3 CITY ROAD LOCATION Hidden Treasure T wo Tabernacle Street has a narrow Victorian warehouse style frontage on the east side of Tabernacle Street in Shoreditch. The building expands into the L-shaped plot at the centre of the city block behind. The site is within easy walking distance of London s key creative and finance districts. Innovative Shoreditch lies to the north, the design studios of Clerkenwell to the east whilst the Square Mile, one of the world s top financial districts, is immediately south. Over 3,00 media, software and communications companies make up the East London Tech Cluster, making this one of the Capital s most vibrant areas. Start-ups sit beside high profile new arrivals like Google s Campus Initiative and Cisco s new innovation centre. Nearby Finsbury Square provides outdoor amenity space and Whitecross Street market offers a plethora of street foods from around the world on Monday to Friday lunchtimes. 4 FACADE Restored Detail F ollowing a fire in March 00 the burnt out shell of the original building was all that stood on the site. Details of the surviving features of the Victorian facade to Tabernacle Street were carefully measured and catalogued by the architects Piercy & Company. The elegant period elevation was then painstakingly reconstructed in keeping with the surrounding Victorian warehouse character. Imperial brickwork with weathered pointing and stonework cills, cornices and column capitals bear on one another to create an authentic Victorian masonry frame. Openings are spanned with steel beams and infilled with traditionally detailed sash and casement windows - double glazed for thermal and acoustic comfort. At street level a huge 3m x m frameless glazed picture window to the reception space provides a contemporary touch. 5 RECEPTION & CORE Eclectic Interiors E ntering the building, visitors are welcomed into this elegant and characterful reception space. The authentic period style of the front facade is continued in the form of vintage interior features. Moulded plaster cornices, picture rails and a ceiling rose decorate the white walls and soffit. Juxtaposed with this, and hinting at the dynamic modernity of the office interior, are other more contemporary elements including a chandelier (Bec Brittain designers, New York), crisply detailed oak wall panelling and large format floor tiles. Although constrained by the narrow site, the reception has a 6m floor to ceiling height and a small first floor gallery giving it an appropriate sense of scale and grandeur. The core area contains two unisex wcs and a disabled wc on every floor. 6 OFFICE SPACE Dynamic, Open & Filled with Light A ll of Two Tabernacle Street s six office floors have their own individual character. Faceted walls. distinctive glazing and ingenious natural lighting create spaces that are a far cry from anonymous cubicle-dominated office floorplates. Each floor is flooded with natural daylight. Window cills are set low to the floor to allow views out from a seated position. On the first, second, third and fourth floors frameless rooflights increase the daylight levels. Floor to ceiling heights have been maximised by locating heating and cooling units in a contained high level services bulkhead. Splaying out from this are high specification light fittings suspended beneath exposed concrete soffits. Ground and first floors are linked with a dramatic slot atrium containing a feature stair and frameless glazed rooflight. 8 OTHER SPACES Meeting Rooms & Terraces Terrace G enerous external terraces, ideal for drinks receptions or simply a break from the office environment, are located on the second and fourth floors and accessed via fully glazed double doors. They feature industrial powder coated steel balustrades and dark ceramic floor tiling inset with discreet uplighters. At the front of the building three meeting rooms enjoy views over Tabernacle Street through large traditional sash and casement windows. Exposed brickwork, oak cladding, exposed concrete soffits and dark floor tiles make up the material palette of these areas. Terrace 3no.
