1 Team TU Delft, who we are For the Solar Decathlon 2012 we formed a multidisciplinary team with various expertise and experiences in the fields of architecture, climate design, energy production, sustainability, product development, innovation, design of construction, engineering and the built environment. The TU Delft Solar Decathlon team is organised by the Department of of the Faculty of, the Energy Club and Delft Energy Initiative. ReVolt House The team TU Delft developed a revolutionary concept for a sustainable house. For our design we combine floating and sun wise rotation with a home the ReVolt House. Floating The reasons to do a floating house is related to the sheer amount of water (partly threat, partly landscape) available in the Netherlands. There are plans to do whole neighbourhoods floating on water. We would like to contribute to that and additionally show how to solve that in a sustainable way where the water/landscape aspect gets tightly interwoven with the architecture and energy concept of our house. Rotating The house will rotate for one reason amongst others because of climatic and energy aspects. One side of the house will have a closed facade which in summer will continuously face the sun in order to shade the interior and minimize the solar heat gain inside (lesser cooling). We call this closed part of the house the "heat shield" where a passive solar cooling system will be integrated. In winter when the suns' altitude is lower, the "open" glass facades of the house will continuously face the sun. This will generate a solar heat gain for the interior (passive heating) which requires less energy for an actual heating system. Since the house is floating frictionless on water the rotation won t require much of an effort. Effects Since water reflects the sun rays we further expect having a great impact on the interior of the house in terms of daylight availability but also atmosphere. We aim to combine sustainability, low energy consumption, movement and special landscape features into a unique lifestyle and design. With this special set of design features we are confident to win the Solar Decathlon Progress on the design One part of the progress since deliverable #1 involved transport of the house. The façade elements will be divided in prefabricated elements. The technical area (incl. toilet), bed (+ cabins), kitchen, shower and audio façade will be prefabricated till a height of 2,6m. All prefabricated elements will be load bearing. Another point of progress, is the cooling method. An adiabatic cooling system (by evaporating (grey)water) will be integrated in the walls and ceiling. The passive cooling system reacts on the climate conditions, the warmer and dryer the outside air the higher cooling capacity. For this cooling method a ventilation flow is required, the flow will be exhausted by the solar chimney, located at the façade which is facing the sun. Prototypes and calculations shows promising results, but will probably combined with a secondary cooling method. Also, we are currently investigating the floatation of the house. Using materials like EPS or a

2 combination between air chambers and trusses are amongst the possibilities. The water tank will be integrated. Dissemination activities Since the admission of TU Delft to the Solar Decathlon 2012 competition, ReVolt House has been in the media with national newspaper articles, national radio interviews and many articles on websites concerning our floating, solar house. Interviews included the Dutch financial newspaper (Financieel Dagblad) and the national newspaper de Telegraaf. All press releases are shown on the revolthousewebsite: In the building fair, held in the Netherlands, named BouwBeurs, ReVolt House was present in the green square, where several sustainable developments were located. During this week long event, the ReVolt House team presented their house to the public and many interested companies.
