From at least the late 15th Century to the early 19th Century Swinbrook was part of the Manor held by the Fettiplace family whose magnificent monuments fill the north wall of the chancel of the Parish Church. The village is designated as a Conservation Area and the surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Swinbrook Place is typical of local vernacular building in the Tudor style and occupies a site which is likely to have had a long history of occupation. This very pretty Tudor style house sits below the church in the centre of the village, where because of its scale and architectural treatment, it evokes the character of a small Manor House with its strong architectural presence which sets it apart from the architecturally and economically more modest estate buildings in the vicinity. This distinctive property, typical of the Victorian Picturesque Tradition in its use of traditional forms of craftsmanship which was so important to the Arts and Crafts Movement, retains some period features with attractive cast-iron lattice windows with unusual pivot-hung lozenge openings, open fireplaces, exposed flagstone floors and high ceilings. The croquet lawn has two sets of pretty Cotswold stone steps leading up to the shaded lawn under the copper beech with a weeping silver birch and a raised well stocked flower bed. Throughout this garden there are many mature apple trees and shaped flower beds which are well stocked and incorporate bay, peonies, climbing roses and hostas. The vegetable beds have been left dormant and provide a large area for home grown organic vegetables.
