General The Thermo Scientific 4790 consists of three components: A (non-metallic) or 1400S (stainless steel) transmitter Z ion chamber detector 3. Source head: Narrow beam (Models ), fan beam (Models , 5210), strip source (Models ) Note In this manual, the generic use of transmitter or transmitters implies the 1400A and 1400S. The specific model name will be used only when necessary. The combination of the detector and the source head is referred to as the gauge head. For transmitter to detector layout details, refer to drawing For mounting dimensions, refer to drawing Z0-01. The source head used with the detector depends on the requirements of the application. Refer to the appropriate drawing for your source. Thermo Fisher Scientific 4790 Installation Guide 3-1

Installation Licensing Licensing Warning The instrument is a nuclear device regulated by federal and / or state authorities. You are responsible for knowing and following the pertinent safety and regulatory requirements. Refer to Gamma Radiation Safety (P/N ) for a summary of these requirements. Warning Moving or removing an installed source housing or any assembly that includes a source housing requires a person who is specifically licensed to install and commission Thermo Scientific source heads. In the United States, your general license permits you to own and install all of the instrument s components, including the source head. However, you may not commission the instrument (remove the lock and open the source housing shutter for the first time) without a specific license authorizing radiation commissioning of the instrument. In Canada, you are only allowed to remove the instrument from the shipping container if your CNSC license has a condition authorizing mounting / dismounting of devices. For assistance obtaining a license or commissioning / decommissioning the instrument, contact Thermo Fisher. Source-Detector Configurations The gauge consists of one or more source heads, one or more detectors, and a transmitter. Source heads are available with either a narrow or fan-shaped beam or with a strip source configuration. Strip sources emit radiation evenly along the length of the source. For most applications, ion chamber detectors are used, and for certain very narrow span applications (level measurement range of approximately two inches), a scintillation detector may be used. Some applications may require multiple sources and / or detectors. Three possible configurations are illustrated below. Figure Installation Guide Thermo Fisher Scientific

Installation Guidelines Guidelines Warning Do not install the system in any hazardous area other than those approved. Refer to the equipment tag for the specific approvals applicable to the configuration of your instrument. Warning Do not apply power to the instrument in any hazardous area unless the safety ground is properly wired inside the instrument and the cover is properly installed. General Review the following guidelines when planning gauge installation. 1. Correct power source is available. See Power Requirements later in this chapter. 2. Operating temperature range: a. Transmitter: -40 C to 60 C (-40 F to 140 F) b. 7002Z ion chamber detector: -25 C to 60 C (-13 F to 140 F) 3. The transmitter should be mounted so that the display is easily seen and the keypad on the transmitter is easily accessible. 4. The transmitter should not be mounted near high voltage, high current, corrosive vapors, corrosive liquids, or corrosive esters. 5. There should be enough clearance to install and service the gauge head. Refer to the appropriate drawings for your type of gauge and mount (Appendix C). 6. The source housing should be positioned so that the radioactive source identification tag is visible. The source housing tag should be upright. 7. The gauge should not be mounted where process overflow or other material can collect in the beam path. The source shutter mechanism must be kept free of debris. 8. The maximum cable length between the transmitter and the last detector should not exceed 2500 feet (763 m). Thermo Fisher Scientific 4790 Installation Guide 3-3

Installation The Transmitter Power Options 1. Transmitter a. 1400A 115/230 Vac input ( Vac), 50/60 Hz, 25 VA 24 Vdc input (20 28 Vdc), 12 W 12 Vdc input (9 15), 15 W max (requires optional PCB) b. 1400S 115/230 Vac input ( Vac), 50/60 Hz, 17.2 W 24 Vdc input (20 28 Vdc), 12 W Z ion chamber detector: Powered by transmitter. The Transmitter Warning Do not install the unit in any hazardous area other than those approved. Refer to the equipment tag for the specific approvals applicable to the configuration of your instrument. Follow all instructions on the installation drawings. Mount the transmitter in one of the following two ways: - Four screws by placing one screw through each of the four holes in the transmitter enclosure s flange and tightening. - Four nuts, four bolts, and eight washers by placing one bolt through each of the four holes in the transmitter enclosure s flange, with one washer on each side. Screw on the nuts, and tighten the bolts Installation Guide Thermo Fisher Scientific

Installation The Transmitter Installing Transmitter Boards Warning Remove all power from the unit prior to opening the transmitter enclosure. Electrocution can result if power is present. The following procedure applies to all transmitter boards except for the AC power supply. Refer to Replacing the AC Power Supply later in this chapter. 1. Verify that power has been removed from the transmitter. 2. Remove the screws on the faceplate (cover) and open it. 3. If replacing a board, remove the board that is currently installed: a. Unplug any screw-in terminal connectors that have been wired from the board. b. Remove the board retaining screw in the upper card guide. c. Firmly but carefully push down on the top edge of the board to disengage the board connector from the transmitter. Pull up and out on the bottom edge of the board to remove it. 4. Align the board with the upper and lower card guide slots, and insert the board into the slots. 5. Line up the 3-pin by 16-pin male connector on the board with the corresponding connector on the back of the transmitter. 6. Firmly but carefully push on the board until the connector is fully seated. 7. Insert and tighten the board retaining screw in the upper card guide. 8. Thermo Fisher Scientific 4790 Installation Guide 3-5

Installation The Transmitter AC Power Supply Warning If a power supply fails, the input capacitor might still be charged at a high voltage (up to 400 V). Caution Do not remove the 4 screws which are used to secure the power supply to the mounting bracket. The power supply and mounting bracket are placed as a single unit. Note The old power supply assembly is not field repairable. 1. Follow the procedure in step 3 above to remove all other transmitter boards (CPU, PCB 1, PCB 2, PCB 3, and PCB 4). 2. Remove the two hold-down screws from the base of the power supply mounting bracket. These screws secure the power supply mounting bracket to the main board. 3. Disconnect cables from the power supply (AC, DC, and Protective Safety Ground). If replacing the power supply, remove the existing power supply and mounting bracket assembly. Replace it with the new supply. 4. Connect the cables to the replacement power supply (see AC Power in Chapter 4 for wiring instructions). 5. Tighten the two hold-down screws to secure the power supply to the main board. (A screw-holding screwdriver facilitates installation.) 6. Reinstall the transmitter boards Installation Guide Thermo Fisher Scientific

Installation The Detector The Detector Warning Installation must be in accordance with local and national electric codes for the area classifications. Warning The source housing handle must be in the OFF position during installation. Warning Do not reach inside the source housing at any time during installation. Warning Use proper lifting procedures during installation to avoid injury. Alignment Refer to the appropriate installation and layout dimensional drawings for the detector supplied with your gauge (for the 7002Z ion chamber detector, refer to drawing ). The source housing and detector are normally installed across the diameter of the vessel. If mechanisms internal to the process vessel would interrupt the radiation beam, you can install the housing and detector slightly off center. Refer to Figure 3 2. If the angle between the source and detector relative to the center of the vessel is going to be less than 130º, contact Thermo Fisher. Figure 3 2. It is important to mount the gauge head securely, since any movement or change in alignment can affect the gauge s calibration. When mounting the source, be sure to include a means of aiming the beam several degrees left or right so the source beam can be aligned with the detector. The exact mounting method depends on the application. Align the center of the source beam as closely as possible with the centerline of the detector housing. The source beam is narrow horizontally, and the radiation is uniform only in the primary (center) part of the beam. The radiation in the secondary part of the beam is attenuated by the shielding in the source housing. Thermo Fisher Scientific 4790 Installation Guide 3-7

Installation The Detector Figure 3 3. To determine the primary beam width, you will need the included angle of the beam, which is typically approximately 12. For each degree, the beam will be 1 unit wide for every 5 units from the source. For example, if the included angle is 12, the primary beam width will be 12 inches wide 60 inches away from the source head. At 120 inches from the source head, the beam width will be 24 inches, and so on. This is illustrated in the figure below. Figure 3 4. Determining primary beam width Measurable Range Before beginning the installation, verify that the measurable range (the range over which the process level can be measured) of the proposed installation meets the requirements of your application. The top and bottom of the measurement range depend on the source type, the detector length, and the position of the source relative to the detector s sensitive length. Sensitive length refers to the part of the detector that senses radiation. Top of Range For a fan source with an ion chamber detector, the top of the range is at the top of the sensitive length of the detector or at the center of the source housing, whichever is lower. For a strip source with an ion chamber detector, the top of the range is at the top of the sensitive length of the detector or at the top of the active length of the source, whichever is lower Installation Guide Thermo Fisher Scientific

Installation The Source Bottom of Range For a fan source, the bottom of the range is the point where a line drawn from the fan source to the detector centerline at the bottom end of the detector s sensitive length intersects the inner vessel wall nearest the detector. Tip If the vertical beam width of the source does not fully illuminate the sensitive length of the detector, the bottom of the range is the point at which the lower limit of the source beam intersects the inner vessel wall. For a strip source, the bottom of the range is at the bottom of the detector s sensitive length or at the bottom of the active length of the source, whichever is higher. The Source Normally, the detector is mounted so that the top of the detector s sensitive length is even with the top of the fan beam or even with the top of the active length of the strip source. Refer to the appropriate drawing for your source for mounting dimensions and other details. Warning In the United States, you may uncrate and mount the source housing, but you may not remove the shipping bolt unless you are licensed to commission the gauge. In Canada, you must have a license condition permitting mounting / dismounting, and without this condition, users may not remove the source from the shipping crate. Warning Use proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Fan Source Note the following if using a fan source. 1. The vertical angle of the fan source beam is typically 45. This means that the beam s vertical range is equal to the horizontal distance between the detector and the source. 2. Mount the source so that the top of the fan beam is aligned with the top of the sensitive length of the detector. 3. Install the source housing with its mounting face as close to the process vessel as practical, with no structural material (mounting tabs, brackets, etc.) between the beam area and the vessel. Thermo Fisher Scientific 4790 Installation Guide 3-9

Installation The Source 4. The mounting should ensure accurate beam alignment with the detector and provide for easy left-right angular adjustment. The top of the beam should be even with the top of the measurable range. Strip Source Note the following if using a strip source. 1. Refer to the source housing drawings to determine the position of the active length of the strip source and other mounting dimensions. 2. Secure the housing with the 1/2-inch (12 mm) bolts and lock washers (six places). The housing mounting face allows clearance for bolts or studs extending up to 2-1/4 inches (57 mm) from the mounting surface. 3. For best results, the measurable range should be less than the active length of the strip source(s). Position the strip source so that the bottom of the active length of the source is even with the minimum level to be measured. If the measurable range must be greater than the active length of the strip source, position the top of the active length of the source so that it is even with the maximum level to be measured. 4. The mounting surface should be vertical, and the mounting should ensure accurate beam alignment with the detector and provide for easy left-right angular adjustment. 5. Install the source housing with its mounting face as close to the vessel as practical, with no structural material (mounting tabs, brackets, etc.) between the beam area and the vessel Installation Guide Thermo Fisher Scientific

Installation Multiple Detectors and / or Source Heads Multiple Detectors and / or Source Heads Certain applications may require the use of multiple detectors and/or source heads to span the desired measurable range. If multiple detectors are used, mount the uppermost unit so that the top of its sensitive length is even with the top of the measurable range. Mount the remaining units so that the top of each detector s sensitive length is aligned with, or slightly overlaps, the bottom of the sensitive length of the detector mounted just above it. If more than one source head is required, install the top source housing with the top of its beam even with the top of the desired measurable range. Space the other source housings evenly along the vertical dimension of the vessel. For example, if the range of interest is 12 feet and three fan beam sources are used, space the source housings four feet apart. When mounting two or more pairs of strip sources and detectors on a small diameter tank, adjacent pairs of sources and detectors may be rotated by 90 if necessary. The source and detector for each source-detector pair at the same height must still be mounted on opposite sides of the tank (180 ). After mounting the uppermost source-detector pair, the position of the next lower pair may be rotated by 90. Thermo Fisher Scientific 4790 Installation Guide 3-11

Appendix D Adding Ferrite Clamps to 1400S Transmitter Note The ferrite clamps are only used in the ATEX version of the 1400S transmitter. They are not required for the CSA version or the plastic 1400A transmitter. If needed, the ferrite clamps kit may be ordered separately. In order for the 1400S transmitter to meet electromagnetic emission requirements for CE-EMC approvals, ferrite clamps must be installed within the transmitter enclosure on all power and signal wiring going into and out of the transmitter housing. Procedure The ferrite clamp is part of the EMC ferrite clamps kit (P/N ). The kit consists of the following: Five ferrite clamps (P/N ) At least one clamp key The procedure The clamp key is used to remove the ferrite clamp from the wire during wiring changes. Figure D 1. Ferrite clamps A ferrite clamp will need to be installed on all wiring that enters or exits the transmitter enclosure. This may be a shielded twisted pair or a bundle of individual wires. The limitation is that the wires through one clamp cannot exceed 5 mm in diameter. Also, all of the clamps MUST be installed within the enclosure. Thermo Fisher Scientific 4790 Installation Guide D-1

Adding Ferrite Clamps to 1400S Transmitter Procedure Figure D 2. Ferrite clamps installed within enclosure As shown in Figure D 2 the ferrite clamp can be placed around a shielded twisted pair cable or a bundle of individual cables, as long as the diameter of the bundle does not exceed 5 mm (a little over 3/16 ). The ferrite clamp kit (P/N ) contains five clamps. Depending on your wiring scheme, you may need additional clamps. They can be ordered using part number For example, in a Thermo Scientific DensityPRO+ system with a scintillation detector, flow input, and three outputs, there will be eight shielded twisted pair cables and one power cable. This system would require a total of nine ferrite clamps. So you would need either two kits or one kit and four additional clamps to be EMC compliant. Note All ATEX version 1400S transmitters shipped after August 2009 will contain one ferrite clamp kit and will have one ferrite clamp installed on the AC voltage input wiring. Note If the locking mechanism of the clamp should fail, a plastic wire tie can be used to secure the clamp around the wire. D Installation Guide Thermo Fisher Scientific
