16 Mason Neck State Park Mason Neck State Park is on a peninsula formed by Pohick Bay on the north, Belmont Bay on the south and the Potomac River on the east. The peninsula is an active heron rookery. The park also attracts several other migrating and non-migrating species of birds, including tundra swans and assorted species of duck. Bald eagles also inhabit the area. The park boasts several hundred acres of hardwood forests consisting of oaks, holly, hickory and other species of trees. In addition, several wetland areas are also found in Mason Neck. Land was purchased over the years from the Nature Conservancy. The park connects with a National Wildlife Refuge, which is more than 2,000 acres. The park opened to the public in Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge Mason Neck NWR was established in 1969 for the protection of nesting, feeding, and roosting habitat for the Bald eagles. It was the first federal refuge established specifically for the (then endangered) Bald eagle. The refuge is part of the Potomac River NWR Complex. The refuge, situated along the Potomac River on the Mason Neck peninsula, consists of 2277 acres of oak-hickory forest, freshwater marshes, and has 4.4 miles of shoreline. The refuge has the largest fresh water marsh in Northern Virginia, the largest Great Blue heron rookery in the Mid-Atlantic region (over 1400 nests), is a designated RAMSAR site, and hosts over 200 species of birds, 31 species of mammals, and 44 species of reptiles and amphibians. Eagles use the mature forests for shelter and nesting sites and the marshes, bays, and river for foraging and hunting. The refuge was listed as one of the top ten sites in the country for viewing Bald eagles.
17 Gunston Hall Plantation Gunston Hall preserves, interprets and promotes this 18th-century historic site in order to educate the public about the international significance of George Mason for his unique contribution to the universal cause of human rights. Gunston Hall offers special focus tours, family events, and scholarly symposia throughout the year. Their flagship annual events are the Plantation Christmas, a candlelit step back in time held in early December; the March Kite Festival, a day of family fun that The Washington Post considers to be among the area s finest annual events; and the Decorative Arts Symposium, which presents a full day of scholarship on topics such as 18th-century architecture, furnishings, and/or lifestyles. Bureau of Land Management s Meadowood Farm Meadowood Farm is an 800-acre special recreation management area recently acquired by BLM for recreation and other public uses. The site contains a 50-stall horse barn and hosts a variety of ecosystems providing habitat for diverse wildlife, including foxes, deer, raccoons, rabbits, and groundhogs, over 100 species of birds, and various amphibians and reptiles. Visitor Activities include Wild horse and burro viewing, bird watching, wildlife viewing, hiking, horseback riding, and environmental education. The habitat also features protected areas for blue herons, wood ducks, screech owls, bluebirds, and tree frogs.
18 Pohick Bay Regional Park Pohick Bay is a water oriented park located on the Potomac River 25 miles south of the nation's capital. Their boat launch facility is one of only 3 public access points to the Potomac River in northern Virginia and the closest to Washington DC and its famous waterfront. Pohick Bay offers canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and jon boats for rent on the weekends. In addition to water activities, the park also offers family and group camping, hiking, picnic areas and a large play area for children. For those interested in swimming, they offer one of the largest, outdoor freeform pools on the east coast! Pohick Bay Regional Park, located on Mason Neck Peninsula is an ecologically fragile land that shelters an abundance of wildlife, including the bald eagle. Nature lovers can expect to see blue birds, osprey, heron, deer, beavers and rare sightings of river otters.
