2 Heart Institute, Miraj Medical Center Miraj, Maharashtra The management at Miraj Medical Centre retained our services as original architects for the Campus to design a fully equipped state-of-the-art Heart Institute to serve the patients from Southern Maharashtra. Funded by the American Schools & Hospitals Abroad, USAID and Medical Benevolence Foundation, this ambitious project is conceived as an infill between the existing main hospital building and the burns ward. Built in a local stone masonary as a continuation element from the main hospital building, the new heart institute connects the existing main building to the south with the burns facility to the north. The new facility has a unique sense of place and identity, and is an oasis of tranquility in the medical campus. Easy wayfinding, enhanced layout efficient patient traffic flow with natural daylighting and ventilation are some of the distinguishing characteristics of the facility. The Campus Master Plan included the framework for the campus based on principles of connectivity, walkability and integration. Structured around a central mall (spine) with distinct academic and residential zones, the masterplan consists of a combination of formal and informal open spaces throughout the campus. The proposal included Master Plan Development, block and building typology, character inventory, presentation boards,community outreach and report. 6 Bharti Vidyapeeth s 500 Bed Teaching Hospital Sangli, Maharashtra Designed on a compact five acre site, this complex is a 500 bed Teaching hospital along with its related diagnostic and treatment facilities for students of Bharti Vidyapeeth s Medical College. The master plan and architectural design of the campus were developed to respond to the academic needs of a teaching hospital. The institute building is massed into hospital towers and the central atrium with administrative wing. The three mid-rise hospital towers are accessed through the central atrium. This atrium acts as a central spine that connects all key facilities and provides access via lifts to the ward towers. The roof of the atrium is punctuated with a skylight to provide a natural light within the atrium. This simple courtyard oriented approach supports the wayfinding strategy, provides natural lighting and promotes an identity unique to its setting. The site is located on the major road connecting Miraj with Sangli. The entry into the complex is considerably recessed for reasons of safety in vehicular movement and aesthetics. Instead of taking a direct straight central entrance & driveway into the porch way, an off centre entrance with a slightly diagonal entry has been created to bring about more informality in the landscaped environment. The white stone from neighbouring quarries gives a distinct identity to the hospital. The hospital building is naturally daylight and ventilated. The plants and the landscape are integrated throughout the building to bring about bright, colorful yet soothing built envirornment. Patil Deemed University wanted to build a 500-bed teaching hospital consistent with the norms laid down by the Medical Council of India. The primary requirements were an outpatients department, state of art diagnostic center, blood bank, operation theatre complex, patient rooms, with speciality in pediatrics & OBGYN, physiotherapy etc. The brief also called for academic facilities in-house with seminar / classrooms, faculty rooms etc. Built on a compact plot with tight building margins, the design is responsive to the site, climate, and the culture of the teaching hospital. The multistoreyed hospital building is divided into two storey administrative block in front and a five storey hospital block in rear, therby creating a gradual transformation of scale from a low rise to mid rise structure. 13 Bharti Vidyapeeth s Nursing and Physiotherapy College Sangli, Maharashtra Encouraged by our response to the adjacent 750 bed hospital, the Client approached us to design a 12,000 sq.m Nursing and Physiotherapy college. It was to be accommodated on a small irregular plot of 4,000 square metres, as a part of the overall master plan. The design elements from the adjacent hospital were to be repeated in the building to lend a uniform character to the campus. The fan-shaped architectural plan of the building revolves around an oval courtyard, that acts as a unifying element for the building. The classrooms and the laboratories are connected visually through courtayrd. The entrance is placed between two converging wings and is accessed under a canopy. Informal gathering spaces, contemplation points and wander paths combined with landscaped courtyard create a rich and unique sense of place for the facility. An internal road as per the town plan further splits the site into two halves. Taking advantage of this constraint, the five story Ayurveda and Homeopathy college is divided into two buildings, both arranged in a U configuration around a central courtyard. This Central courtyard acts as heart of the institute and is envisioned as a public space for informal interactions and gatherings for students and faculties. Identically conveived both the buildings have an entrance to central atroum through a two storey overhang. Arranged around the atrium are classrooms, faculty offices and laboratories. Typical requirement of an ITI- administrative wing, classrooms, and workshops, were to be adhered to. To cut the cost and reduce environmental footrprint, the building was designed with a blend of exposed basalt masonry sourced from local quarry, and claytiles over the porch therby mimicking the local vernacular architecture. The double height sloping porch creates a strong sense of arrival to the institute. The dynamic symmetry of the building at fortyfive degrees to the internal road, blends admirably along the contours. Framed views of the fields, seen from any part of the building, offer a sense of belonging to rural students. The Master Plan intends to create a compact, transit-oriented, mixeduse community organized around a grid of streets and blocks and a framework of parks and open spaces. 19 National Chemical Laboratories, Polymer Science Center Pune, Maharashtra Inspired by Polymers, a building form akin to the element Benzene was explored and used as a formative statement. The plan revolves around a central courtyard with various laboratories around it while the service areas between the laboratories act as sub-linkages to the main building. This arrangement of functional elements has many functional advantages such as a possibility of inter connectivity from both outer and inner corridors, service friendlys rear access to each lab via an outer ring road. The main building is designed for fire safety with plenty of light and cross ventilation through courtyard. The courtyard planning allows adequate opportunities for chance meetings between the scientists therby fostering closer bonds among various research groups.
