2 FILIPSTAD Filipstad serves as a container port in Oslo. The plan for the area consists of a park and up to 2200 dwellings. the kings castle part of Oslo university TJUVHOLMEN The Government quarter national theatre station national theatre Oslo Spektrum multi-purpose arena the Norwegian parliament Tjuvholmen used to be a shipyard and a port. It is now being developed as an extension of Aker Brygge with housing, an art museum and restaurants. Oslo cathedral Oslo city shopping center Oslo plaza hotel Oslo town-hall Oslo Bus Terminal Oslo West station Oslo central station AKER BRYGGE Aker Brygge Filipstad Akershus fortress Barcode Up until 1982 the area was an industrial area, with shipyards. Now the area is a popular place for restaurants, shopping areas, a cinema and office space. Oslo opera house Tjuvholmen NEW NATIONAL MUSEUM The government is planning a new building for the National museum, and there has been helt an international competition, won by Kleihues and Schuwerk in It is not determened if this project will be costructed. Sørenga NEW MAIN LIBRARY The construction of the new Deichmanske bibliotek will be started in OSLO OPERA HOUSE The norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, got to construct the Oslo Opera House after winning the architecture competition in The building was completet in LAMBDA In an international architecture competition in 2009, Hereros Arquitectos, won the 1.st price in constructing a new home for the paintings of Edvard Munch. After a lot of political controversy, it is still unsure if the project will be built. SØRENGA This harbour area is planned developed with square meters, whereas 90% is planned to be dwellings. The first home owners moved in in 2011, and the whole area is due to be finished by BARCODE AKERSELVA The building plan of this row of high-rice buildings was approved in March It is to be completed during the upcoming year. The buildings consists mainly of office-space and apartments. Akerselva in Oslo, is dividing the city in an east and a west part. Historically the workers would live on the east part. An Oslo divided in a rich west and a poorer east part will in many ways be the case even today. 02

3 NORDIC BUILT CHALENGE - NORWAY 1. INTRODUCTION We are encouraged by the Nordic Built Challenge to apply the new statements and principles of the incipient sustainable built environment. We have the opportunity to intervene in one of the most representative Norwegian building, part of the Oslo skyline. A chance to create a new paradigm of sustainability linked to the traditional nordic values and customs and, at the same time, to the technologic progress and the norwegian sophistication. This building will be an example to follow in terms of sustainability, which has always been part of the norwegian culture and will work as a prototype of high-quality, high-rise and renovated architecture. 2. SQUARE Nowadays, the building access is through a square, which is falling into disuse, invalidated by the infrastructure of the city. The current access is through a secondary entrance, located in the walkway level. We propose the regeneration of this access through a several urban strategies: 2.1 Revitalization of the program. Commercial, services. In this way, an activity will be generated that will repel the abandonment and disuse of that area. 2.2 The new hall will be organized in different levels, creating a continuous space that links the city, the station and the building. 2.3 We cover this new access space with the own envelope of the building in order to guarantee the optimal use conditions. 3. OFFICES Flexibility and transparency are the main ideas to restructure the office areas according to new working layouts. The proposal tries to offer a new kind of working experience thanks to the distribution of private uses in the expansion volumes. These spaces create hanging balconies between new structures in north façade. 4. RESTAURANT Restaurant takes advantage of height and vegetated roof to be located on the upper floors. Besides the breath-taking views it is possible to be seen as a reference and culinary point. Our main strategies: 1. FAÇADES 1. Substitution of the old façade envelope for a new specialized and sophisticated skin, different in every orientation. 1.1 SOUTH and WEST Pedestrian The southern part of Biskop Gunnerus street and the upper part of Schweigaards street connect outside the competition building. It is an chaotic area with heavy traffic due to the tram, the bus station in addition to other traffic. For the pedestrian this is an area where it is difficult to cross the street. Tram: Two stops connects within a few hundred meters to the competition building, Jernbanetorget and Bussterminalen Grønland. We offer a window to the Oslo fiord. South and West façades will receive the bigger amount of solar energy so we design a skin aimed to make the most of it. In the other hand we also incorporate solar protection to achieve the ideal comfort status inside the office space. The skin will include photoelectric cells scattered all over the façade surface. Oslo Bus terminal Aproxamently people use the terminal daily. 1.2 NORTH Traditional Norway Architecture exemplifies the spirit of the proposal. The new structural EFTE skin provides a triple function: it improves hygrothermal comfort, harvests rainwater to be reused by the flush fixtures supply and irrigation of the green areas and holds the expansion which creates the new entrance. 1.3 EAST Most representative building images are East and South facades. Due to the presence of elevators in East facade, the project proposes to use it as a solar collector. In addition to this, vegetated facade makes a hybrid combination between natural and artificial worlds. Nature elements lose presence as the facade goes up. Oslo Central Station It is the busiest railway station in Norway with more than travellers passing by daily. Taxicab stand The taxicab stand lies on the streetlevel and next to Biskop Gunnerus street. It is situated underneath Byporten shopping mall. Jernbanetorget Metro Station Lies underneath Biskop Gunnerus street. All six metrolines in Oslo connects to it, providing 24 departures hourly. 03

4 Stage 0: CURRENT SITUATION This is a phase to study the existing building, to plan and programme the current facade removal and the new envelope strategy. Stage 1: CONCRETE BASE EXPANSION Reinforcing existing foundations to support the concrete expansion which holds mall areas and entrances to the building. During this stage the access to the building will take place towards the Oslo central station. Stage 2: FACADE REMOVAL-NEW SKINS Existing facade will be completely removed to hold the double-skin façades. This stage will take place following floor packets as they are distributed in current office spaces, trying to maintain the correct performance of the building. Stage 3: SKIN COMPLETION The building can return into normal operating use of offices. Stage 4: ORGANIC SKIN STRUCTURE To allow final commercial phase. This structure will support the organic skin which will create a semi-conditioned Stage 5: FINAL STAGE The EFTE skin is located to conclude de building expansion BIOCLIMATIC STRATEGIES 1. DOUBLE-SKIN FAÇADE (C2C) A double-skin facade in the building assures required insulation and enhances ecological performance and air quality of the surrounding area. This envelope works as a multifunctional façade depending on the solar orientation: On north façade: a vegetated skin as well as a new EFTE in an organic envelope contributes to create a buffer as an inner space where commercial activity is held. On south and west façade a double glazing facade panels and shades made by polycarbonate panels, an intelligent buffer and glazing areas towards inner space. 2. INTELLIGENT BUFFER TO ALLOW NATURAL VENTILATION During summer conditions, the intelligent buffer remains open to cause convective air flow in the gap increasing heat transfer. During winter, the intelligent buffer will be closed which results in a dead zone in the gap thus reducing the heat transfer. In both conditions the effective U value will vary. 3. RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES Generating energy in the building: A. WIND MILLS These wind mills will contribute to reduce dependency on the electric supply. There are current experimental wind mills which will be maintain to generate energy which can be used in the building. B. PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS ON SOUTH Solar potential façade will be covered by a photovoltaic panel system, reducing building dependency of nonrenewable energy sources and contributing to the goal of getting into a nearly net zero energy building. 4. VEGETATED FAÇADE AND ROOF The single cladding vegetated façade is formed by topsoil vegetation substrate with a thickness of 15 cm, provided with a drain tubes to collect rain water and distributed to the harvesting system. 5. LOW CONSUMPTION SANITARY FIXTURES (C2C) The water conserving measures that we have implemented in the project consist of dual flush water closets, high efficiency urinals, and low consumption flow fixtures, as lavatory faucets and showers, which reduce water consumption by 28% from baseline case (defined according to EPAct 1992 standard). Apart from these measures, the project also has a rain water recovery system which provides flush fixtures supply. This system, which allows 87.5% flush fixtures potable water consumption reduction, is combined with rainwater reuse strategies to drop 55% potable water consumption. 6. HEAT RECOVERY (C2C) Heat recovery and free cooling strategies implemented by influence of the double-skin façade on the HVAC system, using the concept of exergy as a guide to reduce energy demand. 7. RAINWATER HARVESTIN SYSTEM The vegetated skin integrates rainwater pipes and drains connected to vegetated panels. We estimate that 15% of rainwater will be retained in the drainage layer of vegetated walls to be delivered progressively for plants irrigation, and 85% would be harvested for flush fixtures supply. 8. RECYCLED AND RECYCLABLE MATERIALS (C2C) Wood, steel, aluminum and glazing areas and EFTE, 100% recycled products, are combined with vegetation to enhance natural materials features. All materials in the proposal can be reused for future lives following to C2C strategies. 04
