2 photo: Michiel van Loon photo: Michiel van Loon Spittelau District Heating Plant Spittelauer Lände 1090 Vienna Vienna has the persistence of its former mayor Helmut Zilk to thank for Hundertwasser having taken on the task of redesigning the exterior of the Spittelau District Heating Plant Originally Hundertwasser had opposed the idea upon consulting his friend, environmentalist Bernd Lötsch, as he had fundamental objections to a garbage-incinerating plant as long as all possibilities for avoiding garbage were not exhausted When it was promised that the plant would be equipped with the most modern emission-purification technology, and that apartments would be heated whose emissions would otherwise be a further source of pollution, Hundertwasser agreed to do the design The plain factory building was turned into a spectacular and unique work of art, and is an example of harmonic symbiosis between technology, ecology and art (text from Kunst Haus Wien) Project is not public! 1992, Artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser Michiel_van_Loon photo: Michiel van Loon 2

3 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Haus mit Veranden Buchengasse Vienna This "Haus mit Veranden" (house with verandas) consists of 250 apartments organized in a remarkable setting From a 1 and 2 story plinth carved with open spaces and private patio courtyards, the upper building is formed, drawing back from the lower, differentiated block edge The detached buildings are grouped by their terracing, cuts and projecting individual porches This approach offers the residents and neighbours open space, views and day light, despite the high density The principle of the floor plan is based on a simple module system that allows a collage of versatile floor plans A wide range of shared open spaces of different qualities and organization enrich the residential oasis, such as gardens, hot tub and sauna on the roof, playgrounds and introverted loggias Floor area/size m² Building physics consultant Technical engineer Contractor Structural engineer Client Rüdiger Lainer + Partner Hans Dworak Schmidt Reuter Strabag Vasko+Partner Ingenieure Heimbau/Eisenhof Franks photo: Frankss Take tram 6 (direction: Zentralfriedhof) and get off at tram stop Quellenstraße/Knöllgasse Walk in southern direction and you will cross Buchengasse The project is one block to your left 3

4 photo: Paul Ott photo: fasch&fuchs Busgarage Wiener Linien Katharina-Scheiter-Gasse Vienna The bus garage consists of several halls for repair and maintenance work as well as for parking the buses that run on liquid gas The halls are completed by an administrative building Order and organisation of all parts of the structure are determined by the natural order of vehicles entering the garage, being checked, refuelled, maintained and parked before again leaving The administrative structure to the north serves as linking element and spine for the two main halls (maintenance and parking) In order to guarantee optimal natural illumination without any overheating in summer, offices and staff rooms in the administrative area face north The wardrobes are placed alongside the wall separating the building from the maintenance and parking hall The building is naturally illuminated and ventilated by incised court yards on the first floor, generously providing the corridors inside with light and air photo: Paul Ott Project is not public! 5 City Tower 1 Marxergasse Vienna The 87-metre high City Tower was the first phase of the Wien Mitte construction project to be completed Its figure reacts to the urban topography Following the bend made by the River Wien two different directions in the urban plan, at an angle to each other, interlock here The massive building plinth clad with reddish sandstone follows the line of the street and connects to the existing development The tower that rises above it is terminated by a glass cube, swivelled in relation to the main volume of the building Ten-metre-tall loggias create transparent transitions from the street to the large entrance hall and the 30-metre-highl, glass-roofed atrium which forms a communicative centre point 2004 Main designer, Neumann + Partner Ortner & Ortner Nazar 5

6 Wien Mitte Landstraßer Hauptstraße 1b 1030 Vienna The railway station Wien Mitte is seven minutes on foot from the historic centre of the city, Stephansplatz The station itself is a hub for all important local transport lines This is where the Wien Mitte Centre is to be created: a slab measuring m² erected above the tracks on which the new centre is defined architecturally by an L-shaped glass block that, together with the existing market hall, forms an open U in the direction of Marxerbrücke In the enclosed internal area two sculptural building volumes determine the appearance: the glass banana along the market hall and the ski boot, a hook-shaped high-rise that soars above the ensemble Wien Mitte photo: Ortner & Ortner 2010 Ortner & Ortner Nazar 6

7 photo: Dirk Verwoerd Plus Zwei Vorgartenstraße Vienna For Plus Zwei, Martin Kohlbauer focused on transparent architecture and eye-catching shapes In total, OMV has roughly 41,000 m² of state-of-the-art office space at its disposal The grounds of the Viertel Zwei project are located directly along the new section of the U2 metro line, between Vorgartenstraße and the Krieau racing track, and are right next to the Messe Wien convention centre The city centre is just a few metro stations away, and several main motorways are in the direct vicinity photo: Dirk Verwoerd 2009 Developer Martin Kohlbauer Architekt IC Projektentwicklung Nazar 7

8 Project Space of Kunsthalle Wien Treitlsstraße Vienna The Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna is a non-collecting art centre which organizes and hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary art It opened in 1992, and was originally located on Karlsplatz, in a container-shaped building designed as a temporary site by the n architect Adolf Krischanitz In 2001, it moved into a new building in the Museumsquartier, along with other museums from Vienna The Kunsthalle is international in scope and has a remit to exhibit local, national and international artists The temporary building erected in 1992 on Karlsplatz was heavily criticized and debated in the n press It was replaced by a smaller glass construction, which now serves as a "project space" exhibiting emerging artists and special group exhibitions for the Kunsthalle One of the Kunsthalle's two cafes is also located on the old site 2003 Adolf Krischanitz Nazar 8

9 photo: Monika Nguyen photo: Monika Nguyen Lingenhel Landstrasser Hauptstrasse Vienna Shop, bar, restaurant and cheese dairy - the project "Lingenhel" is very unique and was therefore quite an extraordinary challenge The visual and spatial identity for Johannes Lingenhel's culinary-gastronomic vision was developed from scratch for this project, since no corresponding definition of it existed initially The two cornerstones of this architectural concept are the project's listed building on Landstrasser Hauptstrasse in Vienna and Lingenhel's corporate identity Its counters, bars, and presentation furniture evoke images of cubically stacked wooden beams, which were inspired by the beams of the historic roof truss Surface structures and haptics play significant roles in this concept Patination reflects their change, which develops over the course of time; as a result, the building's long history as well as the production processes of certain foods find their place in this house photo: Monika Nguyen 2016, Interior architect destilat destilat Monday to Saturday h 9

10 photo: Hotel Schani photo: Hotel Schani Hotel Schani Karl-Popper-Straße Vienna Hotel Schani Wien in the n capital appears futuristic in many respects, and consequently a few steps ahead of other hotels As early as the construction phase in 2014, Hotel Schani received the GreenBuilding award from the European Commission Even before the official opening, the project received the Hotel & Design Award 2015 in the category ure of the Year It is part of the "Quartier Belvedere", the area around the new main train station of Vienna The design of the hotel is a modern interpretation of the old Viennoise styles, but with a rather easy going feel than the heaviness sometimes found in Viennoise establishments 2014, Interior architect Supplier Archisphere architects & designers GIRA GIRA photo: Hotel Schani The hotel is very close to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) of Vienna 10
