3 THE WET BLOCK page 05 PEOPLE S POOL IN THE BRONX Legend has it that the first hip-hop party in history took place in a small South Bronx apartment with hundreds in attendance and many more similar bottom-up, informal, DIY music events were to follow in what established a global cultural movement. Block parties, where a larger crowd could gather, became an essential aspect of social and cultural life and a generator of social relations in the Bronx. Residents would appropriate available urban space at will be that space in the form of a basketball court or a public park. We want to further this flexible conception of public space to generate connections and build a stronger community. Our proposal, in the footsteps of the late British architect Cedric Price s Fun Palace project, envisions a public pool with adjustable program and temporary activities that meet the demands of the public. At the same time, the pool becomes an environment for spending leisure time productively. However, in contrast to Price s vision, we want to encourage public participation as opposed to reducing visitors to data points. Our proposal achieves this by giving visitors, not the management, the freedom to configure and reconfigure the pool and pick and choose floating units and functions.

8 page 15 MARCHE EN BOIS COVERED MARKET HALL IN NORTH PHILLY The major force shaping the Lower North District over the last 50 years has been population loss and renewal. This planning district reached its high point in 1950 with nearly 272,000 residents. Decline followed until a slight uptick from 2000 to That increase continues today. This population loss coincided with a loss of low-skilled manufacturing jobs and, in many cases, a lack of anything to replace them. Lower population and job loss caused an increase in vacant land and buildings. Some of these empty acres have been consumed by redevelopment, mainly in the neighborhoods around Temple University s Main Campus. 69 percent of the population of the population of the Lower District is African American. However, the number of African American residents has declined by over 40 percent since 1980 while the white and Asian population has grown. There is a trend in the area to transform unused spaces into a network of neighborhood assets, including many urban agriculture pockets. Keeping this in mind, the project seeks to strengthen the Broad St - Ridge Avenue commercial corridors by integrating smaller pockets into a cohort of public or semi-public spaces that encourages pedestrian flow. The result is a strategy that converts the underutilized Cambridge St. into a pedestrian only passage during the weekends when the farmer market takes place here. It will be opened through to Broad St. increase volume of traffic and exposure while connecting the covered market hall, the community center & the urban garden along the way.

13 THE COMMUNE SAN PATRIGNANO REHABILITATION CAMPUS page 25 San Patrignano is a rehabilitation community in Italy for those suffering from drug addiction and marginalization and help them rejoin society through vocational training. The fast pace at which the community grows and the lack of a clear masterplan has negatively affected the open spaces that therefore fall short of a recognizable character: a new clear identity should infuse the entirety of the village. Selected sites are intervened with new infrastructure to serve communal living needs as well as the necessity of community amenities like a theater and an art center. The housing project is designed in conjunction with organizational and community leadersas a first step toward a reorganization of the village, envisioned as a self-sustainable campus. With 2,400 sq m and two floors, the building will host more than 200 residents divided into 18 semiindependent residential units that share entrances and facilities. The structure sits on top of a hill and is oriented to take advantage of stunning views surrounding the site, while also providing a protected communal space in the courtyard. The layout reflects the social organization of the community, striving to provide both the privacy and security that residents need, along with encouraging collective and shared social spaces.

21 UNDER THE TREE page 41 TARKWA-BREMAN SCHOOL & HOSPITAL Through a study of the available literature on the topic, we have come to realize that contemporary agricultural society and village form in Ghana, especially that of the south where Tarkwa-Breman is located, has strong roots in the traditional agricultural society. Until very recently, the official Ghanaian planning bureaucratic systems has been largely out of touch with the local and traditional forms of village typology and its inhabitants. In fact, increased density and population size aside, there has been little structural transformation. Correspondingly, this traditional village form follows a pattern that is observed throughout agricultural villages in southern Ghana. The settlement planning is based on a main street pattern. The layout of rural villages nearby is based on the precepts of axes and center, which is many many times a market square. Villages tend to be surrounded by forest on all sides and are accessible externally by a single route. This linear, but almost disconnected due to its scale, pattern is addressed by Le Corbusier in his book The Three Human Establishments, as seen in the graphics. He proposed a new organization, more suitable for the machine age, where the cooperative center is the modern tool to be inserted into peasant life. However, both Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright agree that the rural unit should not be treated as an extension of the urban/residential unit; rather, it is important to promote a new lifestyle where agricultural production is an integral and tranquil part of daily life.

23 page 45 CAMPUS PLAN & AGRICULTURAL DIVERSIFICATION The area is traditionally a cacao growing region. Cacao is a very demanding crop which exhausts the soil after a couple years. It is advisable, therefore, to introduce crop rotation & drip irrigation to replenish the nutrients in the earth.
24 page 47 HOSPITAL & SCHOOL BUILDINGS The village of Tarkwa Breman, like a lot of traditional village typologyies in Ghana develop around the idea of being outdoors together and gathering around the courtyard under the trees. Hence, the design seeks to use the courtyard as an organizing feature for different programs.
25 page 49 CONSTRUCTION & MATERIALS The rural context of the project means that one has to be very conscious about material supplies and methods of contruction. HOSPITAL, RENDERED VIEW Here, light-weight bamboo space frame & rammed earth blocks are utilized to create well ventilated spaces, suitable for local climate. GIRL S SCHOOL, RENDERED VIEW
26 page 51 Through a study of the stingray, its anatomy and movement, a design for a pavilion/ urban insertion is proposed for the Left Bank. The idea is to create a sheltering structure that also functions as a circulation device to connect the street level with the lower underutilized public grounds while generating different moments of urban views and experience. STINGRAY FLIGHT BIOMIMICRY for URBAN STRATEGY Stingray s cartilaginous skeletal structure allows for enough flexibility for oscillation and at the same time, sufficient rigidity for the motion to transmit throughout the large fins. Comprised of thin radials varied in length that propagate the oscillations, stingray fins also sometimes include interradial connections, or cross-braces nected radials in adjacent fin rays that increase stiffness in necessary areas.
