4 JUNE GARDEN CLUB FEATURE JANE LEBZELTER How long have you been gardening? For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed playing in dirt and watching things grow. I helped my grandmother weed her garden and still have a bleeding heart from that garden. How long have you been a member of the club? I joined in the club's third year. If time or money would not be a factor, what would you add to your garden? I like plants with interesting foliage--variegated, gray, and spiny, etc. I would like to design and plant a foliage garden using these plants. I could use the smoke tree that I bought at the plant sale for a focal point. What are some things you really enjoy about gardening? Walking around my yard each morning with my coffee and my kitty to see what has changed from the day before, gives me the most satisfaction. What plant or flower has been your biggest challenge? Delphiniums have given me problems. If you could have only one plant in your garden, what would it be? I won a beautiful Lace Cap from Suncrest at a club meeting. Hydrangeas have become a favorite. They're long blooming and easy to care for. Are you going to try anything new this year in the garden? No, I haven't yet. We have sent a Thank You card to the Girl Scouts (Troup from Lee Eaton Elementary) for their help at our Plant Sale. In addition, each girl received a small Mother's Day potted plant. Their Troup was building a butterfly garden and mentioned this to us the day of our Plant Sale. We donated the following for their project. 59 Daffodils a bin of day lilies 6 Irises 1 Heuchera 2 Grasses 1 Liatris 1 Forget-me-not It is proudly displayed on the north east corner of Routes 82 and Old 8.

8 2012 NORDONIA HILLS GARDEN CLUB GARDEN TOUR Grab your gardening hat! This Sunday, June 10, 2012, is our annual garden tour rain or shine. Six of our members have graciously opened their gardens for our members to tour, starting at 1:00 p.m. Then at 4:30 we will have a pot luck at Phyllis Kluber's home. Paper and plastic ware will be provided along with coffee and non-alcoholic beverages. Please bring an entree, side dish, salad or dessert to share along with any additional beverage you may want. And don't forget, there will be a prize for the Best garden hat! When visiting the gardens watch for curbside signs with our pink and green logo or NHGC on it with balloons. This year's gardens--- Dottie Krieger, 146 Lowrie Blvd., Northfield Village, Ohio Dottie's garden sits amongst some very tall trees, so her garden is shaded most of the day. Come see her brick patio surrounded with plants of many different colors and shapes, most of which are perennials. She has a lovely stone walkway in the back of the yard leading to a bed of ferns and hostas. Jackie Seremak, 62 Butternut Lane, Northfield Center, Ohio Jackie's gardens are a mix of sun and shade plants and everything in between. She has been at her home for 40 years so her gardens are well established, but always changing she says. She has it all; a pond, windmill, barn, a bella garden, along with vegetables mixed into the established beds. A screened porch and sunroom offers beautiful views of the outside and all are used daily. She thinks of her home as a cottage, inviting to all, but especially to her wild musicians, ducks, insects and even her four legged furry friends. They are all welcome on her acre of heaven where The Door Yard is always open. Sue Jerabek, 127 Kenwick Drive, Northfield, Ohio This shaded yard was home to an in-ground pool from 1970 to 2000 when it cracked, died and was buried. She has now designed a raised garden in its place and has been trying to raise some sun-loving plants in about the only sun she has in her oak wooded grove. Joanne & Lowell Altizer, 117 Scupper Lane, Northfield, Ohio Joanne says she is a novice gardener still trying to find what works best for them. There is a circular bed in the backyard that is mostly perennials. They have a little bridge in the back of the yard that goes over a small creek and a nice mix of annuals and perennials backed by a small hill going to the neighbor's property that is natural and wild. There is a small pond area and waterfall on the backside of the house containing pond plants. They have a deck with two levels where they have a few container gardens. As an interesting side note, she has bordered the back beds in red brick which are from the home she grew up in. A great memory for her. They are about 80 years old, the bricks, not her she says! Necia Cerveny, 6361 Olde Eight Road, Boston Heights, Ohio Color, I have color now that I garden in the sun! says Necia. She just installed a preformed pond last weekend and is quite proud of that. She says her gardens will always be a work in progress and some need to mature, but otherwise her backyard is a paradise to her and her family. (Continued on next page)

9 Phyllis Kluber, 83 W. Hines Hill Road, Boston Heights, Ohio Sitting amongst a mature pine forest can make gardening in dry shade challenging. There is a woodland garden in the backyard and a goldfish pond next to the patio behind the house. Up beyond the barn you will find a vegetable garden with an A-frame cold frame made from discarded windows and Plexiglas. Surrounding the vegetable garden is a perennial border, one of the few areas with some full sun. Be sure to stop and say hello to the chickens. NHGC GARDEN TOUR DIRECTIONS While it is not necessary to follow along in this order, it may be more convenient for most members.
