7 Ketelfield Ketelfield is an award winning house designed in 1974 by the renowned architects Aldington Craig and Collins; conceived as a glass pavilion floating in the landscape. Originally called Wedgwood House, it was inspired by Mies Van der Rohe Farnsworth House and was built between 1975 and 1978 and is listed Grade II. Ketelfield is an early and rare example of a bespoke, well proportioned, steel framed private house and is marked out by its broad expanses of glass wall interspersed by black painted Douglas Fir panels under a flat roof and positioned in such a way to take full advantage of the beautiful views over the Stour valley. The house is approached via a pedestrian bridge to the wide front door into the entrance hall. The accommodation is arranged on a free flowing and open plan basis; yet cleverly subdivided to give maximum adaptability and versatility in the use and occupation of the bright and the well-proportioned accommodation. The kitchen and principal reception rooms enjoy outstanding views over the unspoilt rolling countryside.

9 Gardens and Grounds The gardens and grounds at Ketelfield provide a beautifully maintained, established and private setting for this architectural gem. A raised steel framed terrace abuts the Southern elevation of Ketelfield and steps then descend to open expanses of lawn studded by a variety of mature specimen trees and interspersed by well stocked flower, shrub and herbaceous beds and borders. A traditional walled garden with its brick potting shed and lean to greenhouse gives a private and protected area of lawns threaded by gravel paths and planted with fruit trees. Along the western boundaries is a belt of light woodland with further mature screening along the eastern and northern boundaries and, to the south, the gardens are bordered by open rolling farmland with far distant views across the Stour valley.

Directions (CO7 6LD) From the A12 by East Bergholt, proceed West on the B1068 signposted to Higham and Stoke-by-Nayland. After about 1¾ miles, in the village of Higham, turn right onto Hadleigh Road and after about ¼ mile the wrought iron gates to Ketelfield will be found on the left hand side set within a brick and flint wall.
