ntroduction Application Description Sequence of peration This application provides warehouse smoke exhaust and reset logic for a rooftop unit. During a fire alarm, the process described in this document controls rooftop unit to minimize the spread of smoke. Note: This application note presents only an example of a smoke control strategy. Realize that since every building is unique, the details of applying the strategy will vary. This application note, then, is offered to assist you in developing an application that will be appropriate for your project. When an automatic detector in a warehouse indicates an alarm, an alarm input triggers the Warehouse Smoke Exhaust and Reset Logic process. The process turns off the supply fan, turns on the exhaust fan, opens the modulated exhaust dampers, closes the return air dampers, closes the outside air dampers, and closes the inlet vanes. n addition, the process locks out heating and cooling and all other commands for this HVA equipment. As a result, the warehouse is purged of smoke and hot gases because the supply fan is off and the exhaust fan is on, creating a negative pressure in the warehouse. Negative pressure in the warehouse also prevents the smoke from spreading to other areas of the building. GPL Applications Warehouse Smoke Exhaust and Reset Logic for a Rooftop Unit 3

Design onsiderations Keep the following design considerations in mind when designing a warehouse smoke exhaust and reset logic system for a rooftop unit. n addition, please refer to the Smoke ontrol Technical Bulletin (LT ) in this manual. You can find important instructions and guidelines for using GPL compounds in How to Use the Metasys Smoke ontrol Library (LT ), located in the Smoke ontrol section of this manual. For information on the definition and the initial configuration of the objects and the function blocks, use GPL to examine the compound in this example. You must define system and object names for all objects. You must define the hardware location for each object. The Warehouse Smoke ontrol process has a priority of 2. A process priority of 1 is the highest, whereas a process priority of 4 is the lowest. The location for setting the process priority is in the GPL process compound s template. The process period is 00:00:00, meaning this process will not be triggered periodically. This process is designed to be triggered by Warehouse Smoke/Fire Alarm inputs and/or the Manual Reset input. f the Warehouse Smoke/Fire Alarm inputs and/or Manual Reset input are not triggerable, give the process a non-zero period, so it triggers periodically. Query the process compound to view or change the process period. A typical process period would be from 5-10 seconds. Be aware that the shorter the process period, the busier the Network ontrol Module (NM) is.! WARNNG: Setting the process period to one second ties up the NM. The NM may reboot repeatedly, or it may be unable to run other processes. This automatic smoke control application does not provide a manual override. For the details on override logic, see the Warehouse Smoke Exhaust and Reset Logic for a Rooftop Unit; ndependent Manual verride Application Note (LT ) and the Fire Fighter s Smoke ontrol Station (FSS) Application Note (LT ). GPL Applications Warehouse Smoke Exhaust and Reset Logic for a Rooftop Unit 5
Most rooftop units have a purge function used when the cooling or heating system ends its n cycle. This should not be confused with a smoke control purge process or used as such. You can simply reset from Alarm mode back to Monitor mode without running purge. An alarm occurs if command does not equal condition for any controlled device output. Each Binary utput (B) object for pressurization and exhaust outputs must be configured to have its own feedback (proof sensor) input. The B s Alarm attribute indicates when command does not equal condition. The Alarm attribute must be used in other applications, such as initiating the Local Sonalert application. When all of the fire alarms have been cleared, you must reset the process from Alarm mode back into Monitor mode. To do this, command the Manual Reset input to n. All of the objects for the rooftop unit will automatically receive a Release Priority command at Priority 2. The reset object is then automatically commanded back to ff at Priority 3. Each B object has an alarm number. n the GPL HVA Library, the controlled devices Bs are set to Alarm Number 1. Use the Report Router/Alarm Management feature to create alarm messages and link the alarm messages to alarm numbers. For example, the alarm message may read: Alarm Number 1 - Feedback does not match the command sent to the Binary utput bj. This application, as it exists in the GPL Smoke ontrol Library, complies with the UL 864 UUKL Smoke ontrol Listing. However, you are responsible for ensuring that the application complies with state and local regulations, and is approved by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Response time for individual smoke control components to achieve their desired state of operational mode, exclusive of control system response, should not exceed the following time periods: 60 seconds for fan operation at the desired state plus 90 seconds to annunciate; 75 seconds for completion of damper travel plus 90 seconds to annunciate. n the case of fan start after damper close, these times are additive. f the damper must be closed before the fan starts, the total response time could be up 135 seconds for operation, 75 seconds for damper to close plus 60 seconds for fan to start. Time to annunciate would be added to this time. (ontrol system response is the time from automatic detection of a smoke condition to the issuing of an appropriate command to the equipment.) 6 GPL Applications Warehouse Smoke Exhaust and Reset Logic for a Rooftop Unit
To maintain UL 864 UUKL Smoke ontrol Listing, you must connect a printer model number PRN-3 or PRN-4 to the Fire WS or directly to the Fire Network ontrol Module (NM). For printer installation, refer to the manual included with the printer. Also, configure the Report Router/Alarm Management feature to route your alarm messages to the printer. For specific wiring requirements, refer to Metasys Smoke ontrol Wiring Technical Bulletin (LT ). GPL Applications Warehouse Smoke Exhaust and Reset Logic for a Rooftop Unit 7

Application Details Main Function Location The main function of this application is to provide warehouse smoke exhaust and reset logic for a rooftop unit. During a fire alarm, this process controls a rooftop unit to minimize the spread of smoke. The Warehouse Smoke Exhaust and Reset Logic for a Rooftop Unit application is located under the Fire/Security/L onference of the Engineering Services Bulletin Board System (BBS). nce logged on the BBS, you can download the file to your computer. The application is also located on the Advisor.
