2 Nanto Womma/Park ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT OF COMPONENTS Existing Planning / Development Plan Context No component in Nanto Womma/Park 6 is identified in the State Heritage Register. Nanto Womma/Park 6 exists within the Paddock Precinct PL3 of the City of Adelaide Development Plan (pp ). Its Environment is described as: ENVIRONMENT Planting Character and Landscape Design The existing open grassland and Australian native woodland should be reinforced with additional planting. The views from LeFevre Terrace over the Klemzig Valley towards Mount Lofty Ranges should be framed with tall growing tree species. Permanent Structures The retention of the existing buildings should be reviewed, and where possible the buildings should be replaced with structures more appropriate to the Park Lands environment. No additional buildings should be permitted. Areas of Significant Landscape Character Items of significant landscape interest include a stand of trees along LeFevre and Kingston Terraces. These trees should be retained and supplemented by additional plantings of the same species to maintain the environmental character of that part of the Precinct. No component of Nanto Womma/Park 6 has been identified on the National Trust of South Australia s Register of Significant Trees. Natural Features Responsiveness Nanto Womma/Park 6 affords a considerable panorama from the flank of LeFevre Terrace looking eastwards over Nanto Womma/Park 6 towards the Adelaide Hills escarpment. The land slopes upwards from a flat landscape around Mann and Robe Terraces in Walkerville, and rises upwards to an open pastoral grassland before reaching a plateau at the crest where Lefevre Terrace is positioned. There is one significant feature evident: The exposed sloping hillside. A major feature of the overall Nanto Womma/Park 6, the unique open grassed expanse that provides horse grazing paddocks that also affords sweeping views eastwards towards the Adelaide Hills and westwards to the rooflines of several two storey residences along Lefevre Terrace together with their ornamental trees including several Norfolk Island Pines (Araucaria heterophylla). Of some aesthetic, historic, and geographical merit. Significant Components and Places The following section summaries any cultural landscape features that possess cultural heritage value. Overall Spatial Pattens The overall Nanto Womma/Park 6 retains its original shape and form as devised by Light, and has evidence of tree planting that accord with the spatial and species intent of Brown s Report (1880) including pathway alignments. Its significance is in its contribution to the overall plan by Light and Brown s Report (1880), and accordingly is contributory. Land Use The land use has been used continuously for the agistment of sheep, cattle and horses since European settlement. There is significance evident in terms of its continuity of use and function: Agistment role of Nanto Womma/Park 6. The Park is characterised by is distinctive and continuity of use as an agistment venue historically for horses. Of some social merit. Circulation Networks Prior to Brown s Report (1880) there was a locally established pedestrian circulation system in Nanto Womma/Park 6 that enabled people movements from LeFevre and Kingston Terraces, and also outwards to Robe Terrace to service residents in Walkerville and Medindie. The Report (1880) proposed a more extensive system together with an open carriage drive. Only parts of this circulation system were adopted and implemented, and Pelzer appears to have constructed the tan track or bridle path circuit around the Park to service horse-riding activities. Both systems contribute to the significance of the overall planting activities undertaken by Pelzer. Key features include: Archer to Jerningham Pathway: a gravel linear pedestrian pathway interconnecting that appears to have existed prior to 1880 given the documentation contained in Brown s NANTO WOMMA: 647

3 Report (1880) possessing a disorganised planting setting. Of some geographical and historic merit. Fuller to Hawkers Pathway: a gravel linear pedestrian pathway interconnecting that appears to have existed prior to 1880 given the documentation contained in Brown s Report (1880) possessing a disorganised planting setting. Of some geographical and historic merit. 4.0 ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT OF COMPONENTS Tynte to The Avenue Pathway: an informal goat track linear pedestrian pathway interconnecting that appears to have existed prior to 1880 given the documentation contained in Brown s Report (1880) possessing a disorganised planting setting. Of some geographical and historic merit. Tynte to Jerningham Pathway: an formal linear pedestrian pathway interconnecting that appears to have existed prior to 1880 given the documentation contained in Brown s Report (1880) possessing a disorganised planting setting. Of some geographical and historic merit. Central Gate: located in the centre of the horse paddock, a c.1880s period wrought iron pedestrian gate in contemporary jarrah post fencing. Of some engineering merit. Boundary Demarcations Several pieces of evidence are present of past demarcation devices and fencing apart from the fundamental road boundaries, as follows: Central East Gate: located in the east centre of the horse paddock, a c.1880s period wrought iron pedestrian gate in contemporary jarrah post fencing. Of some engineering merit. Southern Gate: located in the southern flank of the horse paddock, a c.1880s period wrought iron pedestrian gate in contemporary jarrah post fencing. 12 Statement of Cultural Significance Nanto Womma/Park 6 represents an integral segment of the overall Adelaide Park Lands that possesses associative cultural significance in reflecting the spatial and planting design intent and philosophies of John Ednie Brown and August Pelzer. It hosts a functional land use agistment that has seen continuous use since settlement resulting in its colloquial cultural association as the paddock. This has not compromised the original intent but provides additional cultural and social significance to the place. 4.0 ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT OF COMPONENTS used during the 1870s-90s, in the 1920s-30s, and in the 1970s by the Corporation. Attention should be given to the feasibility of reconstructing an indigenous Adelaide plains-dominant open grassland and woodland vegetation habitat as would have been experienced in the 1830s, as conceptually documented by Darrell N Kraehenbuehl in Pre-European Vegetation of Adelaide: A Survey from the Gawler River to Hallett Cove (1996). Revise City of Adelaide Development Plan citations pertaining to PL3 to reflect the above conclusions and recommendations. Recommendations: Seek to conserve the agistment paddock fenced configuration, all period wrought iron gates, extant 1800s planted Bunya Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii) and Moreton Bay Figs (Ficus macrophylla) specimens despite there stunted and aged condition, and reinforce this with the conservation and replanting of tree species in the surrounding plantation. Seek to devise an overall Nanto Womma/Park 6 Management Plan that takes reference from the spatial design and tree planting specification proposed by Brown in his Report (1880), including tree clumps, but draws together a predominance of Australian species NANTO WOMMA: 657
