2 Dorking Office The team in our south-east office have over 20 years experience facilitating the creation of many of the region s recent landmark developments. FPCR are a multi-disciplinary environmental practice. Our core skills and expertise comprise: Masterplanning and Urban Design; Landscape Architecture; Environmental Impact Assessment; Ecology; Architecture; and Arboriculture. The team based at Dorking can provide a broad range of services from our core skills. We can facilitate projects to meet all stages of planning requirements and can deliver solutions for developments consisting of single units to large Garden Village infrastructure projects. We are able to apply local knowledge at a range of levels to ensure sustainable and effective outcomes. The following pages provide an outline of our core services, which are demonstrated in the subsequent regional case studies. YORK OFFICE LOCKINGTON HALL HEAD OFFICE FPCR are one of the UK s longest established and most successful Environmental Design Practices FPCR Offices, Studio 2, Dunley Hill Court, Dunley Hill Farm, Ranmore, Dorking DORKING OFFICE EXETER OFFICE
3 The Bridge, Dartford FPCR provided Landscape, Masterplanning, EIA co-ordination and Ecological surveys and guidance at The Bridge development, a 105 hectare site in Dartford. The scheme comprises a mixed-use business and innovation park, 1,500 new homes, and enhanced green infrastructure within the Thames Gateway. The site supported common lizard, slow worms, grass snakes and a large population of water vole. FPCR have been heavily involved with this project since 1999, where the masterplan was sensitively designed to protect and enhance existing habitats. Care was taken to ensure that those species recorded continue to occupy the site in perpetuity. Reptiles within the site were translocated to specifically created reserves to protect them from injury and ensure the population thrives and grows, thus maintaining their Favourable Conservation Status. Water vole trapping was undertaken over two years and transferred to a breeding facility, where their offspring was used for reintroduction around the UK. Habitats within The Bridge were created for water voles which included ditches and areas around both large lakes; the fourth generation of the original population was reintroduced into The Bridge. The site now supports a very successful mixed use community, served by an innovative Fast track guided bus network linking to Bluewater Retail Park and Dartford Station Client: Prologis Developments Location: Dartford Project Details: 105Ha site Sensitively designed Masterplan 200 water voles transferred to a breeding facility
4 Harlow, Badger Mitigation The Dorking team of ecologists were fundamental in providing effective mitigation during a two stage development. The scheme included residential development and relocation of sports facilities to areas where badger activity had been recorded. The proposed buildings and pitches were situated in close proximity to an outlier badger sett, with development works potentially disturbing or damaging the sett. A known main sett was also identified and mitigation measures adopted to incorporate this and the outlier sett. FPCR obtained a licence for the closure of the outlier badger sett, identified from the extensive surveys during optimal periods. Working closely with the client, local badger groups and Natural England, a mitigation plan was devised and implemented to protect the badgers from the planned construction works. Following the successful closure of the outlier sett, further on-site supervision was provided by our ecologists throughout the construction, including toolbox talks, excavation supervision and continued monitoring of the badger activity around the main sett and site. This subsequent monitoring concluded that the mitigation measures implemented were successful, maintaining an active, healthy badger population alongside this development and into the wider area. FPCR are also involved in masterplanning Latton Priory, the southern component of the proposed Harlow Garden City expansion. 5 A143 Haverhil 1 Great Wilsey Meadows Great Field Plantation Great Wilsey Farm Haverhill Chalkstone Fields 2 Mary Cole s View Mary Cole s Grove Great Wilsey Park, Haverhill FPCR were commissioned to provide Masterplanning, Landscape, Ecology and Arboricultural services for the masterplan proposals for this 168 hectare Strategic Greenfield Site. Coupals Road Illustrative Masterplan FPCR led the design team coordinating with other professionals to develop a masterplan proposal and carried out the Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment which formed part of the EIA for the development. A range of ecological surveys were carried out including for bats, hazel dormice, breeding birds, badger, water vole, reptiles and amphibians. Dormice were identified on the site which was recognised as being the most north eastern range for this species. A masterplan proposal was produced that incorporated numerous Category A trees identified as part of the arboricultural assessment, and structural landscape features such as areas of woodland and water features. The mixed use masterplan included 2,500 new homes with schools and a mixed use local centre set within a green infrastructure of habitats and recreation open spaces. A central green spine was designed through the centre of the site consisting of a variety of amenity grassland, meadow, wetland and woodland habitats which linked to a country park designed to balance recreation and biodiversity benefits. Visualisation of the proposed Green Infrastructure Client: Hallam Land Management Ltd Location: Suffolk Project Details: 168Ha 2,500 new homes Schools Mixed use local centre Country park
6 Wrest Park, Bedfordshire Select Client List FPCR have been commissioned to provide ecological advice for Historic England on a number of sites, most recently at Wrest Park Country Estate in Bedfordshire. Following weather damage, a Bath House, Bowling Green House and a Chinese Temple required restoration. Prior to such work the buildings were inspected by our licensed bat worker, where brown long eared bats were seen roosting within a gap in the mortar. Specific working Method Statements were written to ensure all gaps were inspected before renovation works took place. Internal inspections were also undertaken to facilitate extensive rewiring. This involved a detailed survey within roof voids and outbuildings for evidence of roosting bats. Complex work was also undertaken on the 18th Century Archer Pavilion, as restoration was needed on the domed roof to protect the magnificent trompe l œil paintings by Louis Hauduroy. The void within the dome was home to a maternity roost of brown long eared bats. FPCR successfully had a licence granted and renovation works continued with specific access points designed to ensure future occupation.
