Top Ten Design Moments From Westedge 2013 Jacob Slevin Posted: 10/08/2013 5:28 pm The inaugural WestEdge Design Fair launched in Los Angeles last week, offering the West Coast its own, much-needed destination for architects, designers and collectors. One of the fair's founders, Megan Reilly, says Los Angeles was the ideal place for WestEdge, given its unique character created by all its different communities. "Los Angeles is so large and spread out," Reilly says. Each area seems to have such a unique identity, from the more glamour-infused West Hollywood and newly developed downtown, to the bohemian-chic stores in Venice and old world appeal of Pasadena. There are so many pockets, all with interesting histories and stories to tell, with so many creative types doing and making things here. I think that combo makes for a great design destination. Here are my top ten design moments from WestEdge 2013 Patina A beautiful display of rustic and select wide plank wood flooring by Patina. Erinn V. and Astele Fluid Ribbon Chairs A handsome and sophisticated, London is calling quite fabulously I adore sophisticated usage of material, one- of- a- kind coffee table and the Fluid Ribbon chairs by with London Chair by Erinn V. by Patrick Weder made of Lamberti Decor deliver against all (left) and Waterfall Chandelier by aspirations. According to the designer, Brazilian stone. Astele. it's "a new and exclusive experience to sitting because of the split in the chair... [encouraging] activity while sitting with biomechanically accurate movements; the lower back is supported and massaged simultaneously; hips are free to rotate with the split seat; movement while sitting will pump synovial fluid between the joints; the split seat will not put pressure on the perineum, prostate, coccyx or spine." Brooklyn is in the house courtesy of Andrea Claire Studio and Token with harmonically configured lighting installations. And continuing on the thread of lighting, the suspended pendants by David Trubridge absolutely took my breath away. And finally, the the Valeo Floor Lamp by Cerno Group is a magnificent, bold lamp (I'm talking "space- planning bold"). The walnut wood (which I don't do justice in the photograph above) catalyzes earthy energies. The aluminum and steel reinforces industrial modern product design. If I were authorized to award a best- of- show, this would probably be it! Onward to Kitchen & Bath, say hello to JEE- O, stainless steel and teak, freestanding showers, designed in the Netherlands. They may be used indoors and outdoors. If you're the type of person that wishes your kitchen could utilize "noble" materials, then La Cornue is just for you. The W. Project in particular celebrates the convergence of French tradition and modernity. The collection is co- designed with French architect- designer Jean- Michel Wilmotte. And last but not least, MGS dramatizes its commitment to stainless steel, eco friendly faucets for the kitchen and bath. WestEdge Design Fair Comes to the West Coast October 4, 2013 The Hollywood Reporter I look forward to seeing Westedge in its second year, October 2-5, Last night many of LA s designers and design aficionados gathered at Barker Hanger at Santa Monica Airport, to welcome a new design fair to Los Angeles, called WestEdge. Mallery Roberts Morgan joined the party along with Kim Alexandriuk,Jamie Bush, Tim Street-Porter, Annie Kelly, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Jaime Rummerfield and Ron Woodson. Here is her report. One might wonder why LA needs another design fair when the city already slevin/top- ten- design- moments- fr_b_ html#slide= hosts the highly successful Dwell on Design. The answer, says fair-attendee David John 13,750,000 of Disc Daily Interiors Page Views is, whereas Dwell on Design attracts a designsavvy audience with a hands-on approach, WestEdge caters more to the custom design trade. Although geared toward the design professional and their clients, Huffington Post Furniture and lighting at BDDW from New York WestEdge is open to the public offering exhibits by 150 brands, many making their west coast debut, featuring furniture, lighting, kitchen, bath, outdoor furnishings and other products for the home. In addition, a series of discussions, panels, and workshops on various design topics and trends will be held throughout the four-day event. Topics include The Business (and Value) of Design, Technology & Design, Elements of the Perfect Beach House, High-Luxe Real Estate and The Art of Shopping Design Online. For years, our clients and partners have encouraged us to expand with the launch of a design fair on the West Coast. Given the demand for such an event, coupled with Los Angeles reputation as a premier design hub, we felt the time was right to pursue the opportunity, says Troy Hanson, one of the co-founders. In a convenient swap, WestEdge opens just as the Los Angeles Antiques, Art & Design Show, beginning next week and traditionally held at the Barker Hangar, jumps ship to a new location in Culver City, 3 Labs Studio. Physical proof there s room in LA for another design fair! At that fair a celebrated design couple legendary architecture photographer Tim Street-Porter and designer and writer Annie Kelly will receive the 2013 Design Leadership Award from LACMA. Meanwhile, back at WestEdge, on Sunday at 4:00pm, Tim and Annie will talk to me about the American interiors they have photographed, written about and helped to turn into the iconic homes they are today.
