Saturday, December 7 Adopt a Tree (event for children) Warriors Path State Park 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Young people are invited to come help plant the future! For each tree that you plant in the park, you get to take one home. Each tree will mean that much more wildlife habitat, as well as cool shade and fresh air for future children! 3 SAPS Membership 2014 Time to think about renewing your SAPS membership for 2014! Since its beginning in 1995, SAPS has never had an increase in dues. As you know, the cost of everything has increased drastically over the last 19 years and SAPS has not been spared these increases. Our costs for meeting space, speaker fees and expenses, along with printing and distribution of the newsletter, have risen sharply. As a result, SAPS has operated at a deficit for the last two years. To continue providing you the level of gardening information and activities you expect, an increase in dues has become necessary. Thus, effective in 2014, membership dues will be $20 annually. The good news is membership dues will continue to include both you and your spouse and you will continue to receive the SAPS 10% vendor discount card. A full slate of informative programs, exciting trip opportunities and Members Only events have already been planned for 2014 the only thing missing is you! SAPS is a partner in the Brent and Becky's Bulbs Bloomin' Bucks Program. For all purchases, B&B kicks back 25% of sales to SAPS (if you designate). 5 WREATH MAKING WORKSHOP AT EXCHANGE PLACE Exchange Place Living History Farm, 4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport, will hold its annual Wreath Making Workshop on Thursday, December 5 th, from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. With inspiration and guidance from Christy Shivell of Shy Valley Native Habitat Nursery and Herbary, participants will create a unique evergreen wreath to take home. All materials fresh greenery (holly, magnolia, cedar berries, pine, yew, etc.), cones, dried flowers, wreath form, and wire will be provided. The cost for the day is $30 ($25 for SAPS members) and includes all materials and a soup lunch. To reserve your place, mail check, payable to "Exchange Place," to: Joy Moore, P.O. Fresh greenery and trees, handcrafted wreaths and roping, unique folk arts and handcrafts, herbal products and traditional holiday foods will be on sale. The celebration also features hands on activities for all ages and demonstrations of hearthside cooking and baking on the 19 th century farmstead. The traditional Yule Log Ceremony with carol singing around the bonfire and a cauldron of wassail begins at 4:15 p.m. Admission is free. Without your help, setting up in advance, organizing the food table, and clean up afterwards this event would not happen. I saw many happy smiling faces as folks carried plants off to their vehicles at the end. Nothing thrills a gardener like sharing plants and getting new ones. Upcoming classes will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting January 14, 2014 and ending March 11, 2014 from 6-9pm at the Southwest Higher Education Center in Abingdon, I-81 Exit 14. The cost of the class is $130, which includes a copy of the Master Gardener Handbook, A Guide to Gardening in Virginia, a 600-page horticulture reference guide.
