4 SAPPORO, JAPAN The name of Sapporo originated from the Ainu language Sat-Poro-Pet (Large dried-up river). It is located in the Southwest corner of Hokkaido s Ishikari Plain. LOCATION HOKKAIDO TERRITORY SAPPORO 4

6 CLIMATE Sapporo is affected by many earthquakes a year. In the past year there have been 31 earthquakes. It is important to design a structure strong enough to withstand against the many earthquakes Sapporo faces. The months with the most rainfall are May, June, July, August, September, and October. The coldest months are January and February. The warmest month is August. January is the coolest month. August is also the most rainy month. 7 In Japan it is normal to sit on the floor while dining at a low table and considered polite to take off your shoes at the entrance and put on slippers. Sentos (communal bath houses) are common in Japan. Each sex is separated into different baths. It is required to bathe before entering the communal bath. After bathing one enters the bath to soak and relax with others. It s common to hear people say, gokuraku, gokuraku which translates to divine pleasure when entering the bath. The bath is a pleasing to the body and good for the soul. CULTURE SAPPORO SNOW FESTIVAL This festival usually occurs in February for a week. It is the biggest and most popular festival in Sapporo. About 2 million people travel to take part in this festival held in Odori Park. The festival consists of displaying hundreds of extremely detailed snow sculptures. Sapporo, Japan is also known for its many festivals hosted there throughout the year. There are about 73 festivals hosted in Sapporo each year. The three most popular festivals are the Snow Festival, Yosakoi Festival, and the Sapporo Beer Festival. YOSAKOI FESTIVAL This festival is held in June every year. During the festival teams of and onlookers take part in dancing the traditional Yosakoi dance. Teams perform on stage and on the streets of Odori Park. SAPPORO BEER FESTIVAL This festival is held in Odori Park for a month in the summer. The festival is over eight blocks and includes celebrating and drinking the famous Sapporo beer. 7

8 PRECEDENT STUDIES STUDY 1 KIMAMAYA BOUTIQUE HOTEL 9 Rooms Location: Niseko, Hokkaido, Japan Designed by: Koichi Ishiguro This room creates a secondary sleeping and activity space for guests. This two story suite is a unique design that provides space for more people to stay in one suite. The dark colors in the suite make the space an intimate, relaxed space. The thin, intimate, dark colored hallway leading to the spa along with stepping stones leading directly to a light at the end of the hall all make the spa feel like a destination. The use of natural materials and colors on the walls and flooring makes you feel as if you are outside with nature. The hallway prepares you for the spa by making you feel relaxed and calm. DESIGN IMPLICATIONS: Straight, clean lines will be included in the space to emphasize the modern Japanese idea of simplicity in design. Natural materials will be used to mimic being outside with nature. Dark colors will be used in specific places to create an intimate setting. Citation: 8

9 STUDY 2 THE GATE HOTEL KAMINARIMON 136 Rooms Location: Tokyo, Japan Designed by: Shigeru Uchida There is no applied ornamentation. The chandelier and the view are the emphasis of the room. There is no flooring change to separate specific spaces so it is important to have spaces grounded with ceiling designs. The round sofa creates a space within itself. Because the ceilings are high, it is important to make things more at a human scale by making the flooring and furniture dark. The clean rectangular lines and jet-black entry facade lets those know on the outside that this is a high-end place. The use of the black horizontal lower portion of the building grounds the tall structure to human scale and makes the size of the building not so intimidating to those on the ground. 9 DESIGN IMPLICATIONS: In my design I plan to keep walkways clear to create a simplistic and clean look but include many unique architecture features on the ceiling that designate spaces from each other. I also think it is important to make the scale more humanistic interior and exterior as they have done with the dark furniture and flooring interior. Exterior the dark black lower facade is less intimidating because it brings the scale of the building down. The darker horizontal focus on the lower portion of the building is very successful. 10 STUDY 3 SATOYAMA JUJO 12 Rooms Location: Minami-Uonuma City, Japan Designed by: Architecture-Toru Iwasa and Kei Kaihoh, Interior Design- Shun Kawakami, Ryuichi Ohira & Kanzo Shibata The neutral color palette with pops of muted colors makes the space a relaxing one to be in. The color in the space also creates a way finding feature. The large porte cochere and canopy extruding from the entry make the space feel welcoming. The opaque doors however at the entry make entering feel a little intimidating because you cannot see what is on the other side of the doors. The use of wooden doors is a success in matching the porte cochere wood used but would be more successful if glass was also implemented in the doors to make entering the space less intimidating. The doors are also oversized which makes way finding simple; you know you are supposed to go through those large doors to enter the space. 10

11 The lack of clutter in the space makes it a calming environment. The unique shape of the furniture and natural texture of the materials used make the space interesting. DESIGN IMPLICATIONS: I plan to use oversized entry doors to enter the hotel. I also plan to incorporate many natural colors and materials that have natural texture and various colors in them to make the guest feel as if they are one with nature. The large windows are ideal for plenty of light in the space and views to nature, which have proved to be calming and good for the body. I will also incorporate a large porte cochere that welcomes guests as they arrive at the hotel. It will protrude from the building to protect guests from the weather. The use of natural materials and large windows exposing the surrounding scenes makes the space feel as if it is one with nature. Citation: 11

13 HOTEL TRENDS AND INSPIRATION Simplistic lines and unique furnishings Personalized check in using new technology is popular, therefore eliminating the need for the check in counter. This creates a more personalized experience with each guest who visits the hotel. Living room like public spaces make the guest feel like they can actually use the provided public spaces to relax and spend time in. A blurred distinction between the interior and exterior achieved by combining exterior materials and elements on the interior. Unique fixtures and appliances make the space unique. Detail needs to be put into every touch of the design. Recycled Kimonos-Local products really bring culture into a space. Multi-functional furniture saves space and makes each piece of furniture unique therefore enhancing the personalized experience in the hotel. 13

16 CONCEPT The design for the hotel will be inspired by the city GRID system of Sapporo, Japan. The streets of Sapporo create many small rectilinear blocks organized in a grid throughout the city. The various city blocks make it simple to navigate the city of Sapporo for the vast amount of people living in the area. The ideas of simplicity and ORGANIZATION will be displayed in the layout and architectural details of the hotel. The hotel will have grid like space planning for easy wayfinding and include geometric architectural features to emphasize the organization of the design. Sapporo is also known for its many festivals held annually in the city. Various colors will be used throughout the design of the space juxtaposing a natural color palette to emphasize the importance of the many DISTINCTIVE festivals in the city. Natural material resources from Japan will be used to emphasize the culture and history of Japan within the design. The overall design of the space will evoke a mood of CLARITY in the midst of DIVERSITY. SIMPLE GEOMETRIC NATURAL INDIVIDUAL The map of Sapporo, Japan is in a grid made of various rectangles and squares. The city blocks are very close together compared to the size of city blocks in America. Indicates Hotel Location 16

Include unique materials and furnishings in various spaces in the hotel to spark curiosity and interest. 4. Use local materials in the design of the hotel. 17

22 SCHEME 1 BLOCKING DIAGRAM KEY PUBLIC AREA EMPLOYEE AREA SECONDARY PATH It is important for all of the employee areas to be connected so that the employees can work and move around swiftly. All areas that guests would go to are surrounded by a central entry and lobby. The kitchen is connected to two different back of house areas to maximize storage and movement around the bar and restaurant without disturbing those eating. The four king suites on these floors are spread out on the corners to maximize balcony space. This layout also maximizes the amount of guest rooms that can be fit onto the floor. 26 SCHEME 2 BLOCKING DIAGRAM KEY PUBLIC AREA EMPLOYEE AREA The entrance in scheme 1 will be on the corner to maximize the grand entry into the space. All employee only spaces are connected to maximize efficiency of the staff. LEVEL 1 SECONDARY PATH MAJOR PATH The kitchen is located between the lounge/ bar and restaurant so that food can be taken from the kitchen to either area without disturbing guests. The back of house space would be used for storage and laundry facilities. Every other floor between 3 and 8 would have this space layout. This maximizes the optimal views available in this location to those in the king suites. Every other floor not this layout would be king suites on the corners and regular guest rooms in the other space available, similar to scheme 1. LEVEL 2 LEVEL

The restaurant and lounge/bar will maximize the windows of the structure. The back of house area is located away from the main elevator area to avoid crowding near the elevator with supplies and linens when things are being taken to and from guest rooms. 30
