The city will prioritize the redevelopment of the playground area to align with the Capital Project Budget. There maybe additional opportunities for park improvements pending the priorities set by the community and the budget allocated to this project. The construction budget for 019 is $50,000. The site includes mature trees that will be evaluated by the city arborist. All healthy, viable trees will be protected and retained in the new design for the park. The design for the new play environment will aim to accommodate children of all ages and abilities as well as provide comfortable places for parents, caretakers and neighbours to spectate and socialize. WHAT WE HOPE TO LEARN We want your input! As part of the planning process, the City is committed to seeking feedback from children who use the park, area residents and stakeholders. The results of this process will lead to the development of a Preferred Conceptual Design that will be presented at the next Open House planned for Winter 019. Please take some time to review the material and answer the questions on the questionnaire. NOVEMBER 14, 018

2 WHAT WE VE HEARD PUBLIC HOUSE #1 AT CONNAUGHT HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND ONLINE SURVEY RESULTS BACKGROUND City staff facilitated a children s design workshop at the Connaught Heights Elementary School Annual Carnival on Friday, June 8th, 018. The designs were catalogued and analysed by City staff and in order to identify larger patterns in the ideas that were envisioned for the new playground. The following summary was generated from the 56 models and drawings by the students created at the Children s Design Workshop. 45% of the designs displayed play equipment or structures that CHALLENGE PHYSICAL ABILITIES such as climbing structures, such as monkey bars and trees. CHALLENGING PLAY 0% of the designs incorporated NATURAL MATERIALS such as water, sand and trees into their designs. NATURE PLAY PHYSICAL / ACTIVE PLAY 68% of the designs displayed play equipment or structures that emphasized SPEED, MOVEMENT or HEIGHT such as slides, swings, ziplines and spinners SHARE YOUR IDEAS ON THE FUTURE! PLAY FEATURES DESIGNED AT THE WORKSHOP Basketball Courts Big Trees Bridge Climber Climbing Wall Concrete Slide Forest/ Tree Climbing Fort Four Squares Fire Truck for Toddlers Group Swing Hiding Spot Hockey Rink Jump between Platforms Jungle Gym Logs Maze Monkey Bars Pool Rock Climber Rock House Rock Wall Ropes Sandbox Seesaw Skateboard Park Slide with Curves Spinning Wheel /Donut Stairs Swings Tires Trampoline Tree House Water Park Zip-line SUMMARY OF FINDINGS TOP 6 POPULAR PLAY FEATURES DESIGNED Slide Swing Monkey bars Zip-line Climber Trampoline There was a diverse mix of elementary school aged children who participated in the workshop. The majority of participants were 5-8 yrs old, however, there were a subgroup of older children ranging from the 9-11 yrs old. A large portion of the participants completed their designs with little or no help from their parent/ caregiver. Based on the descriptions of the models and drawings provided by the children, we have summarized our findings as follows: The children at Connaught Heights Elementary School are enthusiastic about sharing their ideas for the design of the new playground; Common themes included climbing and ziplining; A circuit of connected play experiences was emphasized rather than singular play experiences; A combination of both natural play elements and structured/ traditional play elements were represented. 3 WHAT WE VE HEARD STUDENTS DRAWINGS FROM CONNAUGHT HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND CHALKBOARD DRAW AND WRITE ABOUT YOUR DREAM! BACKGROUND In May 018, as part of the planning and design phase, The students in Connaught Heights School were given an opportunity to draw their ideas for the new playground in classes and on a large chalk board installed on the site. This provided an opportunity for the children to communicate their ideas to staff and share their vision with other park users. The following summary was generated from the 46 drawings created by the students. WHAT DO YOU LIKE IN THE CURRENT? Swings Slide Spinner Climber Tires Forest WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN YOUR DREAM? Tree house play structure Giant slide Big bridge Zip-line Climbing structure Spinner Monkey bars Swing Maze Play room Playground castle Wood chip SWINGS 0.4% of the participants mentioned they like SWINGS and included swings in their dream playground drawings TREE HOUSE + SLIDE 45.7% of the drawings incorporated a tree house into their designs and most of them would like to see a TREE HOUSE WITH SLIDE in the future playground NOVEMBER 14, 018

The natural shade provided by the existing trees; Trees are precious and make the park so unique. The large open space for children to run and explore The general layout The playground structures allow children to develop a variety of skills. The swings, the tires, the climber, the metal slide. The natural surroundings The central location makes the park to be the community center for Connaught Height Neighborhood. WHAT ISN T WORKING SO WELL? PLEASE IDENTIFY HOW THE PLAY AREA MAY BE IMPROVED. Play Structures: Add more climbing structures Add a small waters spray area and a sand play area Add ziplines and tree house structure Provide more play structures with challenges for older kids Replace the existing surface Lots of structures are worn down and need to be updated, such as the play shell climber Use more natural materials than plastic for the play structures Park General: Add more areas Provide more gathering space, the existing picnic tables are too spaced apart Improve the existing pathway (surface and drainage) Improve the fence east of the park Trim existing shrubs to provide betters sight lines Provide a place for elderly citizens to sit, relax and social Focus on kids aged from 5-10 to align with the school age group 11.8% 88.% very important important not at all important unsure 11.8% 88.% very important important not at all important unsure SUMMARY OF FINDINGS The feedback received indicates that the majority of kids who use the park are ages 6-1, and live within a 10 minute walk of the park. The data also suggest that they frequent the park weekly even when school is not in session. Natural features (including existing mature trees) and adventure play elements are highly valued and future play elements such as a swing set, slide, zip line, tree house and a large climbing structure should be considered. Lastly, it was suggested that the areas be improved for parents, caregivers and community events. NOVEMBER 14, 018
