1 EMERGENCY A. EVACUATION PROCEDURE i) In the event of Fire, all staff, customers, and persons in the Admin building are to vacate the building immediately after hearing the Alarm or Shouting of Fire. Assembly point for everyone in the event of Fire is FORESHORE CAR PARK ii) In the event of Tsunaimi : Everyone must move the high ground (atleast 30 feet higher) that is- Follow Mac Aurther st towards upper Hercules st iii) Ground Level: The Pay Section to evacuate using the Main Entrance while the Registry Section to evacuate using the Rear Entrance. iv) Level One - All staff members and persons inside the Administration Department are to evacuate using the Main Entrance door towards the main street side and the Mayoral Podium door located inside Director Administration & Operation Office towards the main street while All staff members of the Finance Department to evacuate using the Main Entrance door towards the Main Road and the Rear Exit located towards the Fintel building and move towards FORESHORE CAR PARK v) Level Two - All staff members and persons of the Engineering Department and Health Department to evacuate using both the Main Entrance and the Rear door towards the FINTEL building side then down the stairs and move towards FORESHORE CAR PARK. vi) Level Three All staff members and persons of the CEO s Department, Legal Section, Registry and Internal Auditors section, and persons in level 3 are to evacuate the building by using both Main Entrance and the Rear EXIT and move towards FORESHORE CAR PARK. 1

2 B. ON HEARING THE EVACUATION ALARM KEEP CALM Assist persons who may need help or visitors to the workplace, to show the wayout. DO NOT intend to assist handicapped or disable persons as it will obstruct the movement of people at the EXIT point, there are other arrangement in place for their evacuation. DO NOT take any of your belongings as it will only create additional congestion to the EXIT point. DO NOT Switch off lights. DO Switch off responsible machines. DO Walk quickly but DO NOT run. DO NOT Attend to walk pass another. DO NOT Return to the building until declared ALL CLEAR by the Chief Warden. DO NOT Wait near the Fire Stairways Doors. NOTE That during the Drill Evacuation a Warden will pass by to inform you that the exercise is only a trial evacuation. C. ASSEMBLY AREAS: 1. FIRE: As soon as you are safely out of the building DO NOT wait at the Fire Exit area but move quickly to the assembly point, that is the FORESHORE CAR PARK 2

3 2. EARTHQUAKE: KEEP CALM Remain in the room, it is safer. Take Shelter under solid furniture If ordered for evacuations then move to assembly area 3. TSUNAMI / Move atleast 30 feet high from the sea level. Move towards Hercules st through Macaruther st. Suva City Council Depot, Fulaga Street, Samabula. ( move through high road area and do not follow any coastal or low area through the CBD. D. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE WARDEN / COORDINATOR ARE; a. Ensure that all staff are clear of each Level b. Ensure that all documents are secured and safely stored away c. Check cloakrooms and other office areas. d. Turn off power switches e. Close and lock all doors leading to the office f. Ensure orderly movement to designated assembly area. g. Conduct roll call on arrival at assembly area h. Conduct head count of all personnel present and determine the whereabouts of those missing. i. Check on the condition of all personnel j. Attend to any injured staff. E. IN THE DISCOVERY OF FIRE a) Everybody should shout Fire!! Fire!! Fire!! Then break the Alarm Switch to On the Alarm. b) Attempt to Extinguish the Fire by using either Extinguisher of Hose Reel 3

4 c) If you CANNOT control the Fire, Evacuate immediately and closing the door behinds you. F. DO NOT TAKE PERSONAL RISK. 2) EARTH QUAKE KEEP CALM Remain in the room, it is safer. MOVEAWAY From windows and Equipment that could fall over. Take shelter under solid furniture. Expecting the Alarm Siren may triggered off accidentally by the Earthquake. If ordered for evacuations then move to assembly area. 3) TSUNAMI A tsunami is a wave that is generated by an earthquake. If a tsunami were to affect Suva City it is possible that the foundation of the building could be affected and further structural damage could be experienced. It is therefore essential that all staff vacate the building as soon as possible following an earthquake. The actions that are applicable for earthquakes are also applicable for tsunami. 5 Headquarters/Library: Mac Aurther Road. Towards Hercules St. 3) IF YOU HEAR THE ALARM DURING OUTSIDE WORKING HOURS. In the event of an Alarm sounding and in the absence of Floor Warden or Emergency Team, leave the building CALMLY by the nearest stairway and do not return until ALL CLEAR is given by security staff or Fire brigade in attendance 4) FIRST AID The FAST action can save a life in an emergency in the case of a HEART ATTACK or if you find a person unconscious CALL FOR HELP lay the patient down flat in his/her back on a firm surface. If a person is not breathing apply Mouth to Mouth resuscitation, check the pulse, if this has stopped, begin external cardiac compression by applying pressure with the palms of your hands to the lower half of the breast bone at a rate similar to the pulse rate, bleeding can be usually stopped by using a padded handkerchief and pressure. Do not allow rubbish to accumulate or spill over the floor. 5

6 Flammable Liquids Should be kept in air tight container. Electrical Appliance Switch it off when not in use; ensure they are regularly serviced, when they are being used do not overheating. Fire Extinguishers Ensure that they a not placed above the likely source of fire as it is meant to extinguish. Hose Reels Never use a Hose Reel on OIL or Electrical Fire or an electrically operated machine. Fire Alarms Know where they are located. Evacuation Route Know the shortest route from work area to Assembly Point. I. WHEN YOU DISCOVER A FIRE. Sound the mechanical Alarm Telephone the chief warden Telephone the Emergency telephone number.
