4 2019 CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE The Spring Flower Show 2019 represents an exciting new departure for the Cornwall Garden Society in that we are moving the show to the Royal Cornwall Showground at Wadebridge. It offers major advantages in terms of space for exhibition of entries, trade stands, access, parking and other facilities. I have every confidence that under the leadership of Andrew Leslie, Chairman of the Show Committee and Dickie Trant, the Show Director, this year will be a great success. The Competitive Classes are of course at the heart of the show; and it is to you, the exhibitors, to whom we are indebted for your participation, and the work that goes into it. I much look forward to welcoming you to Wadebridge. Sir Robert Owen Chairman Cornwall Garden Society ENTERING COMPETITIVE CLASSES You do not have to be a member of the Society to enter Read through the Schedule and decide the classes that you would like to enter. If you would like advice contact the Entries Secretary (Fay Mann ) and she will put you in touch with the relevant expert. Take a walk around your garden about a month before the Show and if you decide to exhibit, fill in the Horticultural Exhibits Entry Form in the centre of the Schedule and return it. We will confirm your entry and provide an Exhibitor s Number which will give you free entry to the Show. For Floral Art, Photography and Children s Classes please use the separate appropriate Entry Forms in the centre of the Schedule and note that they may have different deadline dates. If two or more family members would like to enter then please use separate Entry Forms. Please make sure that your Entry Form is returned on time read the Timetable and Conditions in the Schedule carefully we reach full capacity in many of the classes by the closing dates and late entries cannot be accepted due to limited space. There are no fees to enter exhibits in the Competitive Classes. DEADLINE FOR ALL HORTICULTURAL ENTRIES THURSDAY 28TH MARCH 2019 On receipt of your Entry Form you will receive an acknowledgment together with your Exhibitor s Number and Species Cards for naming your Exhibits if known. Further advice on parking and staging will be included. When you arrive to stage your exhibits there will be Stewards to help you if required. Vases, water and preparation tables will be provided for horticultural entries. 2

This letter will be their authority for staging and removing exhibits. [b] In the event of an exhibitor wishing to withdraw an entry it is particularly requested that the Entries Secretary be informed no later than Tuesday 2nd April. [c] Staging of exhibits must be carried out in accordance with the Timetable above. No exhibit should be removed before the end of the Show. [d] All reasonable care will be taken to protect exhibited material, but the Committee cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage. Exhibits are only accepted on this understanding. [e] Entry Forms must clearly show the NUMBER of the Class for which the exhibit is submitted but the judge s decision as to whether a particular exhibit qualifies for such a class must be accepted as final. [f] All competitors must vacate the site whilst the judging takes place. No one other than Judges, their Stewards and Committee members are allowed on site during the judging. [g] The Society s experts will assist exhibitors in doubt about their classification of exhibits but have the right to disqualify any not in accordance with the schedule, prior to judging. ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS FOR HORTICULTURAL CLASSES. [a] An exhibitor may stage up to two entries in any one class, provided that they are different, unless otherwise specified in the relevant section of this Schedule [b] All exhibits should be labelled with the name of the species or cultivar; where it is not known, the label should bear the words Name Unknown. Species cards will be posted with confirmation of entry letters but spares will be available from the Class Stewards at the show Incorrect naming may be corrected but will not be penalised during judging. 3

6 [c] Unless otherwise specified, all exhibits must be plants grown in the open but blooms may be cut and opened indoors. This does not apply to Sections D, E, F, G and H. [d] Exhibits must have been in the possession of the exhibitor for a period of not fewer than three months prior to the date of the Show. [e] During staging, exhibitors must not place their vase etc. on spaces allotted to others. Tables for arranging exhibits will be provided to prevent the soiling of staging and exhibitors cards. [f] The Committee reserves the right to re-name or move exhibits where necessary. Stewards will be available to give advice during the staging of exhibits. [g] All vases are provided free of charge. They should not be removed from the class in which they are placed without the consent of the Show Director. Additional Conditions for Photography, Floral Art and Junior Classes can be found in the relevant section of the Schedule NOVICE CLASSES Classes marked * are solely for exhibitors who have not previously won a first prize in the respective sections of a Cornwall Garden Society Spring Show. Novices may, of course, also enter any other classes in that section. AWARDS [a] The Judges have full discretion to give awards according to the merit of the exhibit. [b] Exhibitors may remove their award cards from the staging after 4pm on the Sunday as the Show closes. Award cards not removed will be disposed of. [c] A list of winners of awards and prizes will be posted outside the office by 12 noon Saturday morning. All Trophies and Awards will be presented at 3pm on the Sunday. All winners (or their representative) are requested to attend. OBJECTIONS Any objections raised by an exhibitor must be made in writing to the Show Director not later than 3pm on Saturday 6th April for submission to the Show Committee. Any matters not provided for in these regulations shall be referred to the Show Committee, whose decision in all cases will be final. 4

7 ADMISSION TO THE SHOW Exhibitors will be supplied with one Exhibitor s Pass to admit them at any time. Trade exhibitors will be supplied with two passes. 8 SECTION A ORNAMENTAL TREES AND SHRUBS Other than Class 1 (unless otherwise stated) cut material must not exceed 80cm in height from the top of the vase and 80cm in overall width. Exhibits not conforming will be disqualified. Exhibits in Foliage Classes must not have flowers or berries. 11 CAMELLIA CLASSIFICATION For the purposes of this Show, Camellia flowers are classified into six groups conforming to the following definitions:- SINGLE - SEMI-DOUBLE ANEMONE-FORM Not more than 9 petals, 2 or more rows of petals, Flat with one or more rows with central boss of. stamens conspicuous. of large outer petals stamens and a central convex mass of twisted petaloids & stamens. The form must accord with this schedule independently of any published description of the variety. The judges are the arbiters and their decision is final. For the purpose of this Show:- i. Salutation, Inspiration, Grand Jury, Leonard Messel and Francie L are considered to be hybrids of C. saluenensis and C. reticulata. ii. C. x williamsii includes hybrids between C. saluenensis and C. japonica, e.g. Donation and seedlings of C. x williamsii e.g. Glenn s Orbit, provided that no species other than C. saluenensis and japonica are involved in the parentage. iii. C. x heterophylla Barbara Hillier is considered to be a hybrid between C. japonica and C. reticulata. iv. C. vernalis and C. wabisuke are regarded as being of hybrid origin. v. C. japonica is considered to include C. rusticana. 9

12 SECTION D RHODODENDRONS All exhibits must be entered and staged in accordance with the way in which the plants are classified in the R.H.S. Rhododendron Handbook. A truss consists of a flower cluster on a single stem. A minimum of two leaves must be attached. 16 DAFFODIL CLASSIFICATION OTHER DAFFODIL SECTION NOTES:- Division 8 vii.tazettas of garden origin, with characteristics of N.Tazetta completely dominant, i.e. several blooms on each stem, usually 5 20, the corona cup-shaped, with the mouth no more but a little more than the diameter of the base of the corona, with typical Tazetta scent. viii.poetaz of garden origin, with the characteristics of N.Poeticus clearly evident. (N.B. These CV s as the name implies, were raised from crosses between the species, subspecies and wild forms of N.Tazetta and Poeticus). ix. The characteristics include 2 and rarely more than 4 blooms on each stem, the coronas flared with the mouth of the corona always wider than the base, with scent of the poets more noticeable than that of the Tazettas. Entries per class. x. No more than 2 entries per class are permitted, except in classes for single stems where a maximum of 5 entries may be made providing they are all different. xi. Classes 81 and 82 are for flowers with two or more blooms on each stem. xii.classes for Miniatures are species, sub-species, hybrids or cultivars such as asturiensis, bulbocodium, cyclamineus, juncifolius and watieri that are dwarf and have individual flowers of no more than 5cm in diameter when flattened. If in doubt consult the approved list of miniatures listed by The Daffodil Society: ( xiii. N.B. Daffodil = Narcissus & Narcissus = Daffodil in this schedule. SECTION F HERBACEOUS, RHIZOMATOUS AND OTHER BULBOUS PLANTS A selection of different size vases will be available. Unless otherwise stated a space of 25 cm will be allowed per vase. Unless otherwise stated staging will be on tables approximately 76cm from the floor. All measurements are approximate. All exhibits must be arranged and staged on staging days within the space provided. In all classes pre-done work should not predominate, except classes 144, 149 and 150 which may be brought ready assembled. Plant material must predominate. No artificial plant material may be used. The judge s decision is final. Staging Thursday 4th April from 9am 7pm and Friday 5th April from 9am 3pm. Judging to start at 3.30pm on Friday 5th April. You do not have to be a member of the Society to enter.
