6 Record Number VI. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Qatar Foundation Education City is an exciting and ambitious project spearheading by Sheika Mozah, the second wife of the Emir. It will be the keystone for future educational projects in the Middle East and other parts of the world. The Education City will be composed of various unique buildings designed by architects selected from around the world. At the moment most of them have yet to be built. The Master plan, designed by Arata Isosaki, is a harmonious blend of architecture and exterior spaces. The main feature is the Green Spine crossing from north to south as well as from east to west. Legorreta + Legorreta was selected to design the Texas A&M Engineering College, the Carnegie Mellon Business and Computer Science College, the School of Foreign Service as well as the Student Centre. The Texas A&M Engineering College consists of two main buildings, an Academic Quadrangle and a Research Octagon. The Academic Quadrangle houses 4 engineering faculties: Chemistry, Mechanical, Electrical & Petroleum designed around 4 courtyards and distributed in a 4 story building. Courses are taught in 10 classrooms, 3 lecture halls & academic labs. 24 wet labs and 6 computational/research labs in the building support an interdisciplinary research center. Common areas like library, with its electronic media collection; main computer labs; student lounges and prayer rooms are located in an 82 ft high central tower, which is connected by office arms with the Quadrangle. The main entrance is announced by another 82 ft high tower located on the east side of the Academic Quadrangle. Lecture Halls and Classrooms designed as figurative elements connect at the north and the south with the Academic Quadrangle. The plan of this building became the official logo of the College and this same shape was used in the design of windows and lattices. The Research building consists of 4 labs wings that are designed around a large open atrium through a 3 story distribution. Offices are located around the perimeter of this atrium to allow easy interaction. Among the technology that the building houses are the immersion applications where students and researchers are able to simulate different exercises and view their outcomes on a 9ft x 15ft curved screen housed in a room designed for optimum use of tech. Buildings are connected by a link atrium featuring a series of bridges and vertical circulation, that stimulate movement around the building and open areas were informal meeting spaces are created. A lower floor houses all technical rooms. The facades were studied to orientate the buildings and according its angles shading elements were provided so the sunlight could be avoided but at the same time locate outdoor shadowed areas that didn t need to be artificially refreshed. Some of the facades were provided of a double skin with the intention of minimize the heat trough the wall and others were added with heat mirror insulation glass, so sun s UV radiation was blocked helping reduce damage. High performance glass is used in all skylights in conjunction with external and internal louvers, to be able to have natural light inside but avoid the inefficient heat gain associated with skylights in such climates. The courtyards promote the interaction between students and faculty staff; it was intended to create harmonious and refreshing areas with the use of vegetation and water, always taking care of this important source of life so substantial for this Middle East Culture. Relax areas were designed according to Arabian traditions of resting apart men from women. The use of walls, textures, light, shadow and water allows creation of spaces that offer peace, encourage meditation, study and conversation. With a contemporary interpretation of the traditional concepts of Islamic architecture the design of the building represents the modern Qatar. VII. MATERIALS, STRUCTURE AND CONSTRUCTION DESCRIPTION OF PRINCIPAL MATERIALS: Precast concrete panels Rosa Travertine Marble from Turkey STO Cement Board Plaster Custom Cast Aluminum Lattices Aluminum profile windows and curtain walls (with thermal break) Epoxy flooring for laboratories and research area Onyx lighting fixtures Copper roof treatment External hydraulic pressed concrete pavers INDICATION OF BASIC CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY: Reinforced concrete structure. Some slabs were post-tensioned concrete. INNOVATIVE FEATURES: -VAV (Variable Air Volume) boxes are used to control the use of Air Conditioning in inhabited rooms so that in case the room is empty, the VAV box will automatically decrease AC which will in turn reduce energy consumption. -AHU (Air Handling Units) have two way motorized valve control for chilled water flow rate, reducing energy consumption. In addition, VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) controls pump up speed when the flow rate is decreased. -Heat pipes are used to pre-cool the fresh air intake using the exhaust air. 3
7 Record Number -High performance glass, "superglass", is used in all skylights in conjuction with external and internal louvers, to be able to have natural light inside, but avoid the inefficient heat gain associated with skylights in such climates (technical sheets attached).
