3 PAGE 3 Notice To All City of Ormond Beach And Tymber Creek Utility Water Customers The City of Ormond Beach Utilities Division will temporarily modify the disinfectant used for the City s potable (drinking) water system. Beginning October 3 through October 24, 2016, disinfection of the water distribution system will be performed with application of free chlorine (a stronger disinfectant) rather than chloramines (a longerlasting disinfectant comprised of combined chlorineammonia). This temporary disinfectant conversion, in conjunction with a coordinated flushing exercise, is a common practice for enhancing the effectiveness and reliability of disinfection in water distribution systems and is recommended by the Department of Environmental Protection. The normal use of the chloramines disinfectant will resume upon completion of the conversion period. During this period, the water continues to be of the highest quality and totally safe to drink. Customers may experience a slight difference in the taste and odor of the water as a result of the alternate disinfectant used. Customers on dialysis using proportioning machines to prepare dialysate are advised to contact their physician to obtain the appropriate steps to accommodate this change in water disinfectant use. Customers having fish tanks or aquatic species are advised to contact a professional aquarist to minimize any adverse effects on these items associated with chlorine. Please call the City of Ormond Beach Public Works Department with any questions concerning the information contained in this notice at (386)
4 PAGE 4 Fire Prevention Week Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire which occurred in 1871 killing more than 250 people, leaving 100,000 homeless, destroying more than 17,400 structures and burning more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, Therefore, Fire Prevention Week is held on that week in October which has October 9. The theme for 2016 is Don t Wait Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years. This year s focus on smoke alarm replacement is a result of a recent survey conducted by the NFPA showing that only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are or how often they should replace them. NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, requires smoke alarms be replaced at least every 10 years, but since the public may not be aware of this requirement, many homes likely have smoke alarms long past their expiration dates, increasing the risk of a home fire. This is the third year the NFPA has focused Fire Prevention Week on educating the public about the need to have properly functioning smoke alarms. According to a NFPA report, twenty percent (1 out of 5) of all U.S. homes with smoke alarms, the smoke alarms aren t working. Also, three of five home fire deaths are the result of fires in properties without smoke alarms (38%) or with no working smoke alarms (21%). You can determine the age of a smoke alarm by looking for the manufacturer s date on the back or side and replace it 10 years from that date. 5 PAGE 5 Greek Cooking Class Spices Up September On Thursday evening, The Casements kitchen transformed into a Greek taverna when Chef Elaine Pitenis held My Big Fat Greek Cooking Class. From 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on September 22, food-lovers learned how to create a mouthwatering, authentic Greek dinner complete with appetizers, salad, and dessert! The evening s menu focused on classic recipes that serve as staples in Greek cuisine. To start the night on a tasty note, the class baked savory spinach and feta triangles and assembled stuffed grape leaves. For the main meal, the group crafted an entrée similar to lasagna. A baked pasta dish filled with ground beef and savory béchamel sauce, pastitsio is a crowd-pleasing favorite. To compliment the main course, the class tossed together a worldrenowned Greek salad and homemade dressing. Lastly, the class whipped up a traditional Greek custard pie or galaktoboureko. Made with a creamy custard filled into a flaky phyllo crust and coated with sweet syrup, the dessert satisfied any sugar cravings! My Big Fat Greek Cooking Class will meet again on Thursday, October 20th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Casements. If you are interested in attending a cooking class, contact Chef Pitenis at for more information. Please note that classes fill up fast, and seats are first come, first served. Country Singer Bobby Meeks Country singer Bobby Meeks performed solid gold country classics in concert at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, September 17. In addition to performing regularly at the PAC, Bobby Meeks has also performed for other City of Ormond Beach events including Art in the Park in Rockefeller Gardens. Bobby Meeks sang a wide variety of country songs from artists including George Jones, Hank Williams Sr., Elvis Presley and many others. The concert was enjoyed by his loyal fans that came to hear him sing their favorite country songs.
