Around the District Community Wildlife Project Community Wildlife Project (CWP) is a joint effort of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. and the Department of Natural Resources Non-Game Division. This project seeks to enhance native nongame animal and plant populations and their habitats, foster wildlife conservation stewardship and education in Georgia communities. Many of the Dogwood District members and friends have met the qualifications to have their yards certified as wildlife habitats. They are proudly displaying the CWP signs in their yards. Have you completed the forms to see if your yard qualifies? Participation categories include: Individual Backyard Certification Hummingbird Haven Certification Nesting Box Certification Gardening with Georgia Native Plants Certification Communal Living Backyard Certification (for apartment, condo, townhouse, or assisted living dwellers). Did you know there is a competition among the seven districts for each of the categories listed above? Each quarter* certificates will be awarded to the districts with the highest number of certifications in all categories based on percentage of membership. The winners are announced as soon as results are tabulated by DNR. *Quarters: April June; July September; October December; January March. All members and neighbors are encouraged to submit applications for all categories. Will you help Dogwood District be a winner? 5 Alpharetta Garden Club Our 2017 Christmas Party at the Bellmere Garden House was a celebration of our holiday spirit, thanks to Jo Ann Brooks and Joy Ross expert skills in bringing the party together. There are so many people to thank for all the delicious food and desserts. A special thank you to Dorothy Warren for arranging to have our party this year at the beautiful Bellmere Garden House. Our raffle this year was packed with desirable items and our two special raffles as well. The anticipation each year for handcrafted bird houses donated for the last ten years by Jo Ann Brooks husband David Brooks, is the highlight of the evening.

Sandy Springs Garden Club SANDY SPRINGS GARDEN CLUB DECKS OUT THE WILLIAMS-PAYNE HOUSE FOR THE HOLIDAYS Members of the Sandy Springs Garden Club kicked off the holiday season by decorating the exterior of the Williams- Payne House for the holidays. Members of the Club have decorated the exterior of the house for the holidays for several years now. In keeping with decorations that would have been appropriate and readily available for such a house in the late 19 th century, members gathered greenery and berries from their yards. We used our gathered materials to make garlands and wreaths for the house. Burlap was used to fashion bows. The circa 1869 farmhouse was purchased and moved to the campus of Heritage Sandy Springs in 1985 primarily through the efforts of the Sandy Springs Garden Club. Over the years the Club has installed and maintained landscaping around the house, including a memorial garden. Emily Levitt and Margaret Russell were the co-chairs of the decorating committee. Chris Adams, Minnie Bob Campbell, Ingrid Chen, Carrie Grayson, Sarah McKenney, Lib Thompson and Ginny Wolf served as Emily s and Margaret s elves on this project. Lib Thompson

SPALDING GARDEN CLUB MAKES DONATION TO DUNWOODY NATURE CENTER Spalding Garden Club recently made a financial donation to the Dunwoody Nature Center to help with the creation of the North Woods Pavilion at DNC. The plans for the center's newest 1,800 square foot facility will nicely blend in with the environment and will be a year-round multifunctional space. This new building will quickly become a focal point of programming at the DNC. This pavilion will serve as a communal place to gather, a place to learn important lessons, and will be an enclave of cultural activity. Funding from the Spalding Garden Club will be used to enhance the entry to the pavilion with landscaping and other features. Spalding Garden Club members are proud to be a part of this newest addition to the expanding Dunwoody Nature Center. Alan Mother, Director of the Dunwoody Nature Center, Nancy Cunningham, Spalding Garden Club treasurer, and Joy Vannerson, Spalding Garden Club member. Roswell Garden Club Lib Thompson, Debbie Vann Carol Martin, Rosie Davidson, Dottie Hartford, Debbie Vann Members of the Roswell Garden Club enjoyed celebrating with a Christmas Open House. Smiles all around as Christmas was just around the corner.

Spalding Garden Club SPALDING GARDEN CLUB'S CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS HOME TOUR Four homes, beautifully dressed for the holidays, were on the Spalding Garden Club's Candlelight Home Tour this past December. The homes featured were in the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs community, and all were unique in the style of the home and their display of Christmas decorations. The tour was held on a beautiful December evening and was enjoyed by 500 visitors from the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs area. During the event all members and several of their friends served as hostesses in these lovely homes, and their husbands also volunteered by helping visitors with parking and monitoring traffic flow in these neighborhoods. Spalding Garden Club is grateful to local businesses and individuals who supported the tour through sponsorships, and also to all who purchased tickets for the event. This successful fundraiser will allow the club to continue to enhance and maintain the gardens they have developed in the Dunwoody/ Sandy Springs area, and also to help beautify the community in other ways that will be determined by the club members.

Green Thumb Garden Club We had a great workday and were able to assemble 20 flower arrangements. They were delivered to the Roswell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. We placed arrangements on each of their dining room tables, the tables in the grill, reception area, nurses station and random spots through the facility. And all the patients and residents were thrilled. Sue Akins, Bobbie Wilbanks, Sharlene Hamby and Jeaneal Enterkin Deborah Hamby and Bobbie Wilbanks
