1 Monday, February 27, 2017 PRE-CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES Short Courses, I Hotel and Conference Center, Champaign, Illinois 9:00 am- 12:00 pm Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation for the Transportation Infrastructure This workshop reviews fundamental information about applied nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) technology for the transportation infrastructure. First, background information on physical phenomena that are used in NDT&E technology are reviewed; these phenomena include wave propagation, electric/magnetic fields and heat transfer. Next several prominent NDT&E technology platforms are individually described, including ultrasonic imaging with MIRA, ground penetrating radar and infra-red thermography. Finally, NDT&E testing tasks are considered and best practices discussed; measurement tasks such as slab/deck thickness determination, rebar or dowel position and depth determination, detection for internal void and delamination defects, and in-place concrete strength estimation. Instructor: John Popovics Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering 12:00-1:00- Lunch 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm A Primer on Project Correspondence for Transportation Consultants: 2017 Best Practices Join us for a review of correspondence during the life of a transportation project preliminary, contract and contract administration and when that correspondence can be detrimental to the consulting team (i.e. due to improper language, due to poor retention practices, due to clashes with statutes and other standards). This will include a discussion on contract provisions and their implications, the methods of corresponding ( , text, notes), and difficult times to manage the documentation process (i.e. job site safety concerns, rejecting non-conforming work). We will conclude the program with a look at what documentation is discoverable in the event of litigation and how to safeguard your rights to keep information private.
