1 Newsletter for Since 2000, and still growing we dig life! P resident s Message: What an interesting summer it is! Despite strange weather, our gardens continue to persist and do what they need to do, don t they? It has rained all spring, we have had heat waves, cooling periods, and amazing storms and yet the colors are brilliant, foliage is lush, and grass needs mowing just as often as ever! I hope you take a moment each day to appreciate the wonder of what happens outside your door. I try to no matter how busy life gets. As for being busy, we have worked hard to get plenty of work done on the Macedonia Memorial Park project. If you haven t been by, or had a chance to help, go on over and enjoy the beautifully revived space. We still have work to do, so don t feel left out if you didn t get to help during the first phase. We will now wait until fall to plant a gallery of trees and for that we will need lots of help. Thanks to Kerry Wichert for organizing things once again she has done a wonderful job. We will also get to enjoy Mary Caudill Chieffe s wedding reception at the Thorn Creek Winery in Aurora this weekend, to which she has graciously invited us. I have heard from many who are going, and hope many more are too. If you want to take a look, you can see the winery by going to this link: See you Saturday! Finally, next Wednesday, the 20 th, is our Annual Member Picnic Potluck. We will be at Sagamore Hills Park again, and we re keeping things simple. There are more details inside the newsletter, but I want to encourage everyone to come, and to bring their favorite side dish to share. We will have chicken for everyone, so come hungry! July is zooming by our special August meeting will be here before we know it. In the meantime, enjoy your gardens, and your families and friends, and don t forget to breathe! Take care everyone. Because of the weather forecast, the date of this Friday, July 22 nd, has been cancelled for volunteering at Hale Farm & Village. The next date will be scheduled and possibly announced at our club picnic on Wednesday. Also another will be sent out with the date and details. So stay tuned! When scheduled they meet at 8:00 AM in Marc s parking lot to car pool to Hale Farm. Bring water, a lunch, sunhat and any tools. Hale Farm will have rakes, shovels and a wheelbarrow in the pavilion for our use. Hale Farm does not have anyone to do any tidying up and this would really make a difference. This could develop into a great outreach program for our club by keeping this beautiful Ohio Historical site in great shape (and only once a month!) So, join the fun at our lovely Hale Farm & Village. Call Jackie ( ) or Betty ( ), if you have any questions. Where liberty dwells, there is my country. ~Benjamin Franklin

The Parks people have taken over the watering. Thank goodness! Jan Filmeck goes there every week and sees the evidence of watering. It should be their responsibility anyway. The water tank they put in for us was not sufficient, so they use their 200 gallon tank which they put on their truck. Plantings for the Park include, Knock-out Roses in pink and rose, Oak Leaf Hydrangeas around the gazebo, Quickfire Hydrangeas near the front, 2 Alberta Spruces, many Marcus (miniature) Purple Salvia, and Petunias in the entry pots with Center Grasses, plus many Geraniums, Spirea, Perennial Hibiscus, and a Japanese Birch Tree. We plan to plant more trees this Fall along the street side of S. Bedford Rd. The Parks people have been very quick to help us with every need required; and we did receive $100 from the Mayor and $50 from Vrabel/Braun Insurance in the Village. Thank you to all who worked on the beautification committee and dedicated their time to help on this project! (See page 4 for pictures). Kerry Wichert ( ) JULY BIRTH FLOWER The Larkspur can be confused with the Delphinium as they look similar and both are members of the butter cup family. The Larkspur is an annual while the Delphinium is a perennial. The meaning of the Larkspur is open heart and ardent attachment, and symbolizes carefree summer days. Larkspurs were popular during Victorian times and associated with strong romantic feelings by their specific color: pink signified fickleness, white a happy go lucky nature, and purple represented first love and a sweet disposition.
4 Wednesday, July 20 th Membership Picnic Our members only picnic will be held again at the Sagamore Hills Park Pavilion. Time: 6:00 PM to begin setup. Wednesday, August 17 th, 2011 Program The and Greenwood Village Landscape Committee are hosting a joint meeting on August 17th featuring an illustrated talk by Tom Sampliner on native plants of Northeast Ohio. Sampliner is a past president of the N.E. Ohio Native Plant Society and past editor of the Journal of the Native Plant Society of N.E. Ohio. He is also an instructor at Tri-C College where he teaches courses in gardening and nature photography. Refreshments will be served at 6:30 and attendees will be given an introduction to both organizations prior to the main speaker of the evening. A social hour will follow. 7 JULY GARDEN CLUB MEMBER FEATURE PHYLLIS KLUBER Just a routine day at Phyllis Kluber s home what a sweet experience! How long have you been gardening? I have been gardening since my childhood. My parents moved to Sagamore Hills in 1956 on Dunham Road. During the 60 s there were still many open fields and wooded lots. While wandering in the woods I would dig up saplings and plants and bring them home to our yard. In fact the Jack-in-the Pulpit plants I have growing in my yard now are the offspring of a plant I brought home as a kid from the woods on the corner of Dunham & Sagamore. How long have you been a member of the club? I think it has been about 5 years now. If time or money would not be a factor, what would you add to your garden? Huge boulders and rocks with a recirculating streambed running thru. What are some things you really enjoy about gardening? I love being close to nature and observing wildlife. Gardening also has a way of relaxing & reenergizing me after a stressful day or week. What plant or flower has been your biggest challenge? I would have to say Delphiniums. If you could have only one plant in your garden, what would it be? Hostas, as there is such a wide variety of colors and sizes. They are also easy on the budget, as you can start out with one plant of many varieties and be able to divide them in no time. Are you going to try anything new this year in the garden? I am growing Brussels Sprouts in the vegetable garden this year. I have read that if you leave them on the plant until after a hard frost they taste much sweeter. We shall see about that. July, the dog days of summer a time to focus on garden maintenance, watering, and enjoying our gardens. With the higher temps and scorching sun this month, it s a good idea to avoid most gardening tasks during the warmest hours, drink plenty of water, and use plenty of sunscreen. See you at the picnic!
