03 LAST FACADE ON MARTYR SQUARE
LAST FACADE ON MARTYR SQUARE LOCATION: Beirut, Lebanon TYPE: Academic DATE: Fall 2011 STAIRS THE PROJECT In the human body, veins are continuous and interact with each others. Otherwise, we die. In the city, veins are somehow continuous, but sometimes interrupted. The following Urban Analysis acts as a precursor to an Archaeological Museum project in an effort to address this discontinuity. VEINS BUILDINGS 16
LAST FACADE ON MARTYR SQUARE LOCATION: Beirut, Lebanon TYPE: Academic DATE: Fall 2011 STAIRWAYS The stairways in the Gemmayze area act as a pathway that intersects streets and alleyways while allowing for residential entryways as well as commercial fronts STREET ALLEYWAY RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL 17
LAST FACADE ON MARTYR SQUARE VEINS LOCATION: Beirut, Lebanon TYPE: Academic DATE: Fall 2011 The continuity of the veins is clearly interactive from the Beirut River till Martyrs Square, but is interrupted at this point, to completely change form and scale. The Last Facade of Martyrs Square is right over there where the interruption happens; so its role is clearly to revive that continuity. 21 LAST FACADE ON MARTYR SQUARE LOCATION: Beirut, Lebanon TYPE: Academic DATE: Fall 2011 SEQUENCES This layer was basically the opening up of the main vein, to the so-called heart of Beirut City. It s the Urban Interaction of the Vertical elements with the Horizontal continuity. 21
LAST FACADE ON MARTYR SQUARE LOCATION: Beirut, Lebanon TYPE: Academic DATE: Fall 2011 SECTIONS The outcome is a generation of these forms, projected into the site. An architectonic element linking the area studied to Downtown Beirut, an archaeological museum situated on the Archaeology that many civilizations that have lived in Beirut have left to us, layer over layer. 22

The path has a stop at the point of the pedestrian road that links the hill from north to south. STRUCTURE SECTION 25
TRANSITIONING SPACES LOCATION: Rovaniemi, Finland TYPE: Competition DATE: Spring 2012 In collaboration with Nour Zoghby THE PROJECT People can either go in or out of the provided cold shelter and walk in the forest itself. The path continues and finally reaches to a transition buffer space which provides a shift between the path and the hotel. The path becomes the hotel. The whole concept is to have this experience of unknown and experiencing the nature even in the interior spaces provided. 26

When the hotel is reached, we provide an open branched circulation within the project itself too. The person always has a visual connection with the nature around him even in the interiors. The circulation in the whole project is public. 27
TRANSITIONING SPACES LOCATION: Rovaniemi, Finland TYPE: Competition DATE: Spring 2012 In collaboration with Nour Zoghby DETAILS The roof platforms can also be accessed and provide a circulation that leads to the forest and the observatory which is at the highest point. 28

07 THE GARDEN CITY 39
THE GARDEN CITY LOCATION: Barcelona, SPAIN TYPE: Academic DATE: Spring 2014 VALLBONA, BARCELONA Sometimes culture comes welded together, encased in concrete and filled with heavy machinery. Over time, these places become part of our city and part of our lives. Barcelona without its industry would be another city. It is vestiges like these which take us back to the times of an unbridled industrialism that did not question its rights, whether legal or aesthetic, to colonize urban centers. Economic rationalization and a new sensibility have closed down many factories, or shifted them to the city outskirts and estates. The factories of Besos are so striking because, seen from one of Vallbona s hilly viewpoints, they share the typology. Vallbona is a garden city situated on the edge of Barcelona along the Besos River. Its charming location makes it a special case to look at. It has a residential zone that is a quiet place to live in the valley along the hills and the river. On the peripheries we see developed industrial zone, with all its machines and infrastructure. Along with the green belts that are omnipresent and dominant, agricultural lands around the river makes Vallbona not only the good valley, but a very special one as well. 40
THE GARDEN CITY LOCATION: Barcelona, SPAIN TYPE: Academic DATE: Spring 2014 GREENBELTS Buffer between towns, or town and countryside. They can be used to link town and cities, help us with climate change problems, ecological network providing breathing places for people and for nature long into the future. Also, they help us with food production, here come the very important role of urban agriculture in RESIDENTIAL One of the most important goal for the residential area is to enhance the urban connections (from the urban corridors) to the Besos as a public space and greenbelt to the residents. Also, creating the Vallbona Central Garden which is the hill as a public space and greenbelt. For a nice and efficient mobility in the city, a corniche avenue is an essential promenade along the river and the valley. 41
THE GARDEN CITY LOCATION: Barcelona, SPAIN TYPE: Academic DATE: Spring 2014 INDUSTRIAL Is one of the main characteristics of the river Besos. It holds many types of industrial zones. It could be surrounded by railway, roads or waterway. Its factories constitute the industrial typology. 42
THE GARDEN CITY LOCATION: Barcelona, SPAIN TYPE: Academic DATE: Spring 2014 INDUSTRIAL TYPOLOGY: CLASSIFICATION 43
THE GARDEN CITY LOCATION: Barcelona, SPAIN TYPE: Academic DATE: Spring 2014 INDUSTRIAL TYPOLOGY: MUTATION What is the meaning of industrial mutation : is transforming industrial buildings, through space metamorphosis into events spaces that attract the residents and satisfy their impulses. Industrial typology is surrounding the site, from silos, containers to refineries. Whether we admit it or not, these structures are very appealing and interesting buildings to study and make use of. 44
