I just pulled out my euonymous that was climbing up my chimney, it was so covered with scale and I knew it was the right thing to do. Now, I have to think about what to put in it s place. I want to thank everyone who has stepped up to run for a board position and to those who will be our new chair people for various committees, i.e., publicity, refreshments, photographer, plant sale, and more... It really shows me, that we all care about the future of our wonderful garden club which means we will continue to grow and have new ideas and events. 3 2008 Christmas Dinner The cost is $20.00 for each member and each guest attending. We will not be having a gift exchange this year, instead we will be enjoying the fun games that Ann O Neal has agreed to create for us. The Board has purchasing several nice prizes for the winners. We had to agree to a minimum of 50 meals. If we are unable to sell enough tickets to cover that amount, the balance will have to come out of the club bank account. So please, everyone make your plans to attend and bring a guess, so we can all celebrate the beginning of the holiday s together. 4 October Garden To Do List There is nothing like the satisfaction of seeing a garden tidied up for its winter nap. Here are a few tips to help you get your own garden ready for good winter nap. * Cut back your perennial foliage after a killing freeze. For a wildlife-friendly garden, cut back plants that have had disease problems during the growing season but leave stems and seed heads that will provide food and shelter for birds. * Mark areas where hardy volunteers have dropped their seeds so that next spring you can be on the look out for the seedlings. * When using dried flowers with fuzzy seed heads, spray them with hair spray to keep them from shattering. * Rake up and remove any leaves on your lawn. It is important to remove dead leaves because over time they will form a dense mat that smothers your grass. * Clean and oil garden tools before storing for winter. * Protect your water features from fall leaves with netting. Stretch the netting over the water surface and secure the edges. Remove the leaves that land on the netting on a regular basis. * Before you put away your mower, drain gasoline and take it to the shop for any needed repairs. It s also a good time to have the blades sharpened and balanced. * Use hardware cloth to wrap around the base of small fruit trees and roses. This will protect them from rodents. * Transplant deciduous trees and shrubs after the leaves have fallen. * Pot up amaryllis bulbs now for indoor blooms during the holidays. * Hill soil to a height of 8 to 10 inches around roses for winter protection then mulch after the ground freezes. * Save packets of half used seeds in airtight containers in a cool dry place. * Now is the time to plant spring flowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and globe alliums. Living with Wildlife, (Deer...) Eagle Creek Garden Center hosted a seminar with speaker Sandra VanAllen Baker from Irondequoit, NY, who talked about dealing with ways to save your garden from deer. Sandra talked about a 5 step plan to deer proof your garden. 1) learning about deer behavior; 2) plant selection and landscaping; 3)organic repellents and other deterrents; 4) Fencing that deer are either unable or unwilling to navigate and ending with the knowledge that you will have learned how to develop a strategic plan to deer proof your own garden. Eagle Creek and Sandy provided handouts with updated listing of plants that deer: 1) rarely eat, 2) occasionally nibble and 3) frequently devour. The main thing I came away with, was that the deer s appetite can change from one year to another so you yourself need to be changing. If there are some things you really want to grow, that are one of the deer favorite items, that sometimes planting them amongst other plants that they don t usually bother might save your precious ones such as tulips. Many folks in the audience had success with using a scarecrow device. This is a motion sensor that will puts out a strong stream of water. Just enough for it to scare the deer/rabbit/squirrels away. Another good point that Sandra brought up, was that it takes deer seven, (7) days to become accustom to a new sight or smell. So, if you are using strongly scented soap or drier sheets to keep them out of your flowers, you will need to move and change them every week in order for this method to be useful. Dawn and dust are when deer are most active and what they eat in a two hour period of time will hold them for 24 hours. Deer also have trouble with depth perception so certain types of fencing offer relief. Sandy suggested visiting the national Humane Society s web site for more information: October

5 September 17th Meeting Hydrangeas Our September speaker, Rob Cowie is the Director of Operations for the Retail Division of Suncrest Gardens. He has an ASA in Horticulture from Ohio State University, and is passionate about horticulture and the garden center industry. He has been in the business since the age of 16 and is recognized in the area as an entrepreneurial leader and a source of great insight, expertise, and enthusiasm on variety of topics relating to all things green. Rob s presentation was on the characteristics, soil requirements, appropriate placement pruning and over-wintering of hydrangeas. Rob was enjoyed by all. Excellent speaker on this topic. Recipes Jane Lebzelter Corn Casserole 1 stick of margarine (soften) 4 eggs 2 c milk 2 c sour cream 2 boxes jiffy corn bread mix 2 cans whole corn, (drained 2 cans creamed style corn Mix together all ingredients and bake 1 hour at 350º This makes a 9 x 13 pan, plus a 1 quart casserole. You can half the recipe for a smaller amount. Irene Wozniak Pineapple Squares 1 lb margarine 3 c flour 1 small carton of sour cream Cut margarine into flour, mix into sour cream. Chill over night. Roll out half of the dough. Dust the dough with flour as it has a tendency to stick to the rolling pin. You will need a large cookie sheet. Use any filling you want. After the second sheet is over the filling, take a fork and pierce the dough. Slow oven at 325º for 1 hour. October WELCOME Please add the following new member to your membership roster.
