ntroduction Application Description When any of a building s automatic detectors indicates an alarm, this process provides the control to exhaust the smoke on the floor of the alarm, and pressurize the floor above and the floor below the alarm. Two stairwells are pressurized, and all subsequent alarms and subsequent actions are locked out. ach floor has its own outputs for exhaust and pressurization commands, these commands are issued at Priority 2. This priority level is used to bypass heavy equipment delays and override commands issued by an operator at the perator Workstation (WS). This process has a manual reset, which re-enables alarm processing after all automatic fire and smoke alarms have been cleared. The manual reset sends a release priority command (at Priority 2) to all pressurization and exhaust outputs, the stairwell pressurization fans, and the local sonalert (model number PD ). The manual reset then commands the reset object to ff at Priority 3. Note: This application note presents only an example of a smoke control strategy. Realize that since every building is unique, the details of applying the strategy will vary. This application note, then, is offered to assist you in developing an application that will be appropriate for your project. 5 Design Considerations Keep the following design considerations in mind when designing a floor above and floor below pressurization and exhaust logic smoke control system. n addition, please refer to the Smoke Control Technical Bulletin (LT ) in this manual. You can find important instructions and guidelines for using GPL compounds in How to Use the Metasys Smoke Control Library (LT ) located in the Smoke Control section of this manual. This application can be expanded for a building with more than five stories. For further details, please contact ngineering Services in Milwaukee. For information on the definition and the initial configuration of the objects and the function blocks, use GPL to examine this compound. You must define system and object names for all objects. You must define the hardware location for each object. The Fire Alarm Zone object does not have engineering units. The Alarm attribute of the Zone object indicates when a zone is in alarm. An alarm is indicated by a True or Logical 1, and a non-alarm condition is given by a False or Logical 0. ther attributes of the Zone object, such as Trouble and Disable, indicate other ff-normal conditions, but they should not be used to initiate an automatic smoke control sequence. You must assign the Remote Connection block for the Binary Data (BD) object. This is located in the Lockout of Subsequent Alarms logic group compound. To do this, first add a BD object to the work area. (f there is no BD object in the work area, no text will appear in the Remote Connection Block.) Then, select the Connection icon, place the cursor on the Remote Connection block, and double-click on the Remote Connection Block. Select the name of the BD object. A Binary nput (B) object can be used to monitor a dry contact of a fire alarm system instead of a Zone object. The B s Alarm or Value attribute may be connected to each respective floor alarm input. GPL Applications Multi-Story Building Floor Above/Floor Below Pressurization and xhaust Logic 5

A B object may be used in place of the BD object as the manual reset object. Use a B when connecting manual reset to a keyswitch or toggle switch on a firefighter s override panel. f you use a B object, you must delete the following blocks from the Lockout of Subsequent Alarms logic: - PULS (Puls) block - block (CMD Set BD) - AND block, connected to CMD Set BD block - Remote Connection block (BD bj Reset) f manual reset is not required, delete the following GPL blocks from the Lockout of Subsequent Alarms logic: - PULS (Puls) block - CMD (Set BD ) block - Remote Connection block for the BD object - AND blocks - LATCH block - CMD (Release Priority) block - RL_ALL Connection blocks - NT block Then, connect the R block directly to the ne Shot Pulse block. Modify the process so that when all alarms clear, the outputs are released at command Priority 2. Then, other features and processes may command the Binary utputs (Bs) at lower priorities for HVAC control applications. This application s process has a priority of 1. A process priority of 1 is the highest, whereas a process priority of 4 is the lowest. The process priority is located in the GPL process compound s template. This application s process has a manual reset, which re-enables alarm processing after all alarms have been cleared. To reset, command the manual reset input to n, at command Priority 3 (an Adjust command). The process period is 00:00:00, because the floor alarm inputs and the manual reset input are designed to be the only process triggers. f the floor alarm inputs and/or the manual reset input are not triggerable, modify the process period so the process triggers periodically. The process period is located in the process compound s template. A typical process period would be from 5-10 seconds. Be aware that the shorter the process period, the busier the NCM will be. 6 GPL Applications Multi-Story Building Floor Above/Floor Below Pressurization and xhaust Logic

! WARNNG: Setting the process period to one second will tie up the NCM. The NCM may reboot repeatedly, or it may be unable to run other processes. This application uses only one Release Priority command at Priority 2. The command connection is fanned out to the five exhaust and pressurization outputs, as well as to the two dedicated stairwell pressurization fan outputs. An alarm will occur if the command does not equal the condition for any pressurization or exhaust output. ach B object for pressurization and exhaust outputs must be configured to have its own feedback (proof sensor) input. The B s Alarm attribute indicates when command does not equal condition. The Alarm attribute must be used in other applications, such as initiating the Local Sonalert application. ach B object has an alarm number. n the GPL HVAC Library, the controlled devices Bs are set to Alarm Number 1. Use the Report Router/Alarm Management feature to create alarm messages, and link the alarm messages to alarm numbers. The alarm message may read: Alarm Number 1 - Feedback does not match the command sent. Do not override the BD object used for the manual reset, because you will not be able to release the override. Any override to this point would occur at Priority 1, and there is no way to send a Release command for Priority 1. This automatic smoke control application does not provide a manual override. See the Multi-Story Building Floor Above/Floor Below Pressurization and xhaust Logic ndependent Manual verride Application Note (LT ) and the Fire Fighter s Smoke Control Station (FS) Application Note (LT ) for the details about override logic. This application, as it exists in the GPL Smoke Control Library, complies with the UL 864 UUKL Smoke Control Listing. However, you are responsible for ensuring that the application complies with state and local regulations, and is approved by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). GPL Applications Multi-Story Building Floor Above/Floor Below Pressurization and xhaust Logic 7

Response time for individual smoke control components to achieve their desired state of operational mode, exclusive of control system response, should not exceed the following time periods: 60 seconds for fan operation at the desired state plus 90 seconds to annunciate; 75 seconds for completion of damper travel plus 90 seconds to annunciate. n the case of fan start after damper close, these times are additive. f the damper must be closed before the fan starts, the total response time could be up to 135 seconds for operation, 75 seconds for damper to close plus 60 seconds for fan to start. Time to annunciate would be added to this time. (Control system response is the time from automatic detection of a smoke condition to the issuing of an appropriate command to the equipment.) To maintain UL 864 UUKL Smoke Control Listing, you must connect a printer model number PRN-3 or PRN-4 to the Fire perator Workstation (Fire WS) or directly to the Fire Network Control Module (NCM). For printer installation, refer to the manual included with the printer. Also, configure the Report Router/Alarm Management feature to route your alarm messages to the printer. For specific wiring requirements, refer to Metasys Smoke Control Wiring Technical Bulletin (LT ). 8 GPL Applications Multi-Story Building Floor Above/Floor Below Pressurization and xhaust Logic

Application Details Main Function Location This application provides an example of the Metasys programming required to pressurize the floor above and floor below a smoke alarm, exhaust the floor of the smoke alarm, and activate stairwell pressurization with a manual reset. The Multi-Story Building Floor Above/Floor Below Pressurization and xhaust Logic application is located under the Fire/Security/LC Conference of the ngineering Services Bulletin Board System (BBS). nce logged on the BBS, you can download the file to your computer. The application is also located on the Advisor.
