1 Bulk Handling of Paraplex and Plathall Platicizer Buying and handling platicizer in bulk i attractive becaue the reulting cot per pound i alway lower than the cot in drum quantitie. Other advantage include reduced handling labor cot and implicity in ditributing raw material throughout a plant. Certain grade of Paraplex platicizer with high vicoity preent problem that mut be recognized when etting up bulk equipment. Table I lit ome typical propertie of Halltar platicizer. The data hould be ueful a a guide to handling the lited product, epecially the more vicou grade. The dicuion of handling method hould alo apply to pecial grade of Paraplex platicizer not included in Table I that are offered for ue with platic other than polyvinyl chloride. Some member of thi particular group are upplied in organic olvent, however, and therefore require pecial handling procedure and precaution. Information on thee material i available on requet. Method of Shipment Bulk hipment are normally made in inulated ingle- or multi-compartment tainle teel tank truck with a capacity of 3, 4, gallon. All Paraplex grade and the monomeric that crytallize above -18 C and are loaded warm o they arrive in a pumpable condition. An adequate upply of team hould be available at the unloading ite for connection to the coil of the tank truck in the event of unuual delay during cold weather. It may alo be neceary to heat the exterior of the unloading hoe until flow i tarted. The maximum recommended preure for thi team ervice i 7 p..i.g. Storage Tank Paraplex and Plathall platicizer do not corrode aluminum, teel or tainle teel. Aluminum ha the diadvantage of reacting with cautic oda if a cautic olution i needed to clean the tank when changing material. Stainle teel or tainle-clad teel tank are the mot veratile and provide maximum flexibility for intallation. Steel torage tank are atifactory if certain precaution are taken. Steel tank hould be and-blated and immediately wiped down with clean rag wet with a low-vicoity platicizer that provide an oil film to protect the cleaned teel before ruting can begin. The material ued hould be compatible with the product to be tored in the tank. "Breathing" of the torage tank with change in temperature and content level may reult in condenation of atmopheric moiture. Water would caue corroion of the teel tank above the liquid level and produce haze in the platicizer and poible harmful effect on the final product. An effective afeguard againt moiture pickup i to dry the air entering the tank with activated alumina or another deiccant. The Lectrodryer Breather BR-1 with colorindicating deiccant i typical of the unit required. The deiccant can be removed periodically and reactivated in an oven. A good deiccant i Color Indicating Activated Alumina, Grade G-6, upplied by the Aluminum Company of America. Sunken or buried tank are not practical becaue of the difficulty in cleaning, inpecting and repairing them. Moreover, a poitive head cannot be provided to the uction ide of the tranfer pump without inking a pump pit beide the tank.

2 Agitation of the tored material i not conidered abolutely eential but mild agitation prevent poible tratification of the platicizer and enure uniformity of the tank content. Tank may be provided with Mixing Equipment Co. ide-entering Lightnin mixer, Serie SE. The tuffing box of thi agitator can be repacked without emptying the tank. The mixer manufacturer hould be conulted regarding proper ize and peed. Tank hould be equipped with bottom outlet to permit complete draining and hould have manhole large enough to allow entry for thorough cleaning of the interior urface. Pump In mot intance, the carrier tank truck i equipped with a gear pump to tranfer the platicizer into the cutomer' tank. For tranfer within the plant, we recommend a pump imilar to the Viking Figure 253 pump, a Type E heavy duty pump of bronze contruction with a built-in relief valve or, for better reliability, an electric preure witch. The pump hould be equipped with a V-belt drive and hould be mounted below the torage tank with a flooded uction line. The ize of the pump, the etting of the relief valve, peed and motor horepower hould be elected to fit the particular intallation. The uggetion of the pump manufacturer hould be followed in electing the pump. A trainer hould be provided in the uction line of the pump. A trainer imilar to Kieley & Mueller Inc., Type 33 with a 12-meh tainle teel baket i ueful. Becaue of the high vicoity, a trainer at leat one ize larger than the pump uction may ometime be needed. Piping The piping hould be teel and of flanged and welded contruction with enough flanged joint to permit removal of the piping for eae in cleaning the line. Stainle teel Schedule 5 or 1 pipe and fitting are an alternate intallation. The cot i greater than teel, but the aurance of clean line and the increaed flexibility may jutify the additional expene. Piping hould be 3 minimum, particularly for handling vicou material tored above 27 C. Reducing connection to a 2" pump may be done to avoid the expene of a 3" or 4" pump. All line hould be loped to facilitate draining and to prevent the accumulation of tagnant pocket of material. Heating and Inulation Becaue of the vicou or crytalline nature of everal Paraplex and Plathall platicizer at low temperature, torage tank hould be heated to keep the material fluid. Thi i particularly neceary if the tank are located outdoor. Becaue the platicizer arrive in a heated condition, it may not be neceary to add large quantitie of heat but only enough to make up for radiation lo. We do not recommend internal team coil or tank outlet heater becaue uch intallation expoe the material to unnecearily high urface temperature for long period of time. Additionally, leakage in the coil would caue contamination of the platicizer with water. We recommend the intallation of team-heated coil mounted on the outide of the tank, blocked 1" away from the tank wall o that heat tranfer i through a tagnant air pace. Similar torage tank intallation at Halltar have 8.3

3 quare feet of coil urface per 1 quare feet of tank urface when the coil are upplied with 7 p..i.g. team. The externally mounted coil for heating the tank and the tank itelf hould be inulated with a 2" layer of ix-pound denity rigid gla fabric coated with a weatherproof finih. All pipe line hould be team-traced and inulated. We recommend trace of 1/2" ize, blocked at leat 1/2" away from the pipe itelf to prevent metal-to-metal contact between the team tracing and the tranfer line to eliminate overheating the material in the line. The team-traced line hould be inulated with 2" of rigid gla fiber inulation. Drum Filling Proceor who fill drum from bulk hipment can take advantage of bulk price on the Paraplex and Plathall platicizer, even though no torage tank i available. In uch cae, tank truck can be equipped with unloading hoe and, on requet, a nozzle can be upplied to permit drum filling. The only requirement i to have a ufficient tock of empty drum on hand at the unloading ite. However, it i important to et up the drum-filling operation a efficiently a poible to avoid incurring demurrage charge by the carrier. Vicoity Temperature Curve A comparion of the vicoitie of the variou Plathall and Paraplex platicizer at different temperature can be readily obtained by referring to the curve plotted in the figure. Thi relationhip hould be ueful in determining pump and motor ize.

4 Safety and Health Conideration Toxicity, Peronal Protection and Wate Dipoal The Paraplex and Plathall platicizer have very low acute oral and dermal toxicitie, very low vapor preure and very high flah point. Therefore, no ill effect are expected under normal condition of operation and ue. Good ventilation hould be provided in work area to remove vapor. Deign for exhaut ventilation ytem are given in Indutrial Ventilation - A Manual of Recommended Practice publihed by the American Conference of Governmental Indutrial Hygienit and Fundamental Governing the Deign and Operation of Local Exhaut Sytem - Z publihed by the American National Standard Intitute. Contact with the eye may be irritating; after uch contact, the eye mut be wahed with copiou amount of water for at leat 15 min and a phyician hould be conulted for further treatment if neceary. After contact with the kin, wah thoroughly with oap and water. Induce vomiting after wallowing and call in a phyician. While handling thee product, workmen hould wear imperviou glove and plahproof goggle a afety meaure. Spill hould be diked and taken up in and, vermiculite or other inert olid aborbent and tranferred to container for ubequent dipoal a landfill. Clean the floor after pill with a hot aqueou olution (5 1 percent) of triodium phophate crytal. If thee material hould become involved in a fire, ue foam, carbon dioxide, dry chemical or water fog a the extinguihing medium. Note that foam or water fog may produce frothing or pattering with the more vicou product. Container expoed to fire hould be kept cool with water pray. Firefighter may wear a elf-contained breathing apparatu, uch a the MESA/NIOSH approved mak (Schedule 13). Material Safety Data Sheet for individual grade of Halltar platicizer are available on requet. We recommend that proceor hould obtain imilar heet and information on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) rein and other ingredient of vinyl platic and compound from their upplier.
