3 Leisure and Hospitality From boutique hotels and spas to specialist sports facilities for the Great Britain Olympic team, CPMG s experience in hotel and leisure design is extensive. In the design of hotels, our specialist interior design team has a particular part to play, liaising with those responsible for the hotel brand identity to ensure that the solution capitalises on the inherent strengths of the brand. Brands with whom we have worked on hotel concepts include: Rezidor, Park Inn and the fashion house Missoni. We have also been involved in supporting many successful funding bids for sports projects. Elite performance sports facilities we have designed include GMAC, a Gymnastics and Martial Arts Centre next to Birmingham s Alexander Stadium, and the High Performance Centre, Perry Park, Birmingham. We create hotel and leisure facilities that are vibrant, viable, visionary and sustainable contributors to the community.
4 Centre Parcs Hotel Suffolk Value: n/a A competition winning design by CPMG for Center Parcs comprising a ninety nine bedroom hotel. The existing 400 acre Center Parcs holiday resort is set in the natural woodland of Elevden Forest, with trees, streams and wildlife surrounding the accommodation; at the heart of each village is the subtropical swimming paradise, an extensive range of restaurants, cafés and retail outlets, as well as the Aqua Sana Spa. The new accommodation fits seamlessly within the resort landscape and has a minimal impact on the natural environment; the buildings are clad in timber to blend into the natural setting.
5 Intercontinental O2 Hotel London Value: 8m The Intercontinental O2 is located next to the world famous O2 Arena and is set on the Greenwich Peninsula against the backdrop of the River Thames and the historical location of the Docklands. In the trading past of the area where the hotel is located, journeys on the East India Trading route brought back from Asia tea, spices, porcelain, fabrics and stories of the high seas. The interiors of the hotel will reflect on this history. CPMG s brief is to work on the front of house areas to interpret the concept design ideas and to maintain the high quality of design concept, finish and customer experience.
6 Rushcliffe Civic and Leisure Centre Nottingham Value: 11m This project enables a leading borough council in Nottingham to co-locate its offices, civic facilities and main leisure centre onto one site, improving the efficiency and quality of public services in the area. Rushcliffe Borough Council will move into 2,000 square metres of open plan office space and new civic facilities including Council Chamber, Leader s and Members Rooms and associated meeting spaces. In addition to the council buildings, local people and staff will benefit from a new leisure facility located in the heart of the West Bridgford community. efficiency and quality of delivery of public services and to transform the leisure provision for this part of the Borough. In addition to being highly efficient, co-locating the two facilities provides Borough staff with a great leisure facility on their doorstep that includes a large gym and 6 lane 25m length pool. Energy efficiency is a key design driver, a fabric first approach has been adopted using PassivHaus principles of exposed thermal mass, super insulation combined with mixed mode ventilation. The building also has a rooftop PV array. The building has been designed to secure improvement in the

8 Lord Ashcroft Gallery, Imperial War Museum Value: London 0.8m The refurbishment of one of the principal galleries at the Imperial War Museum, which is a Grade II Listed building located in the Southwark Conservation Area. The project made the gallery ready for the installation of the Lord Ashcroft collection of Victoria and George Crosses. have been replaced. New internal finishes coordinate with the exhibition displays. The project focuses on improving the environmental performance of the gallery and thus the visitor experience. Improvements are achieved through the upgrading of the services strategy and the improvement of the air-tightness and thermal insulation of the building fabric. The South façade now has a double glazed conservatory acting as a passive solar collector and all mechanical and electrical services
9 HMS Belfast Value: London 1.2m This visitor centre for HMS Belfast greatly expands the landside facilities of this historic visitor attraction; it is located between the riverbank and the ship, sitting on an existing platform that stands on stilts in the Thames. with a rooftop bar that is proving particularly popular with office workers from the surrounding office buildings. Situated in the middle of one of London s greatest tourist and historical locations, the building enhances the connectivity between the ship and the riverbank at Queen s walk and through its retail offer, generates additional income. The building contains retail space, admissions control for the ship and a baristo style café and rooftop bar with amazing views towards Tower Bridge, the Lord Mayor s Office and the City of London. Our client, the Imperial War Museum now has an elegant single storey glass and steel pavilion
10 St James Yard Derby Value: 5m A leisure proposal in the historic Cathedral quarter of Derby linking together key retails streets using currently underused back land areas and bringing back into beneficial use the stables and sheds associated with a Listed coaching Inn. The project comprises a number of bar and restaurant units in a combination of new and refurbished buildings totalling approximately 20,000sqft.
11 GMAC Value: Birmingham 4.9m GMAC is a community-based Gymnastics and Martial Arts Centre in the shadow of Birmingham Alexander Stadium and the High Performance Centre, Perry Park, Birmingham. The centre has a gymnastic training hall with two floor areas to accommodate both traditional floor exercise and rhythmic gymnastics, a variety of fixed apparatus and tumble runs. It has a spectator capacity of up to 450 people. When not in use, the retractable seating can be pulled back to create an area for trampolining. On the upper floor there is permanent space for another 50 spectators. The gallery overlooks the gymnastics area and is accessible during daily training sessions, enabling the families of children in particular to observe the activities without disturbing the practice session. Three martial arts areas provide space for aikido, judo, karate, ju-jitsu, kendo and wrestling. When not in use for martial arts, one of the rooms is used for aerobics and other types of exercise classes, demonstrating the versatility of the facility. The centre caters for all age ranges and abilities and many of the users come from the communities of north Birmingham. However, the facility is also used by elite performers, training future Olympians. It was a a team base for the London 2012 Olympics.
12 Bilborough College Sports Centre Value: Nottingham n/a CPMG designed this sports and leisure centre as part of the Bilborough College campus redevelopment. The facilities include: a four-court badminton sports hall (heightened to allow for county standard trampolining), an aerobics studio, a fully-equipped fitness suite, two teaching spaces, reception and office space, and a small refreshment area. The sports field comprises an FA standard football pitch, football training grounds and tennis courts. Male and female changing facilities, with full disabled access, can be entered from inside the centre and directly from the sports field.
13 Nottingham Squash Club Nottingham Value: 1m Nottingham Squash Club is one of the most prestigious in the country with members who include some of the United Kingdom s leading players. Responsible for the design of an extension to provide four new squash courts, including a show court, and also the refurbishment of the existing building, which contained four new courts, changing areas and amenity facilities. The contract was successfully implemented over an eight month programme on a JCT 98 traditional form of procurement by contractors Wrights of Lincoln.
14 Leith Walk Hotel Edinburgh Value: 9m A new 175 bed hotel located on a strategically important site within the heart of Edinburgh s historic New Town, only a few minutes walk from the famous Princes Street. To be designed as a Park Inn, one of Rezidor s brands. This brand offers high levels of specification including conferencing facilities, lounge bar and a fully-equipped fitness centre with spa, saunas and steam rooms. The site is on Leith Walk, which forms part of Edinburgh s historic conservation area, the proposals are a modern architectural solution which respects the historic significance of the area without resorting to pastiche.
15 Rezidor Park Inn Hotel Glasgow Value: 9m We were commissioned to refurbish the former Pearl Assurance Building in Glasgow to create an 8m, 86-bedroom lifestyle hotel. Initially branded Rezidor, the hotel aimed to create a new kind of hotel experience. The hotel brand embraces an aspirational lifestyle. The style is distinctly Italian, balancing rustic, traditional values with contemporary Italian design and attitude. change to a 5* rated brand required a different approach to the air conditioning of the bedrooms. Following the development of detailed design proposals, and resubmission for approvals, the building has changed ownership once again and has been realised as a Park Inn. Following a change of direction and ownership of the building we retained to work with Graven Images and Studio Thun to re-design the hotel for a new brand, Missoni. The acquisition of additional space at ground floor enabled a much more ambitious approach to the design of the restaurant and bar areas whilst the
16 Springs Health Hydro Value: Ashby de la Zouch 1.75m The first purpose-designed health hydro in the UK, Springs was conceived as a design and build project from the outset with CPMG providing all the design services including interiors and landscaping. The site is in rural north west Leicestershire and the planning constraints were rigorous reflecting the scale and materials of the former farm buildings that were converted to form the health hydro. Some of the original buildings were retained as staff accommodation. The hotel provides 40 double rooms and a complete health and fitness centre including a swimming pool, saunas, dance studio, gym and treatment rooms. It also provides a clothing shop, restaurant and a series of lounge areas.
17 Hellaby Hall Hotel Value: Rotherham 4.5m Hellaby Hall is a small, late 17th century country house, Grade II * listed and occupying a dominant place in the local landscape. It had been fire-damaged before being purchased by Whiteley Geddes Developments. Proposals were made to repair and extend the hall to create a 52-bedroom luxury hotel. Close liaison was required with Rotherham Borough Council and English Heritage to ensure that the historic elements of the building were respected. Of particular interest was the main facade of ashlar with sash windows which were thought to be the earliest examples of this type of window in South Yorkshire. to the architecture of the low countries. In the public rooms and bedrooms particular attention was paid to recreating the fine joinery and plasterwork destroyed by the fire. Hellaby Hall Hotel was a design and build project with Hall & Tawse (now Mansell) as the main contractor. The 4.5m project was a turn key operation with all elements being covered by the contract from structure to cutlery and table linen. CPMG provided the full design service of architecture, interior design and landscape design. The style of the facade is also unusual - some elements relate
18 Hart s Restaurant Value: Nottingham n/a The conversion of the former accident and emergency unit of the old General Hospital into Nottingham s swishest restaurant might seem a daunting task, but CPMG s team rose to the challenge. paintings. A theatrical touch is added to the gourmet dining experience by an innovative lighting system which provides a range of different atmospheres. The interior of the restaurant was inspired by the Bauhaus abstract paintings of the client Tim Hart, who trained in the famous Weimar design school in the 1920s. CPMG s aim was to create a bright, uncluttered (but not minimalistic) stage set for the enjoyment of very good food and first class service. The interior design is characterised by planes of white walls and floating ceilings with circular columns, also white, defining the space within the restaurant.
