The Building Crafts Award and the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Awards are presented to individuals rather than projects. There are nine categories of Awards.

This category reflects a continued increase of entries in the Small Scale category and covers restoration, conversion or new-build properties of two to ten units inclusive.

2 Sussex Heritage Trust Awards will be the 19th year of the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards, which are designed to recognise and reward high quality conservation, restoration and good design of newly built projects and encourage the use of traditional skills and crafts. A wide variety of projects have received Awards including large country houses converted into luxury apartments; a redundant water pumping station, a well pump with ice house, a variety of mills, barns, oasts and outbuildings all saved from dereliction and transformed into homes and offices; restored and re-ordered churches, towers and spires; reclaimed and restored gardens and even dovecotes; together with new and contemporary homes, art galleries, museums and theatres. We would like to see more new buildings entered for awards this year and would welcome applications from architects, developers and owners. The Building Crafts Award and the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Awards are presented to individuals rather than projects. There are nine categories of Awards. Last year, we introduced the Mid-Scale The 2016 Sussex Heritage Trust Award winners and highly commended projects. This category reflects a continued increase of entries in the Small Scale category and covers restoration, conversion or new-build properties of two to ten units inclusive. Winners of Awards receive a hand crafted slate plaque which is to be attached to the winning project. There may also be Highly Commended projects in any given category. All parties involved in the winning projects receive certificates. The judging teams usually comprise a Sussex Heritage Trust Trustee, a professional in the appropriate field and a lay person to ensure a balanced view. All are volunteers and receive no remuneration. The criteria include the project s suitability of purpose, the best use of the site, the quality of workmanship and suitability of materials used. Could you nominate an individual who is committed to and worked tirelessly for the heritage of Sussex who could win the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Award? Is there a craftsperson or young apprentice who deserves praise and recognition for their efforts who could win a Building Crafts Award? We recommend that planting be established before entering the project. The Ecclesiastical Building Award A restoration, repair, conversion or development scheme, which improves all, or part of an existing or former ecclesiastical building whilst maintaining, where appropriate, its ecclesiastical or consecrated status. The Public & Community Award A restoration or new project, which provides or improves facilities for the community. Examples include village halls, clubrooms, signs, museums, schools, libraries, open spaces and entertainment facilities. Open to individuals and organisations including councils, clubs, societies, associations etc. The Building Crafts Award An example of high quality work by a craftsperson or young apprentice using traditional skills or crafts, e.g. thatch, flint, plaster, iron, stone, wood, glass, and other materials etc., which repairs or enhances architectural features. This award is given to the person rather than the project. The Sussex Heritage Trust Person of the Year Award The recognition of one person s outstanding commitment to the heritage of Sussex. The person may work in a voluntary or paid capacity. Please enclose a letter including the nominee s name, address and telephone number and why you believe they deserve this year s award. 5 design for the future, respect for the past News from Sussex Heritage Trust 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the Sussex Heritage Trust, which was founded in 1977 to preserve, improve and encourage the appreciation of the architectural and natural landscape of Sussex. Forty years on, our annual Sussex Heritage Awards scheme is now recognised as the most prestigious architectural and conservation programme in East & West Sussex and Brighton & Hove. The Awards and Highly Commended projects for 2016 were announced on 7th July at Pangdean Old Barn, Pyecombe. A 2016 winner was the UTC@Harbourside, Newhaven, a conversion and extension of two listed, 19th-century harbourside marine workshops for a new University Technical College. The judges described this project as an outstanding regeneration project of high architectural quality and local historical significance. The 2017 Awards scheme is to be launched at UTC@Harbourside, sponsored by Harvey s Brewery, on 9th February This is the first time the launch has been sponsored and we are grateful to long-term supporters, Harvey s Brewery, for their continued generosity. Towards the end of 2016, we launched our campaign to save the remaining red K6 telephone boxes in Sussex. The development of mobile technology has made many of these telephone boxes redundant, yet they are still regarded with Lord Egremont and Dr John Godfrey at the 2016 Awards luncheon affection in their local communities. In partnership with the South Downs National Park Authority, the Sussex Association of Local Councils and BT, we prepared and published a guide offering advice on how local communities can become involved in their future management, both to serve their original purpose and also for a range of new functions. Finally, I am delighted to announce that our President and Lady Egremont have most kindly agreed to host a black-tie dinner on 6th October at Petworth House to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Trust. Tim Parker, the Chairman of the National Trust and a Sussex resident, has kindly agreed to be our after-dinner speaker, when he will outline his vision for the future of the National Trust and discuss how he feels county-based trusts such as ours can complement the work of his organisation.
