transformation is based on the strenghts and weaknesses of it s direct environment. Many assumptions has been made to create a complete overview of the opportunities that this transformation can offer to Haarlem.

Brinkmanncomplex Programs used Graduation thesis Mentor: Remko Remijnse Semester 3 and 4, year 4, 2017 The research that all has been done for this project forms my graduation thesis for the Bachelor study on the Hogeschool of Rotterdam. It s mainly architecture based and was aimed to give perspective in the potentions the Brinkmanncomplex in Haarlem has to enhance the social environment. The maininput for the program was the vision of the municipality to enhance the tourism to generate an enrichment of the social environt as well as generating jobs. To achieve this, I have set multiple visions and have made an overal advice for the transformation of the complex with many assumptions that together forms an overal project. Historic treasures nearby Shopping area New buildings as enrichment of old-fashioned street-scene 29
Context Mainstream locals Mainstream tourists Abstraction To Live To Live Mainstream tourists from train-station to historic center Minimal cars Shopping, cafes and restaurants To Live To Live and to work Tourist stay-zone; shopping -zone; carfree-zone Problem Main-aims Home feeling for visitors to Haarlem while staying in Haarlem Rejuvenation and enrichment of Haarlem s living climate The Brinkmann complex as a knowledge center in public space Complex physical, organizational and social context Result A good working hotel that fits the location and current time Main question How can the office area of the Brinkmann complex be transformed into a hotel in the complex physical, organizational and social context? Target audience 30
Concept Set requirements Representation of the living climate of Haarlem Meet and exchange Link private and public Flexibility Publicity Reuse of existing building mas Combining private and public functions by creating spatial lay-out for intersecting area - Extend public space - Small town at height Spacial principles Private Public Variant 1 Variant 2 Variant 3 Various spatial- and sunstudies resulted in models the building can be shaped in it s specific location. A dynamic composition of heighs arrranges the sunflow through the site which fits the requirements of each program item. The sightlines on the St. Bavokerk are key here. A compromise between building mass (quantity) and spatial acceptance (quality) had to be made.v 31
Design The routing in variant 2 was from the second floor mainly vertical. Some of the core cores ran hallways to hotel accommodations. Because the hallways are removed and there have been continuous streets between the blocks, the degree of horizontal unlocking has increased. As a result, more transitions take place in public space, what the encounters between the visitors of the complex stimulates The idea is to extend the public space of Haarlem to within Brinkmann complex. This creates a small city on the second floor. In this way, the public space is formed given for a specific purpose: Meet people and knowledge exchange. 32
